View Full Version : Chiefs Chiefs free agency pickups will increase!

When one looks at the Patriots free agency and trade propensity under Pioli in comparison to the Chiefs under Peterson in the last six years there certainly is a distinct difference both in quantity and in known names.
This should certainly make a fundamental change in our trade/free agency policy. I for one can not wait to see who he brings in. Another interesting tidbit comes with looking at their trades since 2003. (also on that site)
Pioli certainly seems to be willing to do some well researched horse trading in order to acquire the depth of players it takes to run deep into the playoffs.

And if you look through those names, every one of those players suck.

The only reason they were any good was because of Brady!

[QUOTE=Hog Farmer;5446635]And if you look through those names, every one of those players suck.

They usually signed players to temporarily fill a need, not to sign the biggest star. That's a smart way of doing things. Serviceable pros but not superstars.

Exactly, cuz without him they only won 11 games.

That was only because they had Cassel.

Who until last year was??? I remember everyone screaming how the Pats had no plan B if Brady went down.

I am hoping he can do better than that list of "where are theys"

This team needs some major talent then you can sign the for one year crap.

I have to agree with Hog Farmer on this one. That list has a lot of people who didn't contribute very much on it.

a team normally does sign more free agents when they have their core and are contenders

That was only because they had Cassel.

So first it was only becasuse they had Brady. Then it was only because they had Cassel? :hmmm:

Both late round draft picks, mind you.

You can get some good players in Free Agency. Especially on defense. A while back the Giants got a great LBer in Kavika Mitchell, and the Cards got another LB named Monty Beisel.

Wilson8
02-01-2009, 09:56 PM
New England had Drew Bledsoe and then they had Tom Brady so they have not needed to draft QBs high or go after big free agent QBs.

Wilson8

I just noticed looking at the list of CBs...no Eric Warfield. Since this list is from the New England Patriot's official site, does this mean they do not want to recognize that free agent signing?

Hows our cap looking for Free Agents?

OnTheWarpath15
02-01-2009, 10:18 PM
Apparently someone missed Pioli's initial press conference where he said that the Patriots signed 21 Free Agents, but only gave out a combined $2.5M in guaranteed money.

In other words, the guys they signed were all Tier 3 guys and UDFA's.

Clark also said that we would be more active in FA, but not when it comes to Tier 1 guys - we're looking at Tier 2/3 type guys.

Don't expect a big name, or you're going to be disappointed.

That sounds good because they need to address several positions.

From - http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/numbers.asp - Jan. 23, 2009.

With the latest extension to the CBA, the 2009 salary cap is approximately $123,000,000 which represents a nice increase over last year's $116.7 M figure. (Note that the cap was "just" $85.5 M in 2005, the final season prior to the CBA's extension and $102 M in 2006 after the CBA extension.)
Projected 2009 NFL Salary Cap Space for Each Team

Rank Team $ Under the Cap
1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers $42000000
2 Arizona Cardinals $41000000
3 Denver Broncos $34000000
4 Kansas City Chiefs $33000000
5 Tennessee Titans $31000000
6 Miami Dolphins $28000000
7 Buffalo Bills $27000000
8 Detroit Lions $26000000
9 San Francisco 49ers $26000000
10 Houston Texans $25000000

Ya know we have had a great cap for a while now. I can really see us building 1-3yrs with younger players than spending a shit load of money one year to make a run.

If you examine the past drafting and free agent pattern of the New England Patriots, I would expect Scott Pioli to do what he does best in forming the team. He will mainly use the draft and add needed players through free agency. In the many name of signed free agents, you will not see very many big dollar free agents but he will go after players that he wants.

LB Adalius Thomas –
Five years, $35.04 million.
• Signing bonus: $12 million in 2007.
• Option bonus: $8 million payable in 2008, applied for cap reasons in equal $2 million increments in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
• Salaries: $900,000 in '07, $900,000 in '08, $1.9 million in '09, $4.9 million in '10 and $5.9 million in '11.
• Workout bonuses: $107,000 annually if he participates in the Patriots' offseason workout program in Foxboro.
• Cap numbers: In succession, beginning this year, $3.4 million, $5.4 million, $6.4 million, $9.4 million, $10.4 million

WR Dante Stallworth –
Six years, $33.1 million.
• Signing bonus: $1 million in 2007.
• Roster bonus: $1.6 million payable in 2007. $2 million in 2008.
• Option bonus: $6 million payable in 2008.
• Salaries: $700,000 in '07, $1,00,000 in '08.
• Workout bonuses: $300,000 in 2007 and $400,000 in 2008 if he participates in the Patriots' offseason workout program in Foxboro.
• Cap numbers: In succession, beginning this year, $3.6 million, $11 million in 2008.

They dropped Dante after 1 year.

I really hope we make a move for Bart Scott. Our primary needs are a RE, OLB, MLB, and of course C,RG,RT. I'm in favor of Sanchez with the first pick. Anyone know where we will find a RE? Suggs has made it clear he wants to stay in Baltimore, while Scott wants the money. I also think the line can be addressed via draft with the exception of 1 spot being filled through FA. Any thoughts?

On ESPN it say the Chiefs are reportedly interested in trading for Matt Cassell. I'm assuming this is just conjecture based on Pioli and KC's need for a QB. Can someone give us the story?
