Neither did I until about 20mins ago when I saw one work on the discovery channel.
Any one with kids should love this little project / toy.
There's 2 types of engines you can make.
one seems a bit "eaiser" although neither require an MIT degree to cunstruct.

They basically use steam as "jet propulsion" kinda sorta.
