Been thinking of taking a road trip, do some day hiking and scenic driving type stuff. Came across the Big Horn mountains while doing some research. Anyone ever been? What did you do? How long did you do it? How did you get there? Where did you stay?

Anyone? :D

It's a great area. I did some fly fishing over some water in the area this Summer. The place to go in the area now is Burgess Junction.

There is great snowmobiling in the area and the snow is slow to leave in the spring. Make damn sure you have some good snow tires and chains if you go up there though and check road conditions. It's big country and a person can get into a lot of trouble fast this time of year. I was in a whiteout driving through there last spring and it was a bitch. Be smart and you will have a great time.

I'd rather frolic in the Big Horn Mountains than taste salty brazil nuts.

You will have about a very good chance of having it snow up there in May and there will still be a ton of it left on top. Like I said, just be ready and you will have a blast.

Big Horn mountains are awesome. Camp there every other summer. You can find Moose up there at any time but mostly in the morning and evenings. I used to stay in Dayton Wyoming and then drive through to Cody and Yellowstone. Until I happen to stay in the Bighorns I didnt know the wildlife I would see up there. It also gets very cold in the evenings

That's an excellent suggestion. :thumb:

We've done a lot in the Tensleep area as well. Just took a bike ride out there in 2007. Many opportunities to fly fish and hike up there. We found a place called Meadow Lark Lake (http://www.thebighorn.com/) that you might find interesting. We were out there in July and saw what we thought was snow, but it turned out to be hail left over from a storm earlier in the day.

There's also a place called Pines Lodge (http://www.ultimatewyoming.com/businessdirectory/buspages/sec3/pineslodge.html) just west of Buffalo that looked pretty secluded as well. Not sure how much you want to rough it, but it's worth a look.

We'll be back up there in late May/early June as well. :)

Well, for the most part we are talking scenic driving and stuff. But for a solid day I want to backpack in the wilderness, and if it is nice enough out I will sleep under the stars..if not..I'll hoof it back or to where I can get a shuttle. But I want that kind of flexibility.
