LIONS PROMOTE LEWAND, MAYHEW (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/12/29/lions-promote-lewand-mayhew/)

On the day that the Lions fired coach Rod Marinelli, the team also rewarded two men (http://www.detroitlions.com/document_display.cfm?document_id=479753) who are inextricably linked with the embarrassing failures of the franchise over the past eight seasons.

Tom Lewand has been promoted from COO to President, and Martin Mayhew has been given the permanent position of General Manager.

The team also announced that defensive coordinator Joe Barry has been terminated, and that offensive coordinator Jim Colletto has been reassigned to offensive line coach.

Elsewhere, secondary coach Jimmy Kaye and assistant offensive line coach Mike Barry have been released, and defensive line coach Joe Cullen’s contract will not be renewed. Also, assistant director of pro personnel Dave Boller won’t be retained.

So, basically, not much is changing in Motown. To the ongoing delight of Packers, Bears, and Vikings fans.

Unbelievable. It must really suck to be a Lions fan.

Further proof that stupid people have no clue that they are stupid...

Good for the Chiefs because that only leaves the Browns and the Chiefs competing for the top GM prospects

Damn. I'm glad I'm not a Lions fan. It makes more sense why Barry Sanders got the fuck out and never looked back.

I hope they become infatuated with Andre Smith in the draft

I think the Rams will.

Detroit picks ahead of them, and needs the OT help too

Is there a "Where are they now?" on Barry?

I'd be interested.

I think most people praised Mayhew for shipping Williams to the Cowboys and getting good picks. Not bad for your first move.

That move was a no brainer considering they have Calvin Johnson and couldn't afford both of them

The praise was for negotiating the compensation. They got a first, third and sixth in '09 and another late round pick in '10.

I'd pity them, but I'm a Chiefs fan.

Now if Detriot could get Marty to come in and be the coach, KC fans could then rest easy...

Marty would become the greatest coach in franchise history. Really. I don't even know who woud be second on that list.

You can read his book.

I'm pretty sure he owns a Bank in Oklahoma City, and lives there as well.

He's come out on what his thoughts are on the Lions as an organization and made it public a few years back. The Lions are probably the worst organization in the NFL from what I can gather on Barry's opinion.

From one of my good friends who is a lifetime Lions fan:

"uh-- they're bringing back Millen's deputy as GM. unreal, just unreal. The hits keep comin'"

Let's hope Clark does a little better than this

Marty would become the greatest coach in franchise history. Really. I don't even know who woud be second on that list.

In terms of wins it Wayne Fontes with 67 wins, but he has a losing record. For success it would be Buddy Parker who was 50-24-2 who won a pair of NFL championships back in the 50s then quit on the day before the 1957 season started to go to hapless Pittsburg. During his tenure in Pittsburg they cut Johnny Unitas, passed on drafting Jim Brown and traded Len Dawson. Parker's assistant, George Wilson, won the NFL title in 1957 which started a drought in which they would not win a playoff game until 1992. Wilson was also famous as the Dolphins first head coach and used his son for a QB. The Lions also won the championship in 1936 under Potsy Clark, who was out by 1938. Clark had a record of 49-20-6. Interesting to note that Ford's first HC in 1964 lasted only 2 seasons.
