Better to put them all in one place, than to have a new thread (or three) started every time a guy signs.

There's no way I can keep this thing updated and keep the mock draft running, all while handling schoolwork and life in general.

Plus, people are starting new threads anyway, so I'm really wasting my time.

If you want to see an updated list, try this link:

I agree but we need talent on this team and a young guy like Jason Brown would be a great pick up. We have so much cap room we won't even come close to using it all. Heck I bet we don't use half of it.

He was with the Bengals, but if Pioli thinks he fits the system, he'll grab him.

Pioli always has been good at taking other team's trash and making them useful.

Not saying that Ghiaciuc is the guy, but it will be a lot of guys like him, IMO.

True. I have a feeling like OTW says we will sign alot Tier 2-3 FA's. IIRC the first year Pioli\Belichick was in NE they signed 20 some FA's.

I could see that happening here because it is not like we don't have about that many holes on this team.

Really it goes back to what Dane has been saying. We have no depth. We got some guys who are a nice core but no depth. I mentioned Beisel as a guy, good speical teamer/back up and few people went nuts. Those are the type of guys we will be signing.

Help this noob out with something, please. Have teams been able to communicate with players/agents during this time? I thought they weren't, in which case I would assume the only announcements would be about visits being lined up...which is a little different from the NBA where contracts are fairly streamlined with little/no flexibility.

If deals are announced tonight, then there's little doubt in my mind there have been discussions.

Here's a brief update on a few players of interest, per Rotoworld.....none of this sounds like good news at all for us....

The Jets are reportedly LB Bart Scott's "first choice" if the Ravens fail to re-sign him by the start of free agency.
The interest is mutual. The Rams, Chiefs, Giants, and Cardinals were also said to be in the bidding, but the Jets can offer old pal Rex Ryan and a leadership role on defense. The Ravens are still believed to be in the hunt.

The St. Petersburg Times is getting "strong indications" of the Bucs' interest in free agent LB Jonathan Vilma.
The Saints want to re-sign Vilma as the centerpiece of Gregg Williams' new defense, but they can't seal the deal until the start of free agency without giving up their first round pick. The Bucs could swoop in and make him a key piece in their own rebuilding defense, but he would have to move to the weak side with Barrett Ruud established in the middle.

The Redskins reportedly have "significant interest" in free agent DL Chris Canty.
Canty is seeking a contract in the neighborhood of seven years, $50 million, so he'd be a slightly cheaper alternative to Albert Haynesworth. At this point, there's nary a high dollar free agent not linked to the Redskins.

"Word is" that the Lions have entered the Nate Washington sweepstakes and are expected to make a strong run at him once free agency starts.
They're vying with the Rams, Titans, Bucs, and Vikes. Either his agent is doing a great job of upping Washington's market or these teams are serious about giving him a starting job. The Steelers made no effort to keep him.

It's hard to separate the "breaking news" from the preconceived notions of the media. Everyone just assumes we're going to trade for Cassel. Everyone assumes Haynesworth to DC is a done deal. Other than the Hall signing it's really nothing more than posturing mixed with smoke and mirrors thrown out by agents to drum up more interest and panic for the services of their clients.

New Denver head coach Josh McDaniels must have thought running back was his team's most pressing free-agent need.

The Broncos have acquired two up two of them by agreeing to multiyear contracts with Correll Buckhalter (Philadelphia) and J.J. Arrington (Arizona) at the midnight opening of the signing period, FOXSports.com has learned. The deals will become official when both pass physical exams.

Buckhalter can be considered a frontrunner for a starting spot, while Arrington is likely to fill a niche as a third-down specialist and kickoff returner.

A backup behind Brian Westbrook for most of his eight seasons in Philadelphia, the 30-year-old Buckhalter has battled back from knee injuries that forced him to miss the 2002, 2004 and 2005 campaigns. Buckhalter started two games in 2008 and finished the season with 369 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 76 attempts. He also is an effective receiver coming out of the backfield.

Arrington never fulfilled the expectations that came with being Arizona's second-round draft pick in 2005. But he did start three games for the 2008 Cardinals team that reached Super Bowl XLIII. Arrington tallied 432 combined yards from scrimmage (rushing and receiving) and averaged 25.6 yards on kickoff returns with one touchdown.

Denver finished last season with seven running backs on injured reserve.

If StL signs him that definitely helps our chances of drafting one. They pick right ahead of us in the 2nd and are getting a center one way or the other this offseason.

We actually pick right ahead of them in the 2nd. We swap the 2nd and 3rd picks every round I believe and we are reported as having the 34th pick which would be the 2nd pick in the 2nd round.

That's the current market. If you want to play the game you have to pay. So far Clark Hunt (and the late Lamar Hunt R.I.P) has proven to be too cheap to spend what it takes to build a winning franchise as is evident by our poor performance for most of this decade and the article on arrowhead pride showing us as having spent the 2nd least of any team on payroll this decade.

It looks like we have to spend $37 million just to reach the salary cap minimum. How exactly would you propose we reach that?

And an interior lineman is looking to be more and more important with Brian Waters now saying he wants out. Regardless of where Waters is next season he is getting older and our interior linemen absolutely suck. Signing a guard/center also fills one need and allows us to concentrate on other areas in the draft.

According to ESPN and PFT
Well, Lance Zierlein was right. (Peter King, too.)

Multiple members of the media are reporting that defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins.

The news comes from both Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean and Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

It’s a seven-year, $100-million deal with an incredible $41 million in guaranteed money.

The maximum value of the package is $115 million.

As we’ve previously said, the fact that the Titans and the Lions weren’t major players in the pursuit of Haynesworth tells us all we need to know; both teams have decided that Haynesworth isn’t worth the money.

Otherwise, the team with which Haynesworth spent seven seasons or his former defensive coordinator (who now is the head coach in Detroit) would have stepped up to the plate.

But maybe Haynesworth won’t go soft now that he no longer has to worry about money. Maybe, as he recently said, he’ll be motivated to prove the naysayers wrong.

And maybe he won’t loose his cool and step on a guy’s unhelmeted head.

And maybe he won’t leave practice and come back with a pipe. (Not a pipe for smoking crack, but a pipe for cracking skulls.)

And maybe he’ll learn how to obey all posted speed limits and not cause accidents that require 25-year-old kids to get hip replacements.

And maybe he’ll learn how to fly, without a plane.

And maybe the Redskins finally will learn that this isn’t the way to build a championship football team.

Jaguars reach a deal with Meester

February 27, 2009 12:40 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars may want Brad Meester to be their starting center, or they may ask him to help pave the way for a youngster and turn things over while becoming a quality backup.

Either way, they expect he will continue to be a good locker room guy, something that's more of a premium in Gene Smith's first year as general manager.

According to John Clayton, the unrestricted free agent has agreed to a four-year, $10 million deal to stay in Jacksonville.

That's two deals for centers in the AFC South in two days -- Jeff Saturday re-signed with Indianapolis on Friday. The details of his three-year deal are being kept tightly under wraps, but it's a good bit more than Meester got.

I love the Lions:

T.J. Houshmanzadeh is reportedly "at the top" of the Lions' wish list to fill their hole at No. 2 receiver.

A rock-solid possession threat like Housh working underneath opposite Calvin Johnson would give the Lions a dangerous receiver corps, but it's their defense that needs the most work.

But maybe not as much as the fucking Redskins:

With cornerback DeAngelo Hall re-signed to a huge deal (six year, $54 million, with $22.5 million guaranteed) and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth inked to a monster contract (seven years, $100 million, with $41 million guaranteed), the Redskins appear to be slamming on the brakes as to any other free agents.

Albert Breer noted earlier that a visit from Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty has been canceled. Other visits might be on ice for now, too.

Executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato addressed the situation earlier in the day on ESPN.

"We are running out of money," Cerrato said. "So we will be very selective in what we do from here on out."

Free-agency update: Denver staying busy

February 27, 2009 1:53 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The first hours of free agency are cranking hot and heavy. But the AFC West has been fairly quiet.

Most of the news is coming out of Denver where the Broncos are looking to add new pieces to the puzzle -- not major pieces here, more like complementary pieces.

Receiver Jabar Gaffney is visiting Denver. He played for new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels in New England. He would be a fourth receiver behind Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley.

The team is also hosting running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington, who would both will be role players. Miami safety Renaldo Hill is also visiting. All of these players could sign with Denver soon. Denver needs safety help and the steady Hill would be a good start.

Meanwhile, in San Diego, there are rumblings the Chargers may bring back Drayton Florence. He went to Jacksonville as a free agent last season but he was recently cut. Florence has already visited Buffalo. He'd be a role player in San Diego.

There was some talk that Kansas City could get involved with linebacker Bart Scott but he has already agreed to terms with the Jets. The Chiefs, as they have been in every aspect of their operations this offseason, have been quiet in the early hours of free agency despite having more than $50 million in salary-cap room.

Here's a name to keep an eye on in Denver: Marques Douglas. The defensive end was just cut by Baltimore. He played for new Denver defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in both Baltimore and San Francisco. The Broncos have a need for a player such as Douglas. This could be a perfect fit. Nolan is also trying to get defensive tackle Ronnie Fields, who played for him in San Francisco.

Signing players who are familiar with Nolan's system will be important as Denver transitions to becoming a 3-4 defense.

Broncos add WR Gaffney, S Hill

Posted: February 27th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Denver Broncos, Jabar Gaffney, Josh McDaniels, Renaldo Hill

When Denver wanted reinforcements. It turned to the AFC East Division that produced Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.

Denver signed former Patriots wide receiver Jabar Gaffney to a four-year, $10 million deal that includes $3 million guaranteed. Former Miami safety Renaldo Hill signed a matching four-year, $10 million deal that includes $3 million guaranteed. Now Denver has two more players that McDaniels knows well.

Broncos very active in the first day of free agency this year. I would imagine that signing Hill decreases the likelihood they sign Dawkins. Who knows though, Bowlin is doling out the cash right now.

Then what do you do after "one more year with Thigpen"??? You really think next year's QB class is better than what's available now?

:doh!:

dont know if its been posted but there are rumors that bart scott hasnt signed his deal and may be trying to go back to the ravens due to some wording in his contract. anyone heard this?

If my understanding is correct, Bart Scott originally agreed to a 5 yr/$40 million contract with the Jets, choosing them over Baltimore. However, soon after, he had a change of heart and decided to give Baltimore the opportunity to match his offer, which they did, offering up $42 million. Then the Jets upped their offer to $48 million which Bart Scott accepted. I haven't heard anything else, but I'm thinking he probably wouldn't back out of a verbal agreement a second time.

Nicely played by Scott, getting the two teams into a bidding war for him. Sounds like he picked up 20% more pay.

Yes, we did actually, about 3-4 years ago. But that was for his second contract and he's pushing 30 now and looking for his third.

Not sure we're really in the market for a DT/NT type. If we go to a 3-4, we've already got three or four guys in line for the NT spot. Two of them, Tank Tyler and Glenn Dorsey are young players that we probably don't want to block in terms of their progress. Unless of course we plan to move them to the outside or the new front office/coaching regime isn't happy with them. We also have Boone and Edwards in the mix but with two young players already, we might not be placing too much of an emphaisis on finding a DT - at least in free agency.

Just in case we are though, I'm thinking Rocky Bernard and Jovan Haye might be amongst the best ones remaining. Haye in particular might be an interesting player to consider. He had a nice 2007 season w/ 6 sacks but was injured in 2008.

Chris Canty officially signed with the Giants per Rotoworld.

------------

Giants signed DL Chris Canty to an undisclosed contract.
An already loaded defensive line gets better, and a lot bigger. Canty gives New York the option of showing more 3-4 looks to disguise blitzes. The Giants may also ask him to bulk up and play tackle at a John Henderson-like position. At 6'7/304, he can likely afford to carry more weight. Canty isn't a dominant pass rusher, but commands attention and can bat down passes with his long arms. The Giants will keep their linemen fresh in a heavy rotation.

No, but life has gotten in the way, and it's not worth my time to keep this going when people are going to start a new thread every time a big name guy is signed. Defeats the purpose.

The link I provided does a good job of updating the signings.

Sorry to everyone, and mods, you can un-sticky this if you like.

I read an article saying T.J. Housh would decide by tonight. I'd have to put the Giants in the Super Bowl if they sign him.

Olshansky being pursued by the Packers.

I was kinda hoping we'd go after him.
He'll come cheaper than Canty.
