i hate the elbow foul call
not just this game ... but all of them
a player SHOULD have the ability to "clear out"
hell ... they used to coach that
now "it's ok to clear out with your elbows but if you're unlucky and hit somebody then the foul is on you"
WTF???

And about 60 seconds before that Reed popped him in the jaw with an elbow and was called for a foul. It was a very physical game, so frankly, I wouldn't be too upset with either team's players for being a little chippy.
It was a physical game, but Reed elbowed Clemente when trying to clear out (still wrong, but a foul with an actual purpose). Clemente, however, simply smacked Tyrel's head while not even going for the ball. A bit different, IMO.

I agree, but the subtle difference in my mind is if you hold your elbows out and turn, you should be given that space. But it looked like Reed aimed his elbow toward Clemente who was up on his toes. It's a judgment call of course, and I don't have a problem with it if they call it that way. They called a similar one on Cole in the Mizzou game, the difference being his elbows were out and the defender was practically chest to chest with him. He didn't raise the level of his elbow at all I don't think.

Just got home, so time to deliver my GAME THOUGHTS -
Like I previously said, KU would have the 2 best players on the floor, and it was evident, especially in the 2nd half. KU adjusted to our gameplan, and at that point there wasn't anything we could do except pray that our shots fell, which they didn't. Triangle and two owned us, and none of the adjustments were working. When your combination of "bigs" are Darren Kent, Luis Colon and Ron Anderson, there just isn't much you can do 8 feet away from the basket and within.
That being said, i'm not down on this team, the Cats still have a chance at dancing but they will need to finish strong. They played their game but they just don't match up well against teams with superior talent.

You know I have given Self a ton of grief for being a hack coach, but today he pushed all the right buttons. Down the stretch, he kept going to Aldrich and the Cats had no answer.
The T on Deni was big but it wasn't a difference maker. Hell KSU was within 2 with under 5 to play on three different occasions, but they never had the ball and a chance to take the lead because KU hit every FT down the stretch. 22-25 in the second half.
I look over at Pitt and realize how big it was they got DeJaun Blair. I would kill to have a brute PF on this team.

Ehh I wouldn't agree with that statement. There were questionable calls all game. Just went both ways. There are no refs worse than Big 12 officials. Football or basketball.
I really didn't see any obvious missed calls on Aldrich, but it is surprising he only had one foul. The story of this game was KU's shooting, and anything else is a distant second. 57% FG, 8-12 from 3, 27 of 35? KU won't sniff those numbers again this year, credit to them.
When someone boxes out the FT shooter by hitting him in the nuts, it wouldn't make me happy either. Sure, it's "boxing out", but it's one of those plays that's a bit of a cheap shot within the confines of the game. Anybody that's played knows this. Clemente obviously needs to do a better job of keeping his poise, and deserves some criticism. Of course leave it to this KU crew to frame the guy as one of the FBI's 10 most wanted.

Def a cheap shot by Reed.
It's obvious Reed was trying, but IMO it didn't look that hard. I've been boxed out way harder than that and I didn't play college ball.
A ref can't call that a foul and Clemente can't throw a punch for it. There are other ways to get back at guys for rough play, within the rules.

I agree with everything you say actually, but my simple point was that Clemente was somewhat provoked. Doesn't justify an immediate retaliation like that though. And it's not really about how "hard" he was boxed out. When you're shooting a free throw and concentrating on the rim, you aren't focused on a guy coming up to give you a cross check in the nuts. You're vulnerable. No big deal really....the game was played hard. Clemente has gotten an elbow to the jaw and a shot to the nuts....I guess he felt with 20 seconds left he needed to get his shot in at Reed.

I would like to respectfully disagree. Earlier in the game (I think, not really sure when this was), I believe it was Clemente (again, not 100% certain) shot 2 free throws, missed them both, got the rebound and scored. Typically, a shooter knows if the shot is on or not right after it leaves his hand.
Since he was able to snag that board and score in the same situation, I'd say he was ready. Moreover, since Clemente grabbed that earlier board, I'm sure self got in the Guards' face about boxing that motherfucker out. If Reed doesn't box out hard, his ass is on the bench.
Surely this isnt the first time he's been boxed out on a freethrow. I probably would have been thrown out for them fuckers hacking at my arms and me plowing my elbow into their face. I understand the emotion, but this justification is not appropriate IMO.
PLEASE NOTE: Don't constrew this as trash talk. There were less than straight up clean plays on both sides. My issue is just with the justification of him not being ready.

In their Bracketology from last week the group of last in/last out:
Last in:

BYU
Boston College
Wisconsin
Last out:
Georgetown
Providence
Cincinnati
USC
Based on those teams, I'd say they should be in... I saw part of Wisconsin/OSU and wasn't impressed at all with Wisconsin. Cincinnati has lost to every decent team they've played, while KSU has beaten Mizzou and Texas. Georgetown, seriously? They're like 3 games over .500 overall. :doh!:

I believe the Big XII is the 4th rated conference in the RPI. 4, maybe 5 bids.
OU, KU, Mizzou, Texas...then it's a fight between K-State and Nebraska for the possible 5th bid.
K-State has @Iowa State, @Missouri, vs Nebraska, @Oklahoma State, vs Colorado. If they can go 3-3 in that stretch they may have a shot. That would put them at 21-11, 9-7 in conference.
Nebraska has vs Colorado, @KU, vs A&M, @K-State, vs Iowa State, @Baylor. If they go 3-3, that's 18-11, and 8-8 in conference.
Texas has a bit tougher schedule. @A&M, vs OU, vs Tech, @OSU, vs Baylor, @KU. Again, 3-3, that's 20-10, 9-7 in conference.
I think Baylor, Oklahoma State and A&M would have to win out to make the tournament, which is highly doubtful. That leaves Nebraska @K-State a pivotal game for either team to make the dance. Who would have thought that at the beginning of the year...

Get in or not get in, I don't really mind too much. This team has overachieved, and is getting a huge influx of talent next year, and returning their entire roster except 1 player. I can't say the same about any other team in the North, except KU.
I said before the season that I would be happy with an NIT bid, and when we went 0-4 to start off the season, I would have been ecstatic with an invite to the prestigious "CBI" tournament. Never would I have thought at the beginning of the season, and especially at the end of that 0-4 start, that i'd be talking about the NCAA tournament. It's really a testament to how well Frank Martin has done w/ this team.

Great point about Clemente getting his own board earlier. That probably has a lot to do with Reed's strong box out. It doesn't change my comment about Clemente being surprised by that kind of contact as he's watching the ball toward the rim. It was a legal/fair play, don't get me wrong. I just know that when I've been boxed out hard after letting a free throw go, it pisses me off. Not enough to take a swipe at a guy, but unhappy nonetheless.

Martin has really surprised me as well. When he was first hired, I thought he was going to be a joke once Beasley and Walker left. But I see now that he's pretty good and he's got the fan base behind him.
Same here. May have to gobble some crow if this keeps up.

In their Bracketology from last week the group of last in/last out:
Last in:
KSU
:doh!:
Georgetown has beaten Memphis, UConn and Syracuse. But they have really fallen. Doubt they'll make it in, now.

I don't think even Texas will finish 9-7 in the conference. They aren't that good. From what I've seen these past few weeks, K-State is definitely the 4th best team.

I don't know. We're kind of a weird team. Streaky if you will. Fun as hell to watch, especially when the three's are raining in. But when you start 0-4, move to 6-4, there's a very good chance to streak to 8-8 or 7-9.

From Puerto Rico. Played at Miami. Suspended twice. Transferred. Sat out last season.

==========================================================
WHEN DENIS CLEMENTE was growing up in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, he always heard stories about a first cousin of his father's who had died before he was born. This cousin played baseball; Denny also played baseball. The cousin was fast; Denny was maybe even faster. And as Denny matured, excelling as an outfielder—the cousin's position—crowds in Bayamón buzzed. "Everyone talked about him," says Art (Pilin) Alvarez, his AAU coach, "because of Roberto, of course."
But no one in the family of Roberto Clemente, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Hall of Famer, could have foreseen where his supposed heir would be playing today: Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kans. Denis, 22, is stirring conversation again—as the new point guard at Kansas State. "I always liked basketball more," he says. "There's just more movement."
Movement has been the dominant motif of Clemente's career. The first time Alvarez spotted him, Denis was a skinny 15-year-old who had been clocked dribbling baseline to baseline in a breakneck 3.6 seconds. At the 2006 ACC tournament CBS analyst Billy Packer proclaimed that Clemente, then a Miami freshman, was "the fastest player in college basketball." Coach Frank Martin of Kansas State—where Clemente transferred after two seasons with the Hurricanes—says Clemente is "the fastest person I've ever seen with a ball in his hands."
By his own admission, though, Clemente's journey has been more of a steeplechase than a sprint. As a junior at Miami's Calusa Prep he outscored Tyler Hansbrough and Kevin Durant at a Nike AAU tournament. Calusa went 48--5 during Clemente's two seasons there, and the school retired his number. But in college he ran headlong into trouble. In his sophomore year he was suspended by the Hurricanes twice and finally dismissed in March 2007 for violating unspecified team rules. "I learned a lot from the experience," Clemente says. "If you want to play, you have to be more responsible."
He transferred to K-State to play for Martin, an old friend of Alvarez's. Forced by transfer rules to sit out last season, when the Wildcats made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 12 years, Clemente worked hard on the practice team and in the weight room, putting on 20 pounds of muscle—he's now 6'1" and 175—and learning from Wildcats stars Mike Beasley and Bill Walker. "I saw how hungry they were to get to the next level," Clemente says. "I wanted the same things."
Now that Beasley and Walker have left school early for the NBA, a smaller Wildcats offense will have to accelerate. Its engine will be Clemente, who has switched to number 21 in honor of his famous relative. "I'm going to run and run," the junior says. "I think we're going to be the fastest team in the Big 12." If he's right, the crowds in Manhattan will buzz just like the ones in Bayamón.

Denis Clemente is by far the largest piece of shit we have played against this year.

And be sure to include Morris' slap at Jamar Samuels as well.

Yeah, that was stupid. But just like Clemente's mess up, Morris was antagonized. Morris was called for something (forget) and was lazily holding the ball in his hands, ready to drop it and Samuels came up from behind and smacked it out. Not necessary but not foul. Just an instigation move. Like Reed's hard box out on Clemente.

No need to do that. KU already owns KSUck every way possible.

After the OSU and KU losses, a friend of mine who went to Nebraska said there was no way they could make it to 10 conference wins... but then they won 3 in a row, including Texas. @KSU is a Saturday night game, so hopefully it's on TV.
KSU should get 9, but there's a chance at 10... they basically have to win 2/3 against Nebraska, @OSU, and @MU.
Not really looking forward to the tournament though... they have KU slotted as a 4 seed right now, which I think is too high. They aren't a Sweet 16 team... right now, anyway. Not that I was expecting anything more than getting into the tournament..

Double dribble I believe.
It was a perfect move by JAMSAM. I'm sure Frank probably told the team that Queef Morris is fairly light in gray matter. But in fairness to 'Queef, he kept his head and Deni lost his. (and got caught)

i hope KSU continues their upward trends. Having KSU and MU being consistently competitive would be great fun each year.
