Buying a new Air Conditioner

Just got the tax return, and am looking to replace the 20+ year old piece of crap that i currently have. any suggestions?

i could ask around here in town, but at CP i can get hundreds of both good and crappy opinions much quicker.

central. 1850 square foot. 1 story. 14 good double pain windows.my main concern is saving money on energy. less concerned with air quality, but it would be nice. oh yeah, its hot as sh*t here more often than its not.

must have been one helluva tax refund.

we had a trane installed at our old house.
got a carrier installed in the new house. was more expensive model, but is supposed to be very energy efficient.
had great luck w/both.

I had a connection two years ago with a buddy of mine who bought a huge central air unit at cost. Installation, fre-on (SP?), and the new unit for a 2,000 square foot house ran me 400 bucks and three elk steaks. Giggity!
