cool, my first chance to see MU this year...

and as an editorial aside, Barnes is a good coach and a great recruiter but somehow his teams never seem to be as good as they should be...at least it looks that way from a distance....

I'm watching the end of the KSU vs Missouri womens game so i'm missing it. I'm actually anxiously awaiting Nebraska @ Colorado (mens). Don't know why, it seems more interesting to me than MU @Texas.

This year's class doesn't look to have it either. And it takes a year or so to develop.

So if we're lucky we finally get something going when Miguel Paul is a Sr.

Just seems to be a major major shortcoming in Anderson's performance here and unless he raids the JUCO ranks, there's just no way to address it in the near future.

If I'm a mid-major, I'd love to have the guy. He turns mediocre players into decent ones.

If I'm a major college program that intends to challenge for a conference title in a BCS school, he's an assistant coach, nothing more. He's not a good enough recruiter, he doesn't have a grasp of Xs and Os.

Wow. Just wow.

Mike Anderson bills it as such, it isn't.

It's 40 minutes of chase defense and choatic offense that looks pretty damn sweet if your jump shooters are on.

If they're not, you get drubbed by K-State.

OK, I'll buy that. I think KU actually plays rather slow compared to the Roy days. Back then we grabbed the ball out of the net on the defensive end and fired it downcourt. Now, Self tolerates the guards walking the ball upcourt.

DJ's left nut
02-04-2009, 09:51 PM
Okay, that HAS to be a foul on someone. I'll listen to arguments either way, but when an offensive player drives the lane, jumps in the air, smacks into the defender uner the net and they both go sprawling, that's either a block or a charge.

Then they call a hand-check.

Just bizarre.

DeezNutz
02-04-2009, 09:52 PM
Get the ****ing rebound

We don't box out around here, brah. It's not part of the 40 min. package.

DJ's left nut
02-04-2009, 09:54 PM
Ramsey plays way too soft.

He has a little bulk but won't box out, he has enough athleticism to finish, but won't dunk.

Someone needs to lock him in a room with his eyelids taped open and a running loop of big men kicking puppies.

P.S. Carroll is among the worst passers I've seen this year. That's 2 breakaways he's botched by having no idea where to put the basketball.

DeezNutz
02-04-2009, 09:54 PM
OK, I'll buy that. I think KU actually plays rather slow compared to the Roy days. Back then we grabbed the ball out of the net on the defensive end and fired it downcourt. Now, Self tolerates the guards walking the ball upcourt.

When Self was first hired I remember him being astounded by this statement.

His response, and I'm paraphrasing, obviously, "Grab the ball out of the net? Hold on. How about stopping them from scoring?"

I was watching tape-delay (had to wait for the wife to fall asleep on the couch to switch over).

Seemed like they were missing a lot of shots tonight that usually fall, not just freethrows.

Pittman's a monster! The way he held that ball in his hand looked like me when I'm holding one of those mini-balls.

Big big road win for MU tonight. Living out west and not really having made a point of watching the Tigers this year, this was the first full Mizzou game I have seen. They were very impressive in the second half taking the lead and then holding on after Texas went on a run and took the lead back. From what I saw this game it looks as though free throw shooting is a major issue as well as being weak inside. Great win and a major building block for the Tigers and Anderson.

Why do you say that? Even with dissapointing losses to K-State and Nebraska this season has still been a huge success IMO. I guess my expectations aren't that high based on what we are used to but I have been happy so far.

Because we should expect a team with marginal talent in a tough league to consistently play like they are the '90 UNLV team.

As a lifelong Mizzou fan - I've discovered that my bretheren typically fall into 2 categories:

1. Ardent fans who, while rabid in their support of the team and enjoy any perceived successes, are constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.

2. Ardent fans who, while rabid in their support of the team and enjoy any perceived successes, will consistently find something to piss and moan about.

Nebraska is one of those teams that you have to play a very good game when you go to Nebraska, if you don't you will get you butt handed to you.

K-State looks like they may be one of those teams also.

But if you want to be a great team you have to be able to beat the teams you should beat and MU should have beaten both of these teams.

Good win by the Tigers. It's nice to see them getting tough road wins. That's something they have really struggled with in the past. Now they really need to work on staying consistent. They seem to run off 4 or 5 solid games then lay an egg. Go MIZZOU!!

I'm now a believer in him as the coach that can turn this program around. I wasn't sold on his style, his coaching and his recruiting, but this season has been eye-opening. After last night's win, I'm sold.

A team doesn't have to go undefeated to be considered good. We probably have an RPI in the top 20 now and our Sagarin rating is 15. This team is good.

My God, what makes you think this team should even be a "great" team this year? Anderson inherited a program in ruins, he didn't have the players to run his system and Mizzou hasn't made an NCAA tourney in years. But fans should expect a great team this year? Please.

If we make the NCAA tourney this year, it's a success, period.

Beating the teams that you should be is a start to being a great team.

I am not sure if this team can be a great team, I think they are on the way to being a good team, but time will tell on whether they can be a great team or not.

Anderson has done a good job so far, the program was in ruins and now MU fans can be proud, with the exception of a couple of hiccups, of their team this year.

At this rate, making the NCAA tourney shouldn't be an issue. Winning the Big XII tourney would be a nice spring board though.

I agree.

I said when the season started that I'd need Anderson to make the Tourney before I would be satisfied with him as a coach next season. He'll get us there, so this season is a good one. I question if he'll be able to take the next step, but that's for another time.

If we get Farrakohn Hall and if Steve Moore develops, we may not be as weak inside next season as I thought. Moore, Ramsey, Bowers, Hall and DeWitt should be able to give us some inside presence. If we have Tiller, Taylor and English in a 3 guard system (6'3'', 6'4'' and 6'6'' respectively), that's pretty decent length from our backcourt. If they can just hassle the opposing guards and try to deny the easy entry passes they'll take a lot of pressure off some very young big-men. We'll struggle a little on offense, though. None of next year's bigs have the offensive skill of Lyons (Ramsey's the only one that's close, though Hall or DeWitt could develop) or the raw strength of Carroll (unless Moore really turns it on in the offseason).

It took a while for me to figure out how they won last night but it ultimately came down to our guards having possibly their best game of the year. With only 7 turnovers and some very good ball movement, they really stepped up their game. With as badly as we were being beaten underneath, we absolutely had to have that kind of performance from them.

In this league, you just have to finish in the top 4. This year with the league being a little weaker, maybe top 3 to assure the bid. It's not that hard to get there.
Huggins took an 11th place team from the previous season and got them there to 4th two years ago. Martin kept them there last season.
Winning on the road in league is always great and it's tough. It's the home losses that every team has to avoid. For every one you lose at home, you have to win two on the road.

Ever since I watched his first season here I was liking him as a coach. I was sooooo sick of Quin's lazy players and the fast tempo work ethic caught my attention quick. This year's team is making me think that a few more years of program building Anderson could have MU ranking along with the better teams in the nation.

Whoa whoa whoa............not so fast there.

If MU wants to be ranked anywhere near the top 15 next season, they sure as shit better hope they land Demarcus Cousins.

I dont think MU has enough talent to really be at that level. Sure as hell don't have a big game down low. And losing Carroll and Lyons is going to sting like the dickens considering there is no on to replace them.

Mike Davis isn't getting fired, so the Tigers won't be landing Cousins.

If Moore develops (i.e. loses 1/2 of his ass) and we get Hall, I think MU can fight for a top 25 position next year as well.

Quick thoughts on the whole thread:

Did Saul really admit to 1) watching women's hoops; 2) looking FORWARD to watching Colorado and Nebraska? The players' families weren't looking forward to watching that game.

It's amazing how much better Anderson's system looks with a roster full of player who have teh length, quickness, basketball IQ and play-hard-always mentality (Leo Lyons excepted on playing hard) to play his style, isn't it?

The future of the backcourt looks very strong. English has the shot and offensive skillset to be a go-to offensive player (needs to develop his handle better, but that will come). Tiller and Taylor are the best defensive backcourt tandem in the league. Denmon and Paul look like they're going to be good fits, too.

As far as the frontcourt... adding Hall to the recruiting class along with DeWitt would help a lot. The starting frontcourt next year of Ramsey and Bowers (who, by the way, has a very similar skillset to Lyons and is more advanced as a freshman than Leo was, too) should fit this style well. Would be nice to have Hall, DeWitt, Safford AND Moore as options off the bench. I think Steve Moore needs one more year before he's ready to log heavy minutes...
