New tech could make consoles obsolete
OnLive promises on-demand, streaming games

What if you could stream top-end games to your TV, just like a Youtube video that you can control? You'd never need to buy a console again.

That's the future envisaged by Palo Alto startup OnLive, which plans to launch a groundbreaking gaming service this winter. OnLive will supply players with a small set-top box, not much bigger than a Nintendo DS, which will plug into your TV and your home broadband connection. From there, you can start playing games just like those on the Xbox 360, PS3 or PC -- but with no install time, no waiting for downloads, and no need for big, noisy, expensive consoles cluttering up your living room. OnLive's service can be continually upgraded, too, so you'll never be stuck with obsolete hardware again.

Skeptical? So were we, until we actually sat down and played with an OnLive box last week. Even a blisteringly fast racer like Burnout Paradise was totally playable over the service, and top-spec shooter Crysis: Warhead -- which normally requires an expensive gaming PC -- ran excellently too. It's all rolled together with a slick interface that requires just a few button-presses to get playing.

OnLive also includes some features you might associate more with your DVR than with a gaming console, including a Replay feature that lets you save the last ten seconds of your gameplay, and send it to your friends.

PC gamers aren't left out, either: OnLive's service can be accessed with a browser plugin from either Mac or PC platforms, works identically to the TV version, and has hardware requirements so low you'll be able, the company boasts, to play the most advanced of games on a $300 netbook.

OnLive has already signed deals with an impressive range of partners -- including EA, Take-Two, and Ubisoft -- and promises to have an up-to-the-minute selection of games when the service launches. Along with Burnout and Crysis, we spotted Grand Theft Auto IV, LEGO Batman, and Mirror's Edge among the games on offer, although the lineup will likely change before the service launches.

There's a catch, though. Being an online, streaming service, OnLive is only going to be as good as your Internet connection. High-definition resolutions will require a higher-end broadband connection, and if your service is prone to drop out unexpectedly, you're probably going to wind up frustrated. Even if it works, all that streaming video's going to add up over the months, and heavy users might find themselves the receipient of some unwelcome attention from their ISPs. Modem users, needless to say, need not apply.

OnLive won't talk price, other than to say that they'll be competitive with subscription services like Xbox Live. The box itself is simple and cheap to make, they told us, and it's easy to imagine it being thrown in with subscriptions -- rather like a cable or satellite TV set-top box. Games will most likely be available to rent or buy, and with free demos that don't need to be downloaded.

I meant none either, I just saw it on yahoo and thought this would be a great idea if it could be implemented effectively. Kinda brought me back to in the mid 90's when my cable company offered the sega channel.

Ahhh the Sega channel. I remember when I thought that technology couldn't get any better than that. God I was naive.

I still don't think this has much chance at all right now. But they've said they hope to be up and running by the end of the year.

Looks like they currently have 16 playable games. And all but a couple are crap.

I think this blurb from wiki sums up the issues they're going to have....

Matt Peckham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Peckham) from PC World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_World) stated that it might be technically difficult to transfer the amount of data that a high definition game would require; later on he mentioned that OnLive would need a "deterministic broadband". That is "a guaranteed, non-shared, uninterruptible speed", but "broadband isn't there yet, nor are ISPs willing to offer performance guarantees". He also mentioned concerns about the "mod community" being unable to create and offer mods since all the game data will be stored on the OnLive servers; as well as the fact that any games bought on OnLive are not actually owned by the user. If OnLive were to go under, all the user's games would also disappear with it. Currently, no widespread trial has been made to test the service so it is unclear whether it would work once live.[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnLive#cite_note-19)[21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnLive#cite_note-20)
<sup id="cite_ref-20" class="reference">
Cevat Yerli, the CEO of Crytek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crytek), had researched a method for streaming games but concluded that Crytek's approach would not be viable until 2013 "at earliest". Yerli made it clear Crytek was not directly involved with the OnLive service, and Yerli had no personal experience using the service. Rather, Electronic Arts, the publisher of Crytek's Crysis Warhead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crysis_Warhead), had partnered with OnLive and had tested and endorsed the OnLive technology. Yerli stated, "I want to see it myself. I don't want to say it's either 'top or flop'. I hope it works for them because it could improve gamers' lives. The technology of video-based rendering is not actually a very new concept but they do some things that others didn't do before so it will be interesting to see."[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnLive#cite_note-21)

Just got my invitation. Unfortunately it can't be used over a wifi connection at all and you must have a dual core processor or better.

That leaves only my laptop as a candidate to play Onlive and I don't use my laptop for gaming and don't want to run a wire to it just for this.

The prices for OnLive are ridiculous.

007
06-23-2010, 05:58 PM
agreed. Might as well just go to the video store at those prices. Also, Onlive requires a 5mbps connection to even work so it kind of leaves out all those people that "can't afford a console" for this service.

Another problem with this service.

It doesn't recognize game controllers. You have to use the keyboard and mouse.

that doesn't work well on a laptop.

I noticed "World of Goo" is one of the titles for 9.99.

If you don't have a computer that can run World of Goo, odds are you don't have a computer that can run OnLive.

These guys are fucked.

Its the stupidest piece of shit ever created.

LMAO

the other thing with buying games, you can only play it until they remove it from the servers. AFter that you wasted your money.

I wouldn't call it dumb but I would say there is no way I would pay a monthly fee for it just so I have the rights to RENT a game.

I entered within a two week period and they "selected" me. Though I honestly think anyone who signed up got it. You might check their blog, it may still be going on.

So gamefly is out of the question for you? Or you just don't like renting something that isn't physical? ala Netflix.

I like the idea of ONlive but they need to offer something more to people other than just 30 minute demos for the monthly price they will charge.

Well, yeah, if they're only offering 30 minute demos, they will fail hard core. I'm going to wait a couple days before installing and logging in but hopefully it's like Steam on Steroids.

I actually thought of their business model and idea back when PS2 just came out. Shoulda patented it. Unlike Buck, I think it's a brilliant idea.

I really like the idea of their service but they need to put some games out there that can be played free rather than rented so people feel like they are at least getting something for their money. There are at least 3 games on there that are simple PC games that have no business having a rental fee. Those are the types of games that should be free.
