Wal-Mart's Black Friday deals: High tech

Ad showing retailer's planned discounts focuses on consumer electronics like a Samsung 50-inch plasma HDTV, Magnavox Blu-ray player and Xbox 360.

<!--endclickprintexclude--><!-- /REAP -->NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wal-Mart is highlighting flat screen TVs, Blu-ray players, Xbox 360 consoles and home computers in its much-anticipated Black Friday deals this year, according to a copy of the retailer's circular obtained by CNNMoney.com. Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving - is one of the busiest shopping days for the nation's retailers.

Black Friday is of particular interest this year because the country is experiencing a sharp slowdown in consumer spending. Wal-Mart (WMT (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=WMT&source=story_quote_link), Fortune 500 (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2008/snapshots/2255.html?source=story_f500_link)) is not expected to officially unveil its Black Friday deals until Nov. 24. But as more Americans cut their holiday gift budgets this year, many will likely turn to discounters such as Wal-Mart in search of bargains.
According to the circular, Wal-Mart's so-called doorbuster deals offered between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET will include a 50-inch Samsung plasma HDTV ($798), Magnavox Blu-ray player ($128), Xbox 360 ($199) sold with free Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock game and wireless guitar, HP Pavilion desktop computer ($398) and a UniFlame gas grill ($175).

In addition, Wal-Mart's Black Friday ad shows a GE microwave for $25, children's clothing priced between $4 and $8 and a variety of toys, including a Hannah Montana doll for $10 or less. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien declined to address the leaks from the Black Friday sales circular, saying only that "we plan to share the facts directly with customers on Monday, Nov. 24th." Still, the retailer in recent days has made no secret of its intention to aggressively court this year's budget-conscious holiday shoppers. Last week, the retailer said it would offer more discounts on thousands of products over the next seven weeks. Judging from other leaked Black Friday ads, additional retailers are also readying huge discounts in a bid to tempt reluctant shoppers.

Sears' leaked Black Friday circular, which appeared last month on Gottadeal.com, a Web site that markets itself as one of many "official" Black Friday deals sites, showed the retailer would offer deals on washer-dryers, a category that Sears' hasn't heavily promoted in the past. One of Sears' standout deals for Black Friday is a Kenmore high efficiency front-load washer-dryer set for $599.99. That's as much as 50% off the price of the individual washer and dryer. "This really is an incredible deal, and it indicates how nervous retailers are about the season," said Britt Beemer, retail analyst and chairman of America's Research Group.

On google you can find 50-inch Samsungs for $890-$2400. So it seems to be a pretty good deal.

I saw this earlier today. I'd think that it would have to be a 720p or even i. I'm not sure, but if it were in fact a 1080p. I will surely be waiting outdoors for quite some time.

I have the Samsung 720p. The HD picture is great. The sound isn't always good, but I think I have the best high-def TV for that price range.

Bought two of 'em from NBF in September. Interest free for 3 years. $999.00 at the time of purchase. Sound could be better, but I'll get the home theater taken care of for Christmas.

Plasma's are as of now anyway, king. They have the best contrast ratio's and burn in is "fixed". Everyone wonders though, how long they will last. What is their lifespan, and how long before their "obsolete". OLED's are around the corner but not cost effective yet.

I'll probably pass on this deal, I'm sure it'll only be 720p or 1080i. If I'm going to spend a thousand dollars on a t.v., I'm gettin' the Rolls Royce. 1080p w/ 120hz.

I will wait 'til the spring though. HD t.v.'s are supposed to drop in price upwards of 25%.

I have a 42" Plasma 1080p Vizio that I'm positively in love with. I looked at every TV in the joint and liked the Vizio picture the best. I've had no less than 4 people tell me I was nuts.

If it a typical Wal-Mart Black Friday sale, they will have five of them in the store and you'll have to be standing in line at midnight to even have a shot.

I would rather pay more and get one elsewhere.

where?

A place in the Seattle area called Stupid Prices. They mostly sell display items, and refurbs. I got really lucky with 1 of 2 that they had when I walked in the door.

I've got a Samsung 42" plasma HDTV 1080i. Insanely vibrant picture but the burn in risk scares the hell out of me. I've seen some burn in from logos on the corner of the screen but it has an option where the screen goes from solid black, through the grayscale to solid white and it usually gets rid of it in half an hour or so.

I bought a 50' inch maxent last spring for 889 and they even delivered it right to my door. I don't know why everyone cares so much about 1080p...not like anybody will be broadcasting in it anytime soon

If you have a next gen console or a blu-ray player, you probably care about the 1080p.

Dish Network has some PPV movies in 1080p. I was stunned at the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

What do you guys think about the refurbished HDTVs? Is there a significant risk to buying one or are they most likely to perform like a new one?

I wonder what the cost is on 1080p screens, LCD and plasma? Probably about $200.

I hate Big TV.
