The current effort to get running back Larry Johnson to conform to the rules of the team, the league, and society is being interpreted by folks in the know as evidence that Chiefs coach Herm Edwards is beginning to prevaul in a struggle with G.M. Carl Peterson regarding the proper handling of Johnson.

As we hear it, Edwards has wanted to clamp down on Johnson for weeks. Peterson, who pulled the trigger last year on a big-money extension for Johnson, resisted.

Peterson doesn’t want to look bad for making the investment in Johnson. Edwards doesn’t want to look bad in the eyes of an impressionable locker room made up of young players who were starting to wonder when/if the team was going to do anything about a guy who has been at times defiant in his refusal to comply with the team’s wishes.

With last week’s non-suspension suspension (Johnson still got paid), which will be followed by another week off with a game check, Edwards is showing that he finally is making some progress.

Still, after the season, Edwards and Peterson might end up at odds regarding whether to trade or release Johnson.

Then again, maybe they won’t. If one or both of them gets fired, there will be nothing about which to argue.

I think there's some truth to this. If Herm had his way, LJ would be flat out suspended already. But Carl wouldn't let him do that. So Herm said, fine, Carl, I'll deactivate him each week. That's my right as head coach.

It would be hilarious for LJ to spend another season here to sit on the bench and do nothing.

If either of them do get fired it very well could be the LJ situation that does it instead of the awful coaching and horrible decision making.

Edwards and winning don't belong in the same sentence. Execute him!

I think he is defiant against the mediocrity... and speaking out about how shitty the play calling is. Im not mad at LJ. He is probably saying what most of us are saying... just doing it in the locker room. Trying to create change... but maybe not the best approach... we all know, Herm is never at fault.

wow what an out for Clark.... "differences between the GM and HC cause me to let both go and the organization to move on." .....:shake:

Both need to be let go, neither has provided any direction for this team. Herm seriously is misjudging talent right and left, Carl is still Carl and this franchise will not improve if either are retained...

Peterson and Herm are both asshats but the right thing to do in a situation like this IMO is to let the HC make the decision. If there's a problem player in the lockerroom, the GM should definitely not step in and put handcuffs on the coach. There has to be discipline, you can't let the contract (or ego) dictate how you handle the player.
