View Full Version : Computers How do you know if your boss is spying on your computer?

As some of you may know, i work at a "Hot-Rod" shop. I have the typical auto shop TV boss; short fuse, screams, yells and is overly confident, likes destroying stuff and so forth.

Anywho...when i started working here, (Maybe 3-4 years ago) he told me that we would do random drug screenings and that all of the computers were monitored (he said he had software such as Investigator and the like) and that he would be on the lookout.

Since then, i have yet to take a drug test and have become the backbone of this company. I run these computers as well, and i have yet to see any trace of spyware, nor would he know how to install it.

But, im still curious. If there is spyware, how could i find it? Help a Planet member remain a planet member.

Some of the really crappy ones will show up as a process in the task manager, but you have to know what you're looking for. The good ones won't, though. Even if he doesn't have monitoring software directly on the PC it doesn't stop him from seeing what you're doing on the Internet.

I've looked under installed programs and didn't see anything. I've looked at the process and haven't seen anything abnormal.....but if you knew my boss, you wouldn't put it past him. the most paranoid man i've ever met in my life. but, i've been doing this for 3 years now....so...

Nah, I was just questioning the validity of your claim that you are the backbone of the company. A lot of people who become entrenched in their positions seem to think that way eventually. Hell, we're all probably guilty of it. But no one is irreplaceable. No one. Unless you work for free and give great blowjobs.

Why not check the server logs. If your running the computers.

Depending on what the network infrastructure is, he could track where you are going on the interwebs, and for how long. He could see anything you are downloading also. There are a few ways, and none of them have to be installed on the local machine.

But he would have to have a serious setup for that, which to me doesn't sound like the case.

Sorry, let me re-phrase that. By running, i mean "maintain". I install all of the programs, maintain them, service them etc. Basic stuff that a lot of the car guys around here don't know how to do.

So when you say "Server Logs" it goes right over my head.

I know a lot of stuff about the company that not even he knows. Yeah, i could get fired, but with the relationship we have, and as much as he depends on me for everything, i doubt it. It would take a shit load of training to replace me, and he hates training people...

Well, we have about 5 machines in the network. I know all of the work email accounts get CC'd to his email...But i don't think we have anything radical.

He would have to have a Server acting as a proxy server, or some sort of firewall basically. If you arent running any of that, chances are pretty nil. Unless the account that you use is not the admin account, there could be some ways to do it using an admin account on the local machine with some very specific software, but the account the rest of the shop uses would have to be just a user account basically.

And even then, you would probably see the software in the add/remove programs.

you could look around on the machines but he might get wise to it (if he is logging things)....

the fact he hasn't thrown a random drug test (any suspects?).... makes me wonder.

May monitor internet history from the machines/browser? (are you looking at PR0n websites?)....

sounds like the (blind cc) keeps you honest in not sending pr0n jpg files etc around.

I think he probably monitors (or at least tries to) our web history through our browsers, but i delete it every time i view something that's iffy. He knows that I frequent the Planet, but he doesn't know how frequently i frequent the planet, or Nickscipio, or any of the websites in the adult link thread....

I KNOW he doesn't know how to set this stuff up, but he is close friends with a computer technician that owns his own business managing networks and various other programs and computer related stuff for small companies. That's why im worried.

You mentioned a specific firewall. We have DSL, and he is always saying that there is a firewall on the DSL modem itself, and if we reset it, it could fuck up the firewall. Could that be it or something else?

Here is a link to a download for Hijackthis. If you run this it will show you every process that runs at startup. You can check the ones you want to remove if there is anything that you don't want to be running but I don't think that is what you are trying to do. If you want, run it and post the list here. I can look at it to tell you if anything looks out of the ordinary. That will not tell you if there are monitoring the actual network though. That can get more complicated and I don't think he would be doing that.

I would tell you, but after that whole Claythan deal, I'm a little reluctant to post that information. We're very, very well known in our community and I Don't want some of the stuff i post on here leaking out to our customers or haters (god knows there's enough haters out there). I know one of the members here has been to our website and didn't even know that i worked there and was a member here as well.

But, i'll give you some information since i'm very proud of my job and what we do. We build early model Mustangs & fords, 64-70. 150K and up cars for, obviously, affluent men. We also sell specialty aftermarket performance parts.

We just landed another contract with a pitcher who played for the phillies when they won the championship. He pulled up with some UFC fighter, i forget the UFC fighters name, but the baseball player claims he's pretty big. I don't follow UFC so i don't know. I guess they're opening a gym around here somewhere. I would tell you the pitchers name, but I'm not sure if that's a conflict of interest or not.

While im not saying tha no way, no how is that happening, the chances of it are very unlikely. By firewall i am talking about a 3rd party piece of hardware that is rather expensive. And if you are one that does most of the care for the network, then you would probaby know of this device.

This is very easy to check.

1.Take a photo of his head and torso.
2. Insert the .jpg into any photo editing software.
3. Stretch the photo into the shape of an erect Harry and the Hangdowns.
4. Set newly created photo as "background".
5. Wait.
