If Mizzou does like normal, Cornell will think they can get the W in the first half only to be blown up in the second half.

If Cornell gets up by 30 CBS will stay glued because of the potential upset. If MU gets much of a lead at all CBS will switch games.

Do you think Mizzou's "40minutes of hell" will be very effective? These commercial breaks are LONG, giving Cornell a lot of rest. Does Carroll always just hang out on the perimeter taking up space?

Does Carroll always just hang out on the perimeter taking up space? That's pretty much how I remember the 2006 tournament going, when Memphis was ridiculously deep and relied more on wearing people down rather than just plain icing them. Depth is still important, but there are just too many long breaks to outright break teams' backs and make them humble.

Guys, here's how TV timeouts work.

After every four minutes of game play, at the next stoppage, there is a TV timeout. It doesn't matter if it's non-con or the tournament, the same rule applies.

So, if a team calls a TO at 8:01, and then they get fouled at 7:56, you'll have two stoppages. Thems the breaks.

The issue with CBS is that they'll find any reason for a commercial... not just official timeouts, but while ESPN talks basketball during 30 second timeouts, CBS will show one commercial and come back. Other channels will even stick around during full timeouts, but CBS would never do that.

CBS kinda has NFL and CBB fans by the balls... well, those who don't have DVRs or want to watch games live, anyway. Watching the KU game now... glad they took care of business, and it looks like Mizzou will, too.

If you want to get technical, it's officially called "electronic-media timout". I was looking to see whether the tourney TO's are longer. The rule book has regulations regarding the timeout(mainly games with them the length of team timeouts differ from games without), but it refers to the media agreement for the length of the timeouts. Somehow I don't think I'll get my hands on the media agreement between NCAA and CBS.

Yep, I live in Milwaukee (home of Marquette) and they haven't been the same since James went down. They lost like 5 games in a row or something. Not to say they couldn't put it all together in time for Mizzou because they DO have some quality talent. It's just that once he went down, they immediately went into a funk that I'm not sure they've completely pulled out of.

MU beat Cornell. Their players are there for academics and show up to play B-Ball if they think they can. Cornell is prohibited from offering athletic scholarships and it shows.

Shit, guess I better put the champagne back on ice.

Please, like any of us didn't fully expect MU to bash Cornell. Don't go getting all high and mighty. Besides, it's not like we were playing Davidson to get to the Final 4 or anything...

Dammit I hate beakers.

Glad I didn't watch it live, or else I probably would have been a nervous wreck... NDS's last lead was 17-16, but they just hang around. I believe Kansas' biggest lead was the final score (led by 9 at halftime).

They pushed it out to 11 early in the second half, but I get your point. It was definitely a nail-biter.

Well, it's one indicator of one's overall intellectual capacity, so it's interesting information. It also matters that to get accepted to MU, you have to have more going for you than only a pulse.

You're up against a no-win argument because you're working with anecdotal evidence; whereas some have statistical facts and information to back up their claims.

WICHITA - Bruce McKinney, who for more than 35 years collected magazines, pamphlets and underground newsletters on alternative lifestyles, has donated his collection to the Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas.

Library officials say the collection, documenting the history of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals in the Midwest, gives insight into the experiences of the gays in the Midwest.

"This addition could potentially put us on the map for GLBT materials in the Midwest," said Tami Albin, undergraduate instruction and outreach librarian at KU.

Sherry Williams, Spencer Research Library curator, said the library's Kansas Collection covers Kansas history from statehood to present time.

McKinney's collection of more than 160 boxes strengthens the holdings the library already maintains, Williams said.

"It is also one of the largest gifts of its kind we've ever received," she said. "Bruce has really done a lot for researchers by handing this over to our university."

McKinney, of Wichita, chose the library because of Lawrence's history. The town was the first in Kansas to have a gay organization.

McKinney's collection is currently in storage at KU until cataloging is complete.

Teams? As in plural?

kansas has one good team. Singular. Men's basketball. It is mediocre at football and horrible at everything else.

And of course you have more UMR engineers at your shop than Mizzou grads... the best and brightest of MO's in-state kids interested in that field go to UMR. The Columbia campus offers the degree program, but it is not a strong focus (as UMR is part of the same system and it would be stupid to have two campuses in the same system competing against each other).

There’s more than one way to win for Tigers

JOE POSNANSKI
KC STAR

BOISE, Idaho | Everyone has a theory about how a college basketball team wins in March. Some say that you need great guard play. Some insist that you need senior leadership. Some say that it comes down to teams that rebound the basketball or teams that play great defense or teams that get hot at the right time or teams that have several scoring options. And so on.

The truth is, there isn’t one secret way to win in March, or any other time. Take Missouri’s convincing 78-59 victory over Cornell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. What was the key to the game? Who knows? Even after it was over, no two people seemed to agree how the Tigers did it.

“I thought our pressure defense was the difference in the game,” Missouri coach Mike Anderson said. “I really, really did.”

“I thought we handled (the pressure defense) pretty well,” Cornell forward Ryan Wittman said. “Like Coach said, we only had nine turnovers.”

“It seemed like we took their legs from them in the second half,” said Leo Lyons, Missouri’s star of the day.

“It’s hard to get tired in an NCAA game — these timeouts are 3 minutes long … I didn’t sense fatigue at all,” Cornell coach Steve Donahue said.

“I think that our speed got them out of their comfort zone,” Missouri guard J.T. Tiller said.

“A game like this, where we felt like we could have won if we played better, it’s definitely disappointing,” Cornell forward Alex Tyler said.

There you go. And remember: This was after the game. It just shows you that basketball is too involved a game to be reduced to one thing, one story line, one distinct way to win. And that’s what might make this Missouri team dangerous in this tournament. Because the Tigers don’t win any one way. They don’t have one strategy. They don’t need one thing to go right.

Give you an example: Whenever basketball people talk about Missouri, what do they usually talk about? Sure: That full-court pressure defense. Forty minutes of hell. That was all anyone talked about Thursday as all the pregame analysis was going on. Donahue talked about how he had his offense practice against seven defenders to prepare for the Missouri challenge.

Well, all the evidence suggests that Missouri’s defense had almost no effect on Friday’s game. Cornell’s players seemed to be relaxed against it. Cornell turned the ball over only nine times, the fewest turnovers Missouri has forced all season. Cornell had a lot of open shots.

Still, Anderson insisted it was that defense that made the difference, going so far as to make this rather odd statement: “They only had three turnovers at halftime, so that played right into our hands because they’re more concerned about taking care of the ball than they are, maybe, trying to score.”

This theory that not forcing turnovers is a good thing is definitely novel, but maybe the Tigers really won because their offense was so efficient, especially in the second half, when they shot 57 percent. Maybe the Tigers won because Leo Lyons was unstoppable — he scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and at times seemed to be playing basketball against his little brother. He would just throw the ball against the glass, grab the rebound, put it up against the glass again, grab another rebound, until finally he grew tired of the little game and he just scored.

Maybe they won because DeMarre Carroll is one of the most versatile players in college basketball and he had his usual statistical gumbo (13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, one three-pointer, one blocked shot). Maybe the Tigers won because their guards are just so solid and unselfish; The Tigers turned the ball over only four times, a Missouri NCAA Tournament record. And they had 19 assists on 28 baskets, a fabulous ratio.

“To me, the underrated thing with Mike’s team is their offense,” Donahue said. “They don’t turn the ball over. They share the ball. No one does anything out of the ordinary, where you say, ‘Wow, what did the guy do there? Why did he do that?’ There is none of that.”

Missouri is just so solid. That’s what was so apparent on Friday. You can tell only so much in these first-round games, after all; Missouri is much more talented than Cornell, but we all know that there are upsets in the first round, there are near upsets, and the Tigers were never in any danger at all.

They played lazy offense at times, and they did not shoot well in the first half, and they did not create the sort of havoc they would have liked with their defense. But they still methodically took apart Cornell and left no doubts.

“We’re the ultimate team,” Anderson said after it ended, and he was emphasizing the word “team.” That seems right. The Tigers have three seniors in their starting lineup, they have excellent guards, they have a deep bench, they have different stars on different nights, they have an identity they play ferocious defense, and they seem to be peaking at the right time. They seem to have all the things a college basketball team wants to have in March.

Does that mean it will be a long March? Nobody really knows. And that’s what makes it fun.
