Here's a drive chart. Some items of note are below, excluding penalty first downs and kneeldowns:

1st downs where a pass was called - 13 times, 10 times eventually yielded a 1st down

1st downs where a run was called - 13 times, 8 times eventually yielded a first down

1st down plays in 1st half - 8 runs, 9 passes, 13 times eventually yielded a first down

1st down plays in 2nd half - 7 runs, 5 passes, 5 times eventually yielded a first down

1st downs where runs were implemented on both 1st and 2nd down, or 1st down run produced another first down.

5 attempts in 1st half, of which all 5 were successful.
5 attempts in 2nd half, of which zero were successful.

1st half - 15 runs, 23 passes
2nd half - 14 runs, 11 passes

So what was different in the second half compared to the first half? Is this an example of Herm going into a shell and just trying to run out the clock? They ran more on first down in the second half, though it's not a huge difference. They definitely threw fewer passes overall compared to runs. What do you read from this data?

I think you should go work for the Chiefs and put your statistical perspective to good use. I don't know that Herm is a big stat guy. I do know DV was.

Why are people so surprised there were more runs in the second half? Charles was averaging like 6 yards a carry. It's not like there was no room to run and yet they kept on handing the ball off, which is a tactic we've seen before.

The run game was actually getting somewhere for a change. There's nothing wrong with using it when it works.

The offensive playcalling wasn't the problem in the second half. It was a combination of the refs screwing us and our players not executing.

The first sequence: on 3rd and 3, Bowe lets a first down pass bounce off his chest
The second sequence: We get to a 3rd and 1. Refs call a BS false start on Cox. That brings us to 3rd and 6. Thigpen throws behind Gonzalez on a first down pass, Gonzalez bobbles the ball, and a sure first down turns up a few yards short of a first down
The third sequence: Charles fumbles the ball on the first play
The fourth sequence: one of the only offensive playcalls I hated. We run a failed screen on 3rd and short
The fifth sequence: We get a 3rd and short. We get a first down and they call a BS PI call.

We got to a 3rd and 3 (or less) on every single "last third down" in the second half. On two sequences, the ref screwed us. On 3 of the 4 sequences, had a first down except either the refs screwed us or our players screwed up. The only third down playcall in the second half that upset me was the screen pass. There is nothing you can do when you call in the right plays, everyone executes, and then your players make a costly mistake. The offensive playcalling was fine.

The problem is that our defense is an embarrassment and our special teams is a joke. There is no reason why an offense that puts up 27 points against an awesome Tampa defense should lose. No reason.

If you are taking 3 downs to get a first down every series, you are going to have a lot of stalled drives. Your goal should be to make a first down in two downs or less, and then 3rd down becomes your emergency down. Our goal in the second half was to run clock, not to keep scoring.

That's Herm. Never put your foot on an opponents throat. When you get a lead try to run the clock. God I really hate Herm.:cuss:

I would agree with you if predictable gameplanning was consistently putting us in unmanageable third down situations. But we were moving the ball very effectively in the second half and quite simply, our players did not execute. If this was about an offense completely unable to move the ball, I'd understand. But nothing frustrates me more than to see a first down throw get flubbed by a receiver when nobody puts a body on him. If the playcalling gets the ball into a very makeable play beyond the chains, and the player screws it up, that's on the player. Our offensive playcalling was not the culprit today. The playcalling's job is to put your players in a position to make plays, and it did that effectively in the second half.

The culprit today was pathetic defense, special teams, and players making stupid and costly mistakes.

I figured that too, but it came across the ticker on the bottom of the screen.

I don't know why everyone is hatin' on Herm, this just proves this team is able to set new records and reach important milestones with him calling the shots.

I don't love Herm. I've been pretty clear where I stand on this. I think Herm is a good coach, but terrible at X's and O's. He needs coordinators underneath him who can handle that part. We saw that today--Herm sucks at offense, but he has a dependable coordinator he can lean on to be innovative with playcalling.

As I've said many times before, Herm is the right guy to bring this team through the rebuild. I've been pretty clear about 1000 times that I'm still not confident in his ability to be the coach to lead this team over the top in 2 years.

It just so happens that there is so much blind hatred for the man that any shred of positive comment about Herm is viewed as blindly loving the man. I'm just as critical of him as I am supportive.

if they keep playing like the last two weeks
Carl and Herm will get their last year next year
Gun and Priefer will be gone either way-bank on it
