It's a great piece. So great that I didnt want to cut and paste it. They deserve the traffic. SNR actually found this... he lost his CP password and tweeted it to me, so credit him for finding this gold.

For being a Colts fan that is way more well thought out than 99% of what Chiefs fans would say about it.

As someone that lived in Indianapolis for several of the lean years before they got good (and would never take any crap from supposed "true fans" that said they loved the colts when they were awful but went to bed in their 49ers and Cowboys jammies...), I wholeheartedly agree with everything that was in that article. I can only hope that Clark cleans house and implements a plan like this one.

If Clark hired Ross I could just imagine the reaction because he isn't well known. Then the Cowher Marty crowd would start flipping out.

I crave that flip-out. The stronger the flip-out from the 9-7'ers, the better the hire.

The guy laid out a nice formula. If we were gonna go buy his formula where would we be? mmmmmm........uh..What kind of team do we wanna be?! So what kind? Smash Mouth, West Coast, Sid Guilman or The Spread type(you name it) of offense? 4-3, 3-4, 4-3 Cover 2 or the type (you name it) of offense.

If we go off styles used around the league then considering the players we already have invested in I'd go with a Giants type of 4-3. We need some DEs for that. On offense I want what I learned from DV and that's be a running team but be balanced and use the pass to set up the run. Score points early get a lead passing and then increase the running plays as the game goes on. Still keep trying to put points on the board though. Doesn't have to be Air Coryell.

I don't wan't much.

I liked all of it but this part:For offense, since the model on D is the 4-3 blitz, the model on offense could also follow the Giants: 2 TE base rushing and passing team.I'd prefer to be just as aggressive on offense as on defense, personally.

That was a great read...although the only thing I think people would freak out about is (at least this is what it sounded like anyway) doing away with player interviews. Does that mean no more locker room report, no more comments from players at all? No more press conferences with the QB?

...it would take some getting used to. Seems like the Chiefs players are very front and center. If that's what this guy was getting at, I'd bet that would be a part of the plan not followed.

Other than that, this plan kinda gave me a woody...

This was a great read. I think he nails the type of GM and HC this team needs. That said, I found his offensive plans weak. I agree we need to be a running team, but we need an aggressive approach on that side of the ball as well.

no doubt

there isn't a "journalist" in KC who knows enough about football to even attempt such an article....

Discussing how to build the team is interesting. As a coach, I think about that a lot (albeit at a MUCH lower level)

Defensively: I like the 3-4. I have 3 main reasons.
1) The offensive lines aren't accustomed to the blocking angles. I was reading an article in Sporting News, and they were discussing that even the Steelers have had problems going against 3-4 teams this year, as it has confused their line. 2) You can attack from many angles, and the defense is much more flexible to situation than a standard 4-3. 3) You get better athletes rushing the passer.
I know the problem is that we may be "wasting" some of our previously drafted talent, but if we use that as an excuse, you can never make changes anywhere. "Want a quicker offense? You are going to waste Bowe."
Offensively: I don't particularly care about the system we run. The only thing that matters is a creative mind to keep defenses off balance. You can't play Martyball (Hermball) in today's NFL. You can't do the Lombardi thing and tell the other team what you are going to run, and just do it better than them (as much). You have to be a bit more strategic...I honestly believe that.

I thought it was a great article but there were a couple of head scratchers, such as leaving Pittsburgh off of the "good drafters" list and including the Seahawks. Seattle's drafts have been okay but nothing to write home about.

That was my only complaint...

Seattle and Philly?

Pretty average drafts, at best.

Leaving Baltimore off the list?

Insanity.

Still if you take that GM combo and coaching staff he suggested, Dear god we would be happier than a pig in poop!

We would actually have a coaching staff that knows how to win in the NFL, not this "Play so I can blame" approach Herm is taking...

Neat article. I agree that Pitt absolutely have to be on there.....and not Seattle. Lofa Tatupu and who?

I don't know enough about the candidates he debated to decide if they'd be good hires or not. But his logical reasoning is excellent. I hope we go his direction, and not the re-tread way (Casserly, Wolf, Marty etc.).

By the way, was that the Jimmy Raye he was talking about???

It's former OC/pariah, current Jets RB coach, Jimmy Raye's SON [Jimmy Raye III], who was an assistant here back in 1995.

Interesting that this guy thought his Chargers connect would be the sticking point.

Good article, but I had to clutch at my chest when he suggested Jimmy Raye as a possible GM. Guess that fresh set of eyes philosophy will have to take him off our list. I can't really blame the guy that he didn't do enough homework on Raye to know he was the most inept OC in Chiefs history.
