Jags cut RB Taylor in cap move

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have released running back Fred Taylor, the latest move in the team's makeover.

Taylor was scheduled to make about $6 million next season, so getting rid of the 11-year veteran was no surprise since he had clearly become the second option behind Maurice Jones-Drew.

The Jaguars might try to re-sign the 33-year-old back. But Taylor has made it clear he still believes he can be a starter in the NFL.

Taylor is 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 11,271 yards, 81 behind John Riggins. He had 556 yards on the ground last season, splitting time with Jones-Drew, and averaged a career-low 3.9 yards a carry behind an injury-riddled offensive line.

The Jaguars released veterans Jerry Porter and Drayton Florence last week.

Wow, that's big. Maybe now this pic of my kid and Maurice will be worth something. Taken last week at his flag football game.

That sucks. Fred is a class guy and a hell of a player. He still has some gas in the tank. On the right team, in the right situation, he can be a key contributor.

Sucks, but it's a reality of the business.
This is a guy who should be getting Hall-consideration in a few more years once he's hung it up.

Good guy. Hope he lands on his feet in a good situation somewhere and maybe gets a chance to win a ring.

Indeed, that is the cliffnotes of the one that is still coming though. The true one will not be here until LJ is gone and Fred buys a white horse in OP to ride in on though.

Oh, man I was hoping to get in there with a "Bring him in fo a look" or maybe a "See what he's got left in the tank". I can never be first in with that shit. I should start my own Joey Porter thread just to get that in there.

He had a decent career for a guy who could have been one of the best of all time if not for the injuries.

They weren't pumped up about Taylor's salary compared to his role, so I'd be surprised to see LJ there, but how sick could that be?

MOJO and LJ could form a pretty fierce duo...of course they'd have to slap that into Larry's face a thousand times before he understood "team", but if he did, that could be mean.

Actually, this is just the kinda cheap veteran player Pioli may go for. Get rid of LJ and ride him for 1 year when we draft in 2010.

In some circles Larry has been refered to as a "rich mans Lawrence Phillips".;)

Borderline Hall of Famer. I would take him over Edgerrin James.

Agreed. Shame that he had to endure some injuries, otherwise, his numbers would have been more respectable.

If he didn't miss several games with injuries, he could have been top 10 material, easily.

Edit: Rash of injuries caused him to miss 23 out of a potential 48 games from 1999 to 2001.

Living in Florida, I've watched the guy play more than a few times. Because of a certain ex, I have also hated the Jags for quite a while - but I've got to admit this...

That SOB (in his youth) was one of the most unstoppable forces I have ever seen. As some others have already noted, if he had not been so injury prone during the prime of his career, you could probably add another 1500-2000 yards to his totals. He was absolutely one of the best backs I've ever seen in the NFL.

I think I remember Jim Brown calling him the best back in the league.

This could help out KC. LJ hasn't been to healthy the last two years, and that's if the whole drama situation still plays out with him staying a Chief.

He'd be a great pickup for 5-10 carries a game. He could come in handy in the fourth-quarter. :-)

Eh, he got a bad rap early in his career for being injury prone but over the last 7 years he's only missed 11 games due to injury.
