Looking for some good martial arts places in the Lees Summit area for my kids. Prefer something like Wing Chun or JuJitsu.

Any suggestions?

Actually, yes. In the interest of full disclosure, this guy is an ad client of ours but he's incredibly popular in the community. The parents couldn't be happier with their results because he's focused not just on the martial arts but also the kids behavior and leadership. I've heard dozens of residents rant and rave positively when his name comes up.

I don't know anything other than his reputation with the kids, sorry.

I've been doing Chinese Kempo, Kajukenpo, Modern Arnis (phillipino stick fighting) and knife combat for the last few months. It's fun and invigorating, and practical at the same time. I don't know if i'd recommend those styles for children, though.

I'll vouch for the guy too. No direct experience with him but heard good things/comments from others.

I found a place in Independence that teaches Jeet Kune Do. I am going to give them a call and get more info.

Handguns are clumsy and inaccurate unless the wielder really knows how to use them.

It's better to have a gun than not have one. There's no argument there.

Especially at close range.

I got dragged to some form of martial art class with a friend that wanted to be a cop. I have to say it was much different than I imagined. I thought I would be learning how to kick ass as opposed to aerobics in place and when I subtly brought this up to Master Splinter you would thought I slept with his wife. Apparently I did not have respect for the art.

Agreed, per the Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark argument.

Why not at close range? I have shot a glock before and I had better aim at 5 yards than I did at 20.

You can have a gun taken away from you if you don't know what you're doing is the point I think.

It's actually easier to control the arm the gun is held in than take it away.

Most will tell you that martial arts is not really about kicking ass at all. One of the first things you will learn is that you will be expected to avoid "kicking ass" and other such confrontations as much as possible. Without going into it too much, it's about the development of mind, body, and spirit, and being able to improve each 3 areas with one physical activity. Martial arts should be considered a way of life, and certainly not a "weapon". Or so Master Splinter would say......

If you went in with the purpose of learning to kick your neighbor's ass cause he beat you in flag football, you would likely be asked to leave....

If you want to learn to FIGHT, take up boxing. The martial arts are about a lot more than that.

Boxing is certainly more devastating than any martial art, except maybe muay thai kickboxing. Both just use pure power, which the average joe does not have.
