The wife and I plan on starting our new hobby of hiking this year. Primarily long day hikes. To get in shape and used to hiking again, since I haven't really done it since Scouts, is there any place in the general KC area that is good hiking? We are planning trips to Colorado and Wyoming later this year. I'm just looking for places to go so we can get used to hiking with packs on and such but I would like it to be scenic if possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance :D

I have wondered the same thing, but don't know of anything in the area.

MArk Twain National Park is about all I could find aside from trails at like Hillsdale lake and such. And they may be worth it instead of wasting the drive down south?

There are some ok places out towards Lawrence (the lake and KS state park areas). I mostly hang in the Ozarks though.

You could try the Johnson County trails to start with. You can get a trail guide online. Then move on to the more challenging trails like in the Mark Twain National Forest.

Your best bet is to buy this book:

There are or at least were some good hiking trails out along the Blue River off of Holmes and 104th or thereabouts. I don't really remember where the trailhead was.

You could hike all the way around good old Lake Olathe. The hills on the northwest side are pretty steep. I've seen a bald eagle or two around there lately, too, so that is something cool to see.

Landahl Park has some good trails too. It's huge.

Minor Park is pretty cool too.

I mainly mountain bike on them, but they all have multipurpose trails for hiking, horse riding, etc. Just be sure the trail your on isn't designated bike only. It's easy to figure it out.

Those are the ones I was thinking of down along the Blue River!
