Johnagold's are similar but carry their 'crispness' longer.

Kinda hard to find, pretty much have to go to an orchard to get them, but hands down the best, IMO.

Honeycrisp fruit is characterized by an exceptionally crisp and juicy texture. Its flesh is cream colored and coarse. The flavor is sub-acid and ranges from mild and well-balanced to strongly aromatic, depending on the degree of maturity. It has consistently ranked as one of the highest quality apples in the University of Minnesota sensory evaluations.

Honeycrisp fruit has shown excellent storage characteristics. The outstanding flavor and texture can be maintained for at least six months in refrigerated storage without atmosphere modification.

Honeycrisp was produced from a 1960 cross of Macoun and Honeygold, as part of the University of Minnesota apple breeding program to develop winter hardy cultivars with high fruit quality. The original seedling was planted in 1962 at the University of Minnesota Horticultural Research Center, located near Excelsior in east central Minnesota. It was selected in September 1974 and evaluated as MN 1711 at locations in Excelsior, Morris and Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and at Geneva, New York.

Wow. That is a sale price? I don't understand why anybody buys their produce at a grocery store. Too much overhead.

Pinata apples are better.

A new apple variety appeared on the US market recently. Called Pinata, this new variety is a trademarked hybrid bred from some familiar parents. The Pinata apple borrows its sweetness from the golden delicious apple; inherits its fragrance and sunny yellow skin washed with stripes of red from Cox's orange pippin; and gets a note of acidity from the Russian variety Duchess of Oldenburg.

If you like honeycrisp apples, you'll like Pinatas. They're a delicious snacking apple, but beware: They're so juicy they'll drip on your clothes if you're not careful.

I like granny smith apples because they are crisp. I hate mushy red apples. Are honeycrisp apples ... crisp??

I'm impressed that an apple thread can do so well. The planet knows it's apples?

Oh yes, they are delicious and crisp. Seriously, if I hadn't had one of these apples, I'd think every poster in this thread was gay. But they are definitely worth buying and talking about, and $1.99 is a steal. Head on down to Hy-Vee!

Honeycrisp (as noted, straight out of the fridge) slices along with a slice of Dubliner cheese almost makes me forget this miserable football season.

Almost.

Living in the apple capital of the free world I concur with your assessment of honeycrisps. Do not however, discount the potential of the Golden Delicious.
