I downloaded Photoshop 7.0. I have never used photoshop before, and my god this is hard to figure out.

Did anyone else get frustrated trying to use it. I am about to the point of saying fuck it.

There's a reason that colleges offer multi-year classes that do nothing but Photoshop. It's complicated as hell, though you can usually get around if you learn the basics.

Photoshop Elements is decent if you want some of the features of the full version, but in a more user-friendly package.

Oh, and Photoshop 7 is pretty out of date. They're up to CS4 now, which is version 11.

This is not entirely accurate.

Learn the basics and you can do just about everything you'll need to do. Once you grasp the concept of layering, everything else will just come to you. What's great about PS is that there is no right or wrong way to do something, and often multiple ways of tackling a project

Hell I can't even get started on anything. I was trying to make a sig, but couldn't get the pic I had opened moved over to the sig open layout. I havn't played with it much, I usually pick up on stuff pretty quick but I have to admit this is foriegn to me. I used to hat picture it, which I know is VERY basic, but I could do some really cool stuff with it, very user friendly.

Photoshop is the god of all image manipulation. I've used it since version 3.0; currently using CS3. One of the 'Holy Three' (along with Flash and Dreamweaver) pieces of software that I simply could not do without at work.

When you import the pic, it automatically opens it in a new window. double click the layer so its not a background, then go up to selecta and choose select all. Then do CTRL+C. Switch back to your other opened project and click CTRL +V. Bham, there you go.

Thanks I will try that.

I use all the apps in CS3. After effects is the hardest I've used. You have to deal with all the crazy crap as in Photoshop combined with crazy crap from audio and video. Sigs are a good way to start off. If you want some tutorials I could post a few.

Smitty, IMHO the best way to learn (without going to classes) is deciding what you want to do with it..make sigs, create fonts, touch up photos, etc...

once you do that search the internet (yahoo/google) for PS tuts or photoshop tutorials. you can usually find detailed ones that tell you exactily how to do something that way you get more familiar with it and then as you get use to it you will be able to go off on your own without the tuts b/c you have a base of exp in working with it.

Get a tutorial specific to the version you have, or you can take a course usually at a continuing education program. If you're more of an online, self-teaching guy you might try this site:

Another thing I have done in the past is youtube video tutorials... Example needed a good way to PS fire and smoke... went to youtube.com, searched photoshop fire. First 5 vids had good tips and more of a hands on feel than reading a tutorial. I listen, pause the vid, try it. Works for me anyway... good luck.

Photoshop isn't hard it requires time to learn, similar to alot of things. I've taken classes in Flash, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Photoshop this semester and I've picked it up pretty well, even though its just once a week courses. The good thing about the products is that they are pretty universal with one another, same tools, same hotkeys etc etc.

The Classroom in a Book series is a good set of books to look into, expensive, but authorized by Adobe and easy to read. If I had to pick a favorite I'd say Dreamweaver and Flash are the most interesting, but InDesign.... blah.

Not to mention the latest versions make it alot easier forcing you to go through far less steps. Photoshop 7 might not be the easiest version to learn off of first of all, but if you downloaded it for free then I spose its what you can work with. CS4 does come out soon and luckily the JCCC bookstore is giving free upgrades to those who purchased CS3 after September 23rd, and willing to work with people who purchased it a bit earlier, so I'll be getting CS4 as soon as the college gets it.
