This thread will probably take most of the season to break 100 posts, but dammit, there aren't any good Avs boards out there, and I need someplace to rant on occasion. This Chiefs just about aren't worth watching this year, so it's the only sport I can actually care about!

So here ya go, hockey fans, a thread of our own. I know we've got at least a few Avs, Stars, and Red Wings fans on here, so feel free to bump this thread when you're in the mood to talk about something.

My wife and I made it to the opening Avs game here two weeks ago. Fun, but it costs too damn much money to go to more than a handful of games.

Hopefully the Avs will take care of the Oilers at home tonight. They scared me with the 0-3 start, but have looked pretty good since then.

If he wants to turn down $20 million and the chance to play in a beautiful city like Vancouver, that's his choice. I am certain he's waiting it out and seeing who gives him the best chance at the ring. I don't see the Canucks being a serious threat this year so I don't blame him.

Ok I guess it's time to stop the lurking and make my first post. As a KC native living in Nashville I've become a Preds fan. A nice little team with some great young blue liners in Suter & Weber.

If Ellis plays the same between the pipes as he did last year I could see an 8th or 7th playoff spot for the Preds.

Yes, I'm an Avalanche fan, and there really aren't any good boards. I remember arguing with some douche on the coloradoavalanche.com boards a couple of years ago about how Tony Granato was an awful coach (sounds familiar :hmmm: ), and the guy was so lame I starting thinking that it might actually be Granato. After a game where Peter Forsberg made a beautiful pass to some random 4th liner (it wasn't a bad line change... Granato loved to 'mix it up') that was whiffed on by someone who's probably not even in the league any longer, I was saying how Granato had no clue what he was doing.... and the guy defended him up and down. So, I left, trying not to laugh too hard.

Anyway, Sully is a Red Wings fan (along with KCWolfman, who hasn't been here in a couple of years).... CanadaKC is a Canucks fan... Otter is a Flyers fan... bunnytrdr and Big Daddy are Sharks fans... and I think listopencil is an Avalanche fan.

I'm pretty clueless on hockey these days... I haven't gotten Versus in a couple of years, so besides a couple of weeks in a hotel last summer that got the CBC feed from Ontario, I've only seen a handful of games. It sucks. Thanks, Gary Bettman.

Yeah, losing Johnson for the season really hurts the D unit.

Surpisingly enough, the power play unit is on fire, leading the league last I saw. Granted it's early, but if they can keep converting they'll win a lot more games this year.

Then, they won five in a row, continuing their offensive dominance until the last of those, when they just squeaked out a win. Finally, they've lost their last two.

As of game 7, they were the biggest scoring offense in the league, averaging 4 goals per game. The past three games I think they've averaged around 1.3.

This may not be news to anyone but Avs fans, but chances are Joe Sakic is done as a hockey player. He wasn't even sure he would come back this year, then he screwed up his back, and now this. :shake:

http://www.denverpost.com/avalanche/ci_11185647

Freak snowblower accident to sideline Sakic three months
By Adrian Dater and Terry Frei
The Denver Post

Avalanche captain Joe Sakic will be sidelined at least three months, the team said this morning, after he suffered three broken fingers and tendon damage following an accident at his home involving a snowblower.

Sakic underwent surgery with a local hand specialist Tuesday night, the team said. Sakic suffered the injury Tuesday afternoon at his home. Sakic already was on injured reserve with a herniated disc in his back before the snowblower accident.

Sakic reached inside the "auger" of the snowblower to remove snow. The machine's power was off when he tried to fix it, according to the team. According to the consumer products safety commission, snowblower injuries are common.

Avalanche vice president Jean Martineau said the accident happened to Sakic's left hand, and that severe tendon damage occurred to one finger. That same finger and two others were broken.

"Basically, it's a mistake. He's a 39-year-old adult who made a mistake," Martineau said. "He put his hand where he should not have put it. He's, in a way, lucky. He'll have a full recovery."

Martineau said he visited Sakic in an unidentified hospital this morning, and that he was "very upset with himself."

"He's very, very mad at himself. I've never seen him like that, and I've known him for 21 years," Martineau said. "He knows he made a mistake."

Avalanche coach Tony Granato said Wednesday morning at Family Sports Center: "We heard last night that he had the accident at home. The first thing you worry about is he all right. Fortunately, the surgery went well. You always worry when things like that happen, you worry about the worst things that could (happen). But he came out of it pretty good, he's going to be able to heal, that's the positive thing about it."

Granato said he hadn't yet spoken to Sakic. "I plan to real soon. Hopefully, I'll be able to get hold of him. Whenever you get hurt, you're down no matter what. I'm sure he's real down, but again, the one positive thing is that the surgery went well and he's going to do his rehabilitation as fast as he can to try and get back in three months."

The Avalanche coach said he isn't concerned that Sakic, who pondered retirement in the offseason, might have played his last NHL game. "That's just because of Joe," Granato said. "I know Joe, from the standpoint of he's going to do everything he can to get back. If there's anyone who's going to get back quickly, or in the amount of time he's supposed to, it will be Joe. So, no, I'm not worried about that."

If Sakic comes back in exactly three months, the Avalanche will have 16 games remaining. The other issue is where Colorado will be in the standings at that point, whether still in realistic contention for a playoff spot or otherwise, as Sakic faces decisions on how soon to return to the lineup — or whether to return at all.

"The one thing you realize as a coach and an athlete, there's injuries and you never really have a full, healthy lineup and that's just part of being in professional sports or probably any sport," Granato said. "How you handle those situations or how you step up to the challenge, it's an opportunity for other guys that we feel very comfortbable having in the lineup."

Granato smiled when he was asked if he owned a snowblower himself. "I have a shovel," he said. "I split the duty with the kids. It's a fun family thing with the kids. You take turns."

On the issue of whether Sakic should have paid someone else to clear snow, Granato said: "I didn't think about anything like that. Again, when accidents happen, you always wonder, 'Why did I put myself in that situation?' The most important thing, like I said, is he's fortunate the surgery went well and in a few months, he'll be back to normal."

Granato said the Avalanche won't put the captain's "C" on anyone else, and that Ian Laperriere, Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny would continue in the roles of assistant captains. "I think we have plenty of leadership in there," Granato said. "Obviously Joe is the ultimate captain in professional sports and has been our captain for a long time and in this organization, so we're not going to replace a C right now. We're going to stay with the same system."

The Avalanche said Sakic will not discuss the accident with the media until Dec. 23, after the team returns from a four-game road trip. He is expected to leave the hospital by this afternoon.

According to a 2005 Consumer Products Safety Commission study, snowblowers were the "fourth leading cause of finger amputations" at more than 1,000 per year and more than 5,000 emergency room visits. And, that from 1992-2005 there were a reported nine deaths from snowblower accidents.

He's still young, but it's time for Stastny to climb to the leadership level.

But the team management is right. Until Sakic announces his retirement, no one except him should wear the C.

Most of the first period was played in the Wings end. The Avs had all the jump and the Wings looked like their legs were made of lead. Avs defensemen were pinching down so tight that on a few occasions (PP situations) they were actually manning up in the crease. All three goals were PP goals.

I missed the second period (had to pick up my son), but from what I have gathered, Budaj held it together for most of the period against a game that was played mostly in the Avs end. Apparently there was a really bad stretch for the Avs in the second half of the period and the second period ended in a tie.

I caught the third. Detroit dominated for 2/3 of the period. (It's probably worth noting that the Avs committed two penalties in the first five minutes of the period, putting The Wings on the PP. The penalties did not overlap, so there was no 5 on 3). Over the course of the third, Budaj made a couple of saves that he had no business making. Also, the defense stiffened and interrupted a couple of chances that very easily could have been goals (including one in which Budaj was nowhere to be seen in one replay shot — he had defended a solid attack to the left, while a mad scramble made the puck go to the one guy on the right). Budaj saved the third period, but with a little help from an alert defense.

OT saw a fairly evenly matched five minutes, although I'd probably give the advantage to the Wings by a close margin.

In the shootout, Wolski made that same move he's made work so many times. They actually showed a feature of that move just before the shootout. They showed half a dozen goalies look like amateurs while Wolski fakes the backhand and pushes an easy forehand into an empty net. The goalie just isn't in the play. I assume every goalie in the NHL has studied tape on this move, and not a single one of them so far can figure out a way to defend it. You can add Conklin to the list.

The rest of the shootout was uneventful, except for Datsyk hitting a post hard trying to answer Wolski. (Of course, Budaj thanked the posts after the game, just as he blesses the posts before each game.) Svatos, Zetterberg, Heyduk and Hudler couldn't get past the goalies.

Ryan Smyth played the hardest game I've seen him play. The defense looked solid. The PP was great. Wolski is a magician. Arnison held up on the #1 line. Lappy wanted a fight in the third but couldn't get one. Salei scored his first goal of the season. McLeod wanted to fight Chelios in the first. That didn't happen either. (Too damned bad. I'm not a fan of that fossil.)

Leopold went into the boards on his back, full speed, skates first on a hit that was a penalty against the Wings. His right leg twisted, and he was attended to immediately. He didn't go to the locker room. Maybe he's back to being the old indestructible Leopold that the Avs thought they were getting rather than the fragile Leopold that they've been dealing with. That kind of collision with the boards has broken many legs and torn up many ankles and knees. I can't describe the sound of him hitting the boards.

Three stars:
3. Budaj
2. Smyth
1. Holmstrom

Have a safe trip back, sir.

St. Louis just knocked off San Jose 3-2 in a shootout.

I was at that game... first Blues game, and even though I would have rather been watching the Wings/Avalanche (and I should have taken my Blake Avalanche jersey), the Blues/Sharks was pretty entertaining. I'm not a huge fan of the shootout, but it's pretty exciting live.

It was pretty loud, especially considering the empty seats... and they yelled 'home of the BLUUUUUUUUUUES' at the end of the national anthem. It crossed my mind before it happened, but I was still surprised. I thought it was just an Arrowhead thing. :harumph:

Blues new uni's are awesome, town teans and fans suck though.
Malkin for the penz is up in points by 14 and Crosby is down in points at the same point last year. I actually ran across Crosby's first nhl fight (pussy as it may be) on youtube.

Dear God.

I'm sorry.

:D

In my lifetime I've seen the Flyers win several playoff games and complete for their sports championship trophy in the Stanley Cup finals. They fired a GM immediately after it was obvious the team would be better without him bring new talent every year in both coaching and players. They are very proactive and stay ahead of the curve.

The Chiefs are far more painful to care about than the Flyers.

The Avs are about as mediocre as you can be. They look great one game, then like crap the next. They've been missing Sakic and Stasny for a while now, which has definitely hurt. If they can hang in there until those two get healthy, they could be in decent shape by the end of the year.

They'll be in the hunt for a playoff spot for sure, and they might make it in. If they do, I'd be surprised if they make it past the first round, though.

The Sabres would have a playoff spot if the season ended today, but they're not going to make any noise if they get in. They let too many games get away. They're ok, but just ok. Right now my money would be on Montreal out of the East.

They're awful... I feel bad about it, they had that great run of like 26 years in the post-season prior to the lockout, but frankly, they have never recovered from the Chris Pronger trade (Don't feel bad, the Oilers only recovered this season...)

I watched the skills competition last night. I'd never watched before, so that was pretty cool. I thought Hejduk might take home first in the shootout competition, but just fell short. Still, cool to see our one guy do well.

I was honestly a bit underwhelmed at the breakaway competition. It all seemed a little hokey to me.

And all I gotta say is - I'm glad I'm not a goalie who has to handle a 105mph shot.

I didn't watch much of the fastest shot... it's not as exciting if you can't see the radar as they shoot it, and it's hard to see on the Slingbox. I always enjoy the young players game, because there are always a couple who are overshadowed in the regular season. It was kind of corny that Ovechkin won on his breakaway with the props, but I liked all of the creativity.

In the past, they've had goalies like Turco and Brodeur with a mic, and they were pretty funny... wish they would have had one this year, since you have to be a little crazy to be a goalie. :)

Thank you, Mr. Checketts and Mr. Davidson.

The hottest team in the NHL over the last 40 games is in the playoffs, and by all estimations, a year early. At this point, I could care less if we win a single playoff game - these kids have shown me that the St. Louis Blues have turned the corner and are right on pace to seriously contend for a Stanley Cup in the next 5 years.

This kind of rebuilding effort is EXACTLY what I want out of the Chiefs.

Bring on the Sharks. Payback's a bitch.
