CONRATULATIONS MANILA-CHIEF and everyone who participated. KEEP IT GOING!!!!

I'm a strong believer in the power of the internet as a social system, and I'm putting it to the test right here.

I'm sponsoring a weight loss contest, to be held from January 1st to June 30th.

GRAND PRIZE: The person who loses the highest percentage of their body weight will win one round trip ticket on SouthWest airlines to Kansas City for a game in the 2009 season. I will also give you $100 spending money to buy a ticket to the game or whatever else you want for the weekend. If you live in KC I will give you $150 instead of the plane fare. Or, I will fly someone else into town for you ( in addition to the $100 spending money).

SECOND PRIZE: $1 per pound lost! (or $51, whichever is greater)

THIRD PRIZE: $50 cash (donated by BigRedChief -- thanks!)

FOURTH PRIZE: DVD of "The Complete History of the Kansas City Chiefs" and your Jersey of choice from jersey101.com (donated by Mr. Flopnuts -- THANKS!)

WHY?

I have been on here previously with failed "non-drinking" threads, so I am about to really make a commitment to my health.

I turn 40 in '09, I'm 30 Lbs overweight and I plan to lose it by April. I want motivation from my fellow Planeteers and I want to motivate anyone who might want to make a lifestyle change as well, and also make it interesting for us who participate. I plan to lose 12 percent of my body weight (230 Lbs to 200 lbs) in six months. If you can get focused and beat me, and come out on top, I'll see you at Nzoner's bash, or you can go to a game on me, etc.

This is intended to establish a network of supportive people helping each other make a positive change and stay focused and GET OUT OF THAT RUT!

Seriously, GoChiefs inspired me, he is no longer looking like Shrek and he lost something like 50 lbs.

VERIFICATION: Since I will potentially be giving upwards of $500 to the winner, there's a lot at stake. So you will need to document your weight via video or camera phone, etc. video yourself on a scale in front of a mirror, with that current day's newspaper. on December 31 or January 1. and email Mpeg or Wav to me, or post on host site with link.

I will send you the same of me, so we're all even.
I promise I will not post nor forward any images nor video for any reason, ever.

Contest is limited to CP users who have 250+ posts and have been a member since at least June 2008.

If you are serious and would like to participate, post here and also PM me so we can work out the details of your verification.

I'd like to keep this thread going as a support system for the contestants to post their progress (I would like to do monthly weigh-ins) and SUPPORT each other in making a shift in their lives.

I am completely sincere and serious about this. Please don't post here if you are a jackass or wise-cracker. I really believe in the goodness of this forum, so it will be really great to see what we can do together starting January 1st.

Think about it.

EDIT: What I mean by that is that it wont be easy just to lose the weight, but I could probably shed a lot more weight than anybody else.

my pants are starting to feel really tight, it is so uncomfortable, I haven't worked out in three or four months at all - if I needed to take a PT test in the very near future, it would be UGLY!

I just weighed myself yesterday, because I was curious how much I had gained. I weighed in at 231. SERIOUSLY? 231????? WTF??? My weight (according to BMI, or whatever it's called) is supposed to be 189. I was just 205 over the summer, feeling good, comfortable in my swimsuit, still knocking out 90-100 pushups in under 2 minutes. but Last night I barely did 35 pushups in two minutes.

when you lose it you lose it fast (not the weight either)
count me in. PM on the way. Great idea, BTW.

I would prefer the bash, since it is a very social event and I will be there. But the winner has their pick of game.

And, I do think you'd have a great chance at it, but you'd have to really be focused, bro. Six months is a long time.

about 6 years ago I made the commitment to loose weight. I got on the atkins diet and excersised my butt off. I lost 50 pounds in 6 month and another 25 pounds in the last 6 months. 75 pounds total lost in 1 year. It was pretty cool, but I ended up too thin. I shouldn't have just stayed at the 50 pound loss.

Anyway, I kept the weight off for 3 years, but now I'm about 10 pounds shy of my original weight. I've been working long (up to 27 hours with only 2 30 minutes breaks) hours, holidays, etc etc, But I made a bet with my friend kind of along the same lines. We are both hoping to drop about 25 pounds by April 1st.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this. I don't want to compete with this as I have done it before and believe I can do it again...and will do it again, so I wouldn't want to take your money.

What you are doing is pretty cool though. Good luck to you all.

Dammit. Bad timing. A year and a half ago I decided I didn't like the way I looked and dropped 60 pounds in about 9 months. That doesn't sound like a ton, but I went from 215 to 155, so that's what.... around 25%? I've put 5 of it or so back on, but I've been lifting 3-4 days a week, so I think a little bit of it's muscle.

I've lost ~50lbs in the last 1.5 years so I'm not sure I've got enough left to lose for the win, but I really want to get another 30+ off. If I can get from 305 to 220-225 I will be a happy and svelte man.

Awesome contest man, would love to participate but those damn rules haha I started working at a Fitness Center over a year ago and got serious about losing weight and went from 260 that I had put on for football down to 220. After leaving that job and going back to school and being around my friends that always eat out and drink i have went back up to 235...I'm shooting for 190 by this time next year. Good luck to everyone that participates in this

I have another 20-25 pounds I'm trying to lose. I changed my diet in June and started working out hard in September and have lost close to 50 lbs. I've hit a bit of a plateau as far as my weight, but I continue to get slimmer. The muscle I'm gaining is keeping my weight from dropping. I'm stuck right at 250. I graduated high school ('95) in damn good shape at around 230 and I'd like to get there again.

I'm going for 25%. Is that possible in five months?

I think it depends on how much you weigh.

Healthy weight loss is between one to two pounds a week. If you can consistently lose at that rate, you'll keep the weigh off long term. You may lose a little more than that at the beginning (especially if you're carrying a lot of water weight) but that should be your target.

Avoid salt, stick to organics, avoid red meat and exercise. It should come off quickly. Even if your exercise consists of walking a mile a day. If you drink beer, switch to the the 64 calorie beer or better yet, stop. Switch to vodka tonic/soda. Either way, it is extremely difficult to lose weight if you continue to drink because alcohol slows down your metabolism, making it even more difficult to burn fat.

Weigh yourself once a week (and no more) for motivation.

Good luck!

So what method are you people using to shed the pounds?

I have pretty much been using my own interpretation of "Body For Life" for a while now. Thus far it's helped get off 50lbs in a little over a year, but I haven't been very strict. At times when I am hardcore I can drop more than 5 lbs in a week. Essentially this program involves 3 weight resistance workouts (geared towards adding bulk) with 3 cardio workouts a week. For food it has six small meals a day that are essentially low fat, high protein, moderate amount of complex carbs and an eye on getting enough veggies/fiber. It provides for one 'free day' each week where you can eat whatever you want and you don't workout.

As for my changes to the regular plan they are as follows: I stopped doing the interval cardio training and instead just do long cardio workouts (anywhere from 45 minutes to an 1.5 hours). Since I have knee and back problems I rarely jog and prefer ellipticals or bikes. I primarily started the cardio change as training for climbing mountains last summer. I skip the expensive EAS products and instead go with balance 'bare' bars and muscle milk for meal replacements. Although I am routinely eating crap a meal here or there that is off plan since I haven't been very hardcore for a long time now. Usually it's dinner with my family that is higher in carbs and fat than what I should be having. I rarely do a binging free day though.

I think the only problem with this plan for this type of contest is the aim of adding muscle bulk. The additional muscle will help you burn more calories during cardio workouts and keep your metabolism fired up. I suspect you could drop the weight lifting towards then end to help get your weight down, but frankly I care more about being tone and seeing my abs than the number on the scale.

Good luck all!

I just bought it today so it's in hand and ready for someone to claim. Thanks again for doing this, and good luck to everyone trying to better their life.

I'm honestly expecting to win this. I lost 115 pounds this year and it was all in the first six months of the year. I weighed 440, now I weigh 330. I was down to 325 in July but have put 5 back on in the last couple of weeks. I expect to be at an absolute maximum of 250 by June 1. That will be over 20% of body weight lost. I genuinely hope somebody beats me. If I can be of any assistance to anyone shoot me a smoke. I'll keep it private and refer you to whatever resources I'm aware of that can help you. If I can't help you I'll send you to another member of this board who helped me immensely last year, provided they don't mind.

I did in January. Today I weigh around 330. On July 1st I weighed 325. I honestly think I can drop almost 100lbs between January and June. I don't know, it won't come off as fast as it did when I weighed that much. But I do know how to take it off quickly, and healthily.

I am also going to go 100 days without marijuana.

I smoked pot the entire time I was losing weight. The fact that I didn't give in to the munchies was IMO as big of an accomplishment as losing the weight itself. I'm actually thinking it's time for another hiatus though just for some reflection, so I think I'll go January to June not smoking this time as well. I've heard that running is so much easier if you don't smoke pot. A pack and a half of cigarettes everyday makes it hard enough.

My best advice is not to look at this as a diet, because it's not a diet, it's not a short term plan, you have to make an entire lifestyle change.

Generally carbs and starches are synonymous but whatever works for ya. I'm doing the opposite with the high protein lower carb (not zero carbs). This has always worked for me. I say lower carb because carbs equals energy and my days usually start at 5 a.m. so I need some energy for sure. I'm just going to be careful not to take in any carbs later in the day or evenings, no sugars at all. I have done this before with great success. Just don't go overboard. Weighing too little can be as unhealthy as weighing too much. Seriously.

I won't. I was a fit 120 last year.. it's easy to slip out of it and put on the lbs. (especially when no gym activity is involved). It's gonna be hard to get back in a routine.

well negative motivation is fine... but the positive motivation of knowing that Ill be in front of a couple hundred of KC's finest business executives, is enough motivation to get in shape.

Thanks though GoatCheese. Im proud of the hard work you have done... hopefully a fine piece of female ass throws herself your way soon.

Notice, I prefaced it with "female" ass...

I agree with 116. My wife was 5'4" and weighed 105. 36C boobs. She looked great.

I just moved into a new place so I cant find the fucking scale.

I am somewhere in between 280 and 300 I think.

I've probably gained a couple extra pounds over the last couple days.

Cant wait to see how much I actually weigh.

P.S. If any of you girls in So Cal want to 'workout' together, we can set something up and both benefit....wink wink.

Just weighed in at 294. Egads!

That's how much I weighed when I saw the doctor on Dec. 1, 2006, the day after the scary bus accident I was in. By taking off a a pound or three a week for about 15 or 16 months, I've been blessed to get down to under 200. I've been able to maintain that weight by being careful with the sweets and still jogging a lot.

You just have to make sure you burn more calories than you take in. If you take in 500 fewer calories a day than you burn, on average, that adds up to 50 pounds of lost body weight in a year.
