Yeah I think Aflac wanted to be the main sponsor, not sure if Office Depot would do the money or commit to a full schedule.

Newman having horrible luck this week. He was wrecked in the shoot out, then just a little bit ago, during final practice, he blew a tire, and tore up his car. To top it off his teammate Tony Stewart was behind him and couldn't avoid him. Now Ryan and Tony have pulled out their back up cars, they won't be able to put very many laps on them.

This will be Ryan's 3rd car this weekend.

Goodyear has puled a bunch of their tires, saying they had a bad batch. Looks like tire issues may go throughout the weekend.

They were showing tires from one of the runs this week - not sure if it was sunday's bud or the two shootouts thurs, can't remember. But I do remember them showing a dire that looked like a retreat that lost it's cap.

With all the problems they have had, and all the drivers that have publicly criticized them, I would have to think they are on thin ice. This is not how NASCAR wants to start the season.

Rule changes for this season,

Single file starts now start with 20 to go, not 10

The double red line on the wall for a restart has now turned into a restart zone, If you are not going by the second line, NASCAR will wave the green, and they can pass the leader.

Sealed engine rule for NWS.

The track is cooler so they get better traction. But IDK bout the density.

02-15-2009, 04:10 PM

The denser the air the more down force on the front end. More down force on the front end help keeps the car from creating drag, plus makes it more stable.

this is a superspeedway. The restrictor plates are used so the cars don't go airborne if they get in a wreck. they still go airborne -- but it keeps the car from flying over the fence and into the crowd--

mlyonsd
02-15-2009, 04:16 PM
Another question, if this is a superspeedway, why do they have restrictor plates on the cars?

So they don't kill themselves when their cars take off like airplanes.

Back in the day they raced at over 200mph on this track. Now the top is like 189.

Pooosies.

Bugeater
02-15-2009, 04:16 PM
Another question, if this is a superspeedway, why do they have restrictor plates on the cars?

Speeds were starting to get out of hand with the more aerodynamic cars back in the 80s. IIRC they were starting to hit around 220 mph.

kstater

So as in the opposite in airplanes, air under the vehicle is a bad thing?

Very, these cars rely on downforce, they don't want lift. When under speed, these cars have roughly 1/4 inch clearance, and on some tracks you'll frequently see them bottom out.

Restrictor Plates
One part of a NASCAR car engine that was implemented for safety reasons is now being pointed at as the cause for many of the multi-car accidents during races. Restrictor plates are used at NASCAR's super-speedways, including Daytona and Talladega, to slow cars down. The New Hampshire International Speedway was recently added to that short list of restrictor-plate tracks following the deaths of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin on that track within months of each other

Restrictor plates were implemented in 1988 following Bobby Allison's crash into a retaining fence at 210 mph (338 kph), which endangered hundreds of fans. Also in 1987, Bill Elliott set the track record by running a lap around the track at 213 mph (343 kph). Some believe that if restrictor plates weren't used, NASCAR cars could race on super-speedways at speeds in excess of 225 mph (362 kph) due to the improved aerodynamics of the cars over the past decade.

While NASCAR officials contend that restrictor plates are needed to prevent high-speed crashes like Allison's, many drivers complain that restrictor plates are the cause of multi-car accidents. Restrictor plates reduce speed by about 10 mph, leaving the field of more than 40 cars bunched tightly as they race around the track at 190 mph. If one of these cars crashes, it usually causes several other cars to crash along with it.

Very, these cars rely on downforce, they don't want lift. When under speed, these cars have roughly 1/4 inch clearance, and on some tracks you'll frequently see them bottom out.

Okay so one could look like a car as and upside down airfoil? Relative wind (speed in this case) drives the car down, like an airplane wing up...

Stick your hand out of your car window going about 60. Hold it level and then dip your hand down. You'll feel the down force. Then imagine doing it at 189mph.

Yup, and with the COT(the new car) there's even more downforce with the rear spoiler and front air dam(they call it a splitter).

oh ok. i'll help you to get addicted to nascar. before each race, i'll post what you need to know.

Some drivers love superspeedways and others hate them. restrictor plate tracks are known for “The big one” when referring to a huge crash that can take out 1/3 to 1/2 of the cars on the track. You know it's coming -- You just don't know when.

Kind of a double edge sword here. People at home want to see the full race and 200,000 people at the track are not wanting to be there till early a.m. trying to get out to catch a plane or whatever.

If they would of started at Noon like they use to it wouldn't be a problem. They also lose some ratings if it starts then because of the west coast. We all know what the networks prefer.

It's not just lately. I have been a fan since 1995. It's been going downhill since right after Dale Sr. died. The sport got too big for the dim bulbs that run the sport. It's a good 'ol boy mentality trying to run the NFL and MLB combined.

That's about the same time I started getting into it as well, and part of the problem is pretty much all of the drivers from that era are gone now, and I don't really care for most of the new ones. Now there's nothing NASCAR can do about that, but things like taking away a Darlington race for another one at boring-ass Fontana and ruining Bristol sure as hell aren't helping either.

Terrible decision on calling the race, I mean come ON.....and I also agree with the not starting the race earlier with the threat of rain...had to get in the pre-race activities...:shake::shake::rolleyes:

Well, my internet was down throughout the race at the bar. Nice that 2 drivers a lap down take out a bunch of good cars, and sorry not buying the whole, "just an accident excuse". He was frustrated and got blocked, then came back up into him. Could have been avoided, by both Jr. and Vickers. Maybe if Jr. would learn how to pit, he wouldn't be in that position, I mean come on, missing your pit box 4 times in one weekend.

Why the fuck they didn't start this race earlier is beyond me, but hey they got the concert in.......

Matt "the prick" pulls out he win, not even leading a full lap, WOW.

This is NASCARS biggest race of the year, they should have made every effort possible to finish it, even if it went into the late night.

Was surprised that Carl made it back to 18th from 30th on that last run, with a banged up car.

Nascar is really the one to blame. Even though, it happened in a split second, Jr had already a good run moving down the track before Vickers put a severe block on him. Vickers hit Jr first on the right front, forcing him below the yellow line. In essence, this is one of Nascar's most controversial rules. Once you're forced below the yellow line, you got to get up fast and "blend" in above the line.

If Vickers is going to block drivers, he better be sure he can clear him. When Vickers came down hard and made contact, Jr never lost control of his car. Too bad I can't say the same for Vickers.

You live by the block, you can die from the block. ... Sincerely, Dead Dale

NASCAR finally made restitution to Jack Roush for all the years they kept him out of the winner's circle, because he was not one of the "Good ol' boys."

Look I realize Vickers blocked him, that is why I said it could have been avoided by both drivers. If it was Bush that pulled this everyone would be screaming. Dale turned him, plain and simple. Whats BS is that NASCAR is not consistent in the penalties. In the Nationwide race a driver didn't do shit but Nascar handed him a 5 lap penilty (which is rediculous) but if they are going to hand that one out, Jr, more than deserved the same. We all know though they won't mess with the golden child to much.

Christ, all I heard about today regarding the race was Dale Jr incident, live I give a goddamn shit about that. No outrage about getting fucked out of the last 50 laps of the race whatsoever. Just Dale, Dale and more Dale. Fuck you NASCAR.

On the radio around here, fans called in and bitched their ass's off concerning the calling the race.

They were comparing it with other sports, saying other sports wouldn't have called it, especially at the biggest event of the sport.

Why did they take so long starting the race? Was the start rain-delayed and I missed the announcement? Had they started at 1pm ct like I saw the race announced last week, they might have been able to get the last 50 laps in before the rain came.

Again, it's not that they called it, it's that they wasted 2 hours with stupid shit like Digger cartoons and a Keith Urban concert instead of starting the damn thing early when they knew rain was a possibility. The race should be the most important thing, and it seemed like it was the least. Oh well, they got their money I guess.

EXACTLY. And no, it wasn't rain delayed.

I agree, even at that though, I think it should be finished, even if they have to run it the next day.

Here's a few pics I took from our seats during Saturday's race. Sorry if the quality isn't that great. I may be the last person still using 35mm.
