Interesting. Apparently, you play as the prototype Big Daddy; the very first one created. That agile thing running around in the 1st half of the clip is a (the?) Big Sister.

I wasn't interested in this much at all, seeing as the developer for the sequel is different than the developer who made the 1st, super-fantastic, title in the franchise. This clip piqued my interest, though.

While its different developers i believe the producer of the first one has alot of input on the 2nd one. Think his name is Ken irvine or something like that.

I haven't finished the first one yet. I lent it out to a friend and just got it back. But I rarely buy games when they first come out, so I'll be waiting for the sequel to drop in price a little before picking it up anyway. I just got my 360 last fall, so my backlog of good and cheap games is rather large.

Bioshock was a masterpiece. There never was and probably never will be an FPS with just the right amount of RPG elements in it like Bioshock had.

Also, Bioshock's point was never to have scary (jump out of your seat) moments. That's what DOOM III did. You knew where the enemy was in Bioshock before you ever saw them, they never just spawned in the dark corner next to you.

Except for that one scripted part in the Pavillion. That nearly gave me a coronary.

That's not necessarily true - every now and then you'd turn around and one of the crazy fuckers would be standing right there ready to strike. Creeped me out playing in a dark room in the middle of the night.

Well I never have played the first one but had heard so many good things about it. So now that the second one is out and I'm looking to buy a new PS3 game or two (don't have many since Xbox just died bout 3 weeks ago and I finally made the switch to Sony) my question is should I go ahead and pick this one up or go with the first one? How lost will I be if I start with the second one?

Pick up the first one.

That's almost what I'm thinking at this point. It would be cheaper and by the time I beat it there could possibly be a price drop in Bioshock 2. I'll wait a day or so just to see what frazod advises me to do.

There's nothing to advise, you need to play Bioshock. It's as simple as that. The game is like 15 hours long or so, so it'll take you a week to beat it if you play it 2 hours a day.

I loved watching my son play it....so I was looking forward to this and so was he.

I went to Blockbuster first thing this AM (when I was able to get dug out from the snow) and picked it up for him. He was psyched to play this all day.....i brought it home with me after work...gave it to him and he disappeared into his basement dungeon.

He came up an hour later....he had the most disappointed look on his face...

He said he hated it....so we went and played Left 4 Dead 2 on the tougest level.

I'm about 5 hours into it or so and I'm really enjoying it. Obviously not quite same experience as the first, but it's still a darn good game. The multiplayer is a bit iffy, but that's not why most people are playing the game anyway.

Same here (other than the multiplayer, which I don't bother with). It seems a bit faster paced than the original and also lacks some of the dark, atmospheric creepiness, but is still loads of fun.

I picked it up but decided to finish Bioshock 1 first. pLayed at night in the dark with headphones. I'm only at the Dandy Dental part (telekenesis). I am frustrated because I am not that awesome at games where you have to cycle through menus with four separate triggers to get to guns /things you need. I get panichands. I think it's just getting the COD and MAG button schemes out of my head though. I'm gonna get the game guide. Heavy Rain is almost here so that's gonna be a couple of weeks when it drops. I want to finish this game first but it's becoming like a job. Heh.

Frazod

One problem I have with the game (and granted, I'm not one of the BB's videogame kung fu/insanity level masters like KEG) is that when I get dogpiled, which happens frequently in this game, it's annoying to switch between weapons while you're getting pounded on from four different directions. I think I might actually hook my Xbox controller to my computer and see if that works a little better for me - this may be one of those rare games when the hand held controller is better than the mouse/keyboard combo.

Beat the game. I didn't rush through it and it was still fairly short (about 10 hours or so). The story was nowhere near as good as the first one (which was one of the better storytelling experiences in gaming history), the graphics weren't an improvement at all over the first, and the multiplayer was just OK.

Don't get me wrong, it was still a damn good game and better than 90% of the crap that's put out there, but it was just a disappointment when compared to the first. If you're thinking about buying it, rent it first.

I paid for it with a gift card, so it's all good.

But you're right, it's no where near as cool as the original. The fact that I'm not motivated to play it nonstop speaks to that.

I just finished the first one literally about 20 minutes ago. That's one of the best games I've played in a long time. Turned off all the lights so I couldn't see anything else around me and really got immersed into the game. Nice balance of creepy, atmospheric and FPS.

There's a couple jump in your chair moments like when you approach the guys you think are dead and they're just sleeping. I really worked the 'hacking' angle to help me win and it was worth it.

That's going to be a tough act to follow.

This one is more of a commentary on socialism vs. capitalism. It's not nearly as moving or thought-provoking as the first. The ethical choices you make do affect the end game, and apparently there are 6 different possible endings depending on your decisions in the game.

So... I just got through the Siren Alley level and I'm considering just quitting altogether because I'm so fucking bored. This game, while sufficient on a technical level (by that I don't mean technology but technicality), has lots of flaws. The character motivations aren't there, the level design and gameplay is derivative, the levels don't feel like a natural progression through a story but instead feel like a game artificially extending itself.

Worst of all the political content blows. So far its setting up authoritarian collectivism as the subject of discussion. Except there isn't a discussion and, duh, of course authoritarian collectivism is bad, every WW2 video game is built on that notion. Nobody sensible is desirous of authoritarian collectivism. What made the political content of the first Bioshock so effective is that plenty of sensible people are desirous of libertarianism/objectivism. If the game was commenting on less-overtly-deplorable forms of collectivism then the game would be better, more nuanced.

From what I've played so far, the sequel is actively making the first game look worse by retconning all of its arguments.

Bioshock was great, haven't got B2 yet since I'm patient and cheap and will wait til games become 'reasonably priced'. But I'd say the game would be much easier to play, like all FPS shooters, on a PC with a mouse from having tried it on a friends PC. Why PC gamers insist they're 'superior' I'll never know.
