He keeps saying smart.......if there's one thing Herm isn't it's smart...

Ahahaha Pioli doesn't care about hair length so it's nice to know the Chiefs won't be bitching about that anymore.

I wonder what the ETA on his first firing is. Be it Herm or anybody else.

I am imaging a blanket firing. Probably a memo or something...maybe a principal type thing over the speakers in the building:

"Would Herm Edwards, Gun, LJ, DMac, all position coaches, all trainers, fuck it, everybody who was hired by Carl, please come to the GM's office immediately. Please bring the contents of your desks as well."

Also, did it seem to anyone else that Pioli really likes Cassel, and should there be more speculation about an attempt to bring him here? And if he does, do we accept that Pioli knows more about Cassel, or do we continue to think that he sucks and that we judge talent better?

i agree with pioli's thoughts on the combine I usually don't buy into it its fun to see who is in the draft I watched what Flaco did last year and judged him by the combine and I was wrong. The fact that Clark ever gave Herm a vote of confidence lessens my opinion of him as an owner, and a human being. Didn't see the presser, but read through the details here, and saw a quick snippet on ESPN. As for Herm, another thing to remember is that Clark has obviously expressed his desire to retain Herm. Given that, I imagine that Clark would at least agree to meet with Herm and talk about things, if nothing else than to appease Clark. Plus, it wouldn't do Pioli any good to just immediately axe the owner's choice for HC - there is some professional courtesy involved here.

At this point, I wouldn't read too much into his comments about Herm...

It certainly could. The Raiders are going no where fast. The Chargers are getting old on the O line along with LT, and there is no telling how Merriman comes back next season. The Broncos will definitely score points but overall their defense has much less talent, especially young talent than the Chiefs do. I do not expect a division title next season but anything is possible. The right hires for coaches and a good draft could go a long way to making that happen.

I'll be curious to see if Pioli can finagle compensation for him. The nice thing is that if it were Carl, he would have too much emotion invested in it, like he did with Gonzo, because the guy was his personal #1 pick. Pioli probably doesn't give a #$%^ and would probably look to deal him with a plan to use any compensation in another deal, because he has an actual plan on how to do things...

Bearcat
01-14-2009, 06:17 PM
Didn't see the presser, but read through the details here, and saw a quick snippet on ESPN. As for Herm, another thing to remember is that Clark has obviously expressed his desire to retain Herm. Given that, I imagine that Clark would at least agree to meet with Herm and talk about things, if nothing else than to appease Clark. Plus, it wouldn't do Pioli any good to just immediately axe the owner's choice for HC - there is some professional courtesy involved here.

At this point, I wouldn't read too much into his comments about Herm...

Yeah, like others, I got the feeling that Herm is gone, but regardless of what Pioli is actually thinking right now -- keep him, fire him, gonna talk about it -- he wasn't going to say anything that would give it away. He's obviously showing Clark and Herm some respect... it's not like he's going to fly into KC and start firing people like he's been a GM for 30 years.

Based on what I've read about Pioli though, I agree with Laz... Pioli is humble, doesn't care about titles, etc; while Herm is pretty damn arrogant for a guy who's won two football games since 10/22/07. After 'careful consideration' and 'talking with many people' and 'losing sleep over the decision', Pioli needs to throw Herm under the bus and never look back.

I take it as a personal afront that Clark Hunt hasn't fired Herm already. To leave the fanbase hanging like this is more than is deserved. The fact that Clark ever gave Herm a vote of confidence lessens my opinion of him as an owner, and a human being. We can read whatever we want into the situation after todays presser, but the fact that it hasn't been resloved already is a slap in the face of the average fan.

Look: If Clark fires the hated head coach, the fan base loves him, but his new GM has no political capital coming in. If the GM does it, the fan base loves the new GM and ergo loves Clark for hiring. Thus he gets double the fan political capital by letting his new GM fire the shitty head coach. Its a no-fucking-brainer.

I think Pioli's ace in the hole is Kirk Ferentz. There is no way Kirk leaves for any other NFL gig, if he leaves it will be to join up with Scott which has to be the best situation for a guy like Ferentz to come to the NFL.

That said Pioli can talk to Herm, get his thoughts on our players, make a decision and fire Herm. When that's done Pioli will look at who is available and and go with a Schwartz or Sprags, and if those guys are gone, he goes with Ferentz.

I got the sense that he's confident he can get his man. How refreshing.

Congratulations on the Pioli hire.

The only way I see him retaining Herm is if the plan is to ensure another year of high draft picks and then make Herm the fall guy. That would give Pioli two drafts to build a solid foundation and a year to gain experience as a GM. Doesn't taste too good right now, but it might be worth it.

In all likelihood Pioli is just being politically correct and will give Herm a chance to save face and make a deal with Clark to do the honorable thing and resign.

Herm, being the weasel that he is, will hang on for the full 3 million he'll receive if he's terminated, then he will use his press contacts to play the race card . Good riddance!

Hey - if Pioli is REALLY good he will trade Herm for a draft pick. Nahh - no one could be stupid enough to give up a valuable draft pick for Herm.

Again - great pickup for the Chiefs and a 99.999% probability that Herm will be gone very shortly.

I don't see Herman and Scott working together effectively. Scott is the straight-A, distinguished-honors student, and Herman is the barely passing regular core plan student. Herman doesn't see things for what they really are; He cannot see past the surface. Conversely, Scott seems to already see the Chiefs for what they are - a wreck, for top to bottom, including the front office. Herman does have passion for what he does, and I do believe that he gave his best effort in KC. But Herman's style is old; His conservative nature represents the old league. The new NFL is a complex organization with high-powered people controlling it, and thousands of smaller people running it. The coaches that are most effective are the ones who are innovative and willing to change. Good football teams change every season because that's what is needed to win consistently. Scott recognizes that, and I believe he work toward modernizing the Chiefs, starting by selecting a new head coach.

I have 5 posts since 2006, not exactly a troll. The compliments weren't meant to be back handed. The trade remark was a joke at King Carls expense.

The Chiefs made a great pickup in Pioli and he'll surely rid the organization of Herm in short order.

My optimistic outlook says we sniff a .500 season next year showing great improvement like the Cards did last season under Wisenhunt and make the challenge for the AFC West title the following year. Just my hunch..500 could win the west next year - it did this one.:)

Listening to the press conference again...

There is going to be a dramatic change in the Chiefs' organizational philosophy. The Chiefs during Carl's reign [with the probable exception of Vermeil's offense] have been a team that attempted to collect outstanding athletes and the coaches job was to motivate them to play hard and win one-on-one match-ups.

The Pioli way is going to be quite different -- going after smart, disciplined guys who may not be quite as athletic but can be counted on to do their ****ing job, and the coaches' job will be to get the players to execute flawlessly. Needless to say, Herm doesn't fit.

There's some "meh" moments, but overall you gotta' love it. I have to say that this "cold shoulder/out of the loop" stuff that some members of the media have been crying about may be just the wonderful fact that Pioli is a very commited and thus busy guy doing his job who doesn't HAVE a lot of time to commit to a bunch of mic-monkeys.

DCS LIKES!

It is interesting that on the Chiefs' website that have quotes from people around the league praising Pioli... the one guy they don't have a quote from is Herm.

The one guy? You're saying they have quotes on the site from everyone involved in the National Football League, and/or every employee of the Kansas City Chiefs, except for Herman Edwards?

I also liked the answer to Gretz's question about scouting....

this seemed to be the order of importance

1) is the guy a team player
2) does he fit our system
3) how athletic is he

This team is going to blown completely apart.

Two things:

1) After his previous foot-in mouth comments, clamming up is the right move.
"It's the smart move. Tessio was always the smarter one". "But I'm gonna' wait".

We all know what happened to Abe Begota, yes?

2) Welcome to the New Arrowhead Reality; silence is the order of the day until it's time to speak. I love it. We are on our way to being a legitimate NFL Franchise.

Yes. I've always felt that people who put so much stock in combine stats lacked faith in their own evaluation skills. They wanted to let the numbers tell them what a good football player is. Pioli exudes confidence in his ability to identify a quality player based on what he does on the field, regardless of what the "measureables" might say.

What do you think he was going to say when he said, "There are no other Tom Brady's and no other Matt Cassell's. Now there's one guy who -" and then he stopped.

I bet he was talking about one of the QBs in the draft, and then remembered not to tip his hand.

We heard all that before when Tamba Hali and Brandon Flowers were drafted. That does not represent a philosophical shift for the Chiefs. Other things (e.g. drafting for scheme rather than taking best available talent and designing to them) are much more different with Pioli vs. Herm/Kuharich.

To me, the Combine is like the Playbill for the theater; it's your introduction to the cast as well as some minimal-yet pertinent information regarding what you're about to see.

It seems to me, and I hope it's true, that Pioli is a "moxie/mojo guy" when it all comes down to making the final call. DCS loves the mojo, and this club needs more of it!

The people quoted on the Chiefs' site either spent years working with Pioli (Kraft, Belichick, Newsome, Weiss) or are members of his family (Parcells).

Herm, to my knowledge, fits into none of those categories. So I'm not sure why it would be "interesting" that he wasn't included.

Where are Tom Brady's comments, that's a valid question. Or Romeo Crennel's. Or his Aunt Pat Pioli for some more family perspective.

Because other than Clark Hunt, there is no more high profile person within the Chiefs organization to comment on Pioli's hiring than Herm.

This guy LOVES football, and you can tell that the challenge and chance to build his own and first empire means more to him than money ever could.

This was a GREAT hire and move on Clark's part; we are FINALLY on our merry fucking way.
