View Full Version : Chiefs Would you rather have Shanny or Cowher?

Well, now we are supposedly in negotiations with Shannahan. Which raises the question in my mind of which you would rather have.... Mike Shannahan or Bill Cowher.

Personally, I would rather have Bill Cowher. I know that he only won one Super Bowl, but the Steelers were relevant every year. The Steelers were constantly letting their best free agents walk, and Cowher still managed to get them in the playoffs year after year.

Cowher also has a close relationship with Pioli. I think that would allow them to work better together than Shanny and Pioli.

Now, one thing that Shanny has over Cowher is that he (apparently, according to reports) is willing to take a head coaching job right now. The fact that Herm would be gone may be enough in itself.

Shanny is a clearly great offensive mind. Plus, we get to keep Chan Gailey, because the head coaching situation would be settled.

Shanny or Cowher would both keep Gailey. Cowher called Gailey the best OC he has ever worked with, and Shanny was going to hire him last year but the Chiefs beat him to it.

Shanny comes across as arrogant. He has done nothing without John Elway. It would give the Chiefs an advantage against the Broncos for a year or two, and it would be fun to watch Broncos fans if the Chiefs won a Super Bowl with him.

If both were available right now, I would go with Cowher. But, since Shanny is the only one who can replace Herm this year....... Ugh. I still go with Cowher, but what say you?

I don't believe all the Shannahan speculation, as it makes very little sense. If you know his situation, he is just finishing a home that is beyond description and my comprehension.

Also, the Broncos owe him a lot of money, a lot of money.

Why would he want to work for the Chiefs? Why would he want to work at all?

That being said, I would take him over Cowher in a heartbeat. Even though Shannahan, has failed miserably at putting together a defense, for a very long time.

He is one of the best game day coaches alive, IMO. He takes full advantage of everything he can, in his power, to win the game.

I'd like a young coach. Let KC build it's own tradition so that 10 years down the line the media will be talking about the Pioli coaching tree as being one of the best.

My first preference would be for neither of them. However, since that isn't an option in this poll, I'll play nice. If it has to be one of the two, I say Cowher. Without question.

Cowher scares me... the fact that it took him 15 years and an injury to his QB to win a superbowl is less than impressive to me.... I would imagine he is still sending chrismas cards and fruit baskets to those officals every year...

One of the biggest most blantant screw jobs in the NFL history... Congrats Cowher...

He can stay the the studio, with his messed up face and play with Marino and Sharpe under the desk...

Before the Todd Haley rumors I was gradually warming up to the Shanahan possibility. Getting Haley is intriguing. Shanny is more of a sure thing. But it has to be with Pioli having the final word in personnel matters and D-Coordinator

As for Cowher, he is slowly slipping into 3rd place in my book.

HERM OUT, SHANAHAN IN?
Posted by Mike Florio on January 22, 2009, 9:31 a.m.
As Chiefs coach Herm Edwards continues to slowly twist in the wind, we’re hearing stronger indications that he won’t be twisting much longer.

Though it’s hardly a surprise, the signs currently are pointing at Edwards being fired with one year left on his contract.

Then the question becomes identifying the next head coach. And, inexplicably, a name gaining traction via rumors and reports that have been sent to us by readers is former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

On the surface, Shanahan and G.M. Scott Pioli don’t really fit, assuming that Shanahan aspires to run the show in the same way he ran it in Denver.

But there’s always a chance that Shanahan has reflected on his ultimate failure in Denver, and that he has realized that his errors in personnel, both with free agency and the draft, placed far more pressure on him as a coach. And maybe he has decided that he’d rather let an established personnel exec call the shots and just focus on coaching the team.

Then again, maybe Shanahan simply will say whatever he has to say and do whatever he has to do to get his foot in the door, and then he’ll worry about trying to take the place over.

Regardless, we expect something to start happening soon in Kansas City.

Another thing I want to be reassured about the Rat is I want to make sure he won't have any kind of power to undermine Pioli. I don't know how, but I have this nightmare that he might agree to relinquish a lot of power at first and in a few years somehow stage a successful coupe to push Pioli out and take over. After all, they don't call him Rat for nothing.

I think my answer might surprise some people.

If our only choices were either Cowher or Shanahan, I'd take Cowher.

Listening to ESPN about a month ago, Mortenson was talking about Cowher's eventual return to coaching and he said that when Cowher does decide to return to coaching that he wants to go to a team that either has an established QB, or is in position to draft one early because he learned that it's hard to advance in the playoffs with journeyman QBs.

I know Cowher would bring a toughness and and stress fundamentals, with a Q as a priority, he may just be able to get something more from the offense than we might otherwise expect.

And Shanahan, to me, is one of the more overrated coaches in the last 30 years.

And I can't stand the rat bastard.

Love em or hate em, you can't deny that the Steelers old-school approach and commitment to superiority in the trenches keeps them consistent year in and year out.
Pittsburgh made Cowher a better coach. Plus, the guy has had some quality, stress-free time off. If he DOES want to coach again, you know his batteries are charged and he's fired-up and ready to GO.

Cowher went to a superbowl with Neil O'Donnel....the Rat has been humiliated in the playoffs since elway left...there is no comparison, imo

True, but how many times was Cowher an early exit like his daddy Marty?

Its okay, all I was stating is you can make the facts anyway you want them to support your arguement... Thats all..

Yes they are both retreads, I really wouldnt care which one was here actually...

Says your Avatar....

I'm simply doing my part to let any media( who mine from this BB constantly )or Official eyes know exactly where I stand.

You say you'd be happy with either, so what's your point?

I'd be happier with neither.

Now, switching gears:

It has come to my attention that current dribble-ball standings put one more "L" in your column than mine! Interesting!

Now don't punk out on me; I want you and at least 4 other posters to respond and make use of the phrase "Strength Of Schedule".

DO NOT DISAPPOINT!

Yep; calandar says "2009".

Yep 2009, New team, reloading will be a decent team come tourney time and NCAA tourney time...

Have no expecations this year, Maybe contend for Big 12 title this year, and a sweet 16 (Maybe)

But when you lose 7 of your 9 main players, you can expect alittle struggle...

I don't even watch basketball, I just happened to be listening to 610 today.

By the way, that station sucks. They said that KU had lost 4 in a row, but the KU website says different.
And those two guys, Cowboy and Cowbitch? Just fucking unbearable. 810 feed has been down all week due to something or another. It's been like going from shit-sandwich to shit with no bread.

Well I guess you realized your first mistake... 610 is like listening to a toliet flush all day...

No KU has lost 4 this season, will probably end up with 2-3 in conference, 1 Big 12 tourney and 1 in NCAA's...

probably a 24-9 team...

Maybe we'll get a decent Tourney showing on both sides of the state line this year.

It's not so much what I want as it is just narrowing the field. The only fact we have at this point is the scouts being sent to the Senior Bowl, and Herm being told to "stay home".

If there was anyone in the Ravens camp that might have been a potential candidate, I'm guessing they already interviewed and it didn't work, or Pioli is just waiting until after the Super Bowl to begin the process for candidates from Baltimore, Arizona, and Pittsburgh.
Depending on who wins the SB, you can adjust said candidates "stock" accordingly I would think.

If we're going with someone from either of those camps, the next choice would be, "do you want an Offensive-minded HC( Arizona ), or a Defensive-minded HC( Pittsburgh )"?
Just like everyone else, this is pure speculation but it seems the logical path at this point.

I thought interviews could be done until Sat. for assistants from Ari. and Pit.

Maybe Scotty has his man and has to wait until after the SB to announce it?
