Who will our new GM hire?

New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, two NFL sources confirmed to ESPN's Michael Smith.

Herm Edwards recaps the Chiefs' 2008 season and addresses his status with the organization.
Pioli was seen packing up his office Tuesday afternoon, a Patriots source said.
The decision to hire Pioli likely means Herman Edwards will not be back as Chiefs head coach next season. Among the top candidates to succeed Edwards is New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio will replace Pioli as vice president of player personnel, league sources told ESPN.
Pioli, 43, has been with the Patriots for nine years.
Pioli should find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli."

Steve Spagnuolo please. Let all the great "interviewees" go elsewhere while we get a guy who can actually, you know, COACH FOOTBALL.

If not him, just someone with proven scheming ability (preferably on defense) and a set of balls.

The ESPN link added that tidbit, as well...

Doesn't matter to me. Whoever he hires I'm going to trust is the right guy.
Pioli's got a proven track record of evaluating talent. He's been a coach on offense and defense in college. He's played the game. Been in a front office for years watching how Bellicheck works his magic (or maybe Scott was also a creator or helped create that magic?) some of that has to sunk in over the years.

I think it's going to be Ferentz. When you listen to Belichick and Pioli discuss the operation of the Pats, they always took about what good friends they are, how they are on the same page, that each has a veto right for draft picks, etc. I think Pioli is going to try to recreate that in KC with his good buddy Ferentz.

SOunds good to me. It will be up to whomever gets the job to hire the other coaches...but I have to think if it's a Defense-first guy, that they would give Chan Gailey serious consideration for O-coordinator...he's experienced and can run the show on that side of the ball....could be a good thing.

DON’T COUNT ON SCHWARTZ-PIOLI PAIRING (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/13/dont-count-on-schwartz-pioli-pairing/)

Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2009, 8:43 p.m. EST
In response to a suggestion in some circles that new Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli might pursue Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to become the new head coach of the team, a league source tells us that it will not be happening.
Per the source, Pioli and Schwartz “despise each other.”
Though Schwartz looks to be the favorite for the Lions job, his camp could be floating the possibility of Kansas City hiring Schwartz in order to squeeze Detroit into hiring him prematurely and/or giving him a better deal.
That said, it’s our understanding that the Chiefs are not and will not be an option for him.
