I got my hands on an unmastered demo of This Will Destroy You's upcoming album 'Tunnel Blanket'.

it's pretty much the greatest thing I have ever heard in my entire life. If you're a fan of TWDY or post-rock in general, prepare yourself for a major wtf? this is not post rock. and this doesn't resemble Young Mountain or their eponymous album in the slightest. it's kind of like Stars of The Lid meets Sunn O))). very sprawling and very droney, but nothing to emo or obvious. I call it 'doom-gaze'. like shoegaze/sludge.

anyway, the greatest thing ever.

anyway, I'm leaving for SXSW in an hour or so, I could list the 873 bands that are on 'next play' but yea....probably not.

My highlights include This Will Destroy You, My Education, Butterfly Explosion(really gay name, but they are a fantastic band) Olof Arnalds, Caspian, Gifts From Enola, Junius, & Efterklang. I might try to see Blackmilk tonight.

I'm buying it for sure. It gets really wacky around track 7 I think with a horn section and some weird classic rock riffs. Very cool, eclectic music with lots of changes and movements in it. That's the kind of stuff I dig.

The more you listen to it the better it gets. It's a departure from their first album (which was one of the better albums of the decade), but I think it's for the better. I can't stop listening to it.

You can definitely hear the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd influence, as well as some Beach Boys and the obvious Flaming Lips influences. And is that a jazz flute?

Deftones eponymous album is fabulous. It took awhile to grow on me but I love it.

SNW was mostly garbage with a few gems. Diamond Eyes is pretty much the tits. Prince could have been a track on White Pony. It sounds like RX Queen part II.

It's off of Omar Rodriguez Lopez's Xenophanes. Omar is the guy who writes the music for the Mars Volta. He's a pretty prolific musician (released 4-5 cds in 2009). I've been digging on this because it's like his Mars Volta work but a little more song focused and it has more of a Latin vibe (the lead singer on this one is his brother instead of Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler Zavala). The words are all in Spanish but this cd is so sonically pleasing that it is easy to ignore that (these are my friend's words as I speak Spanish).

Also, been into Omar's Cryptomnesia cd which is way off the wall. It's like acid jazz. It's a lot of sound and really weird rhythms so it takes a few listens to dig it but it is awesome just like Xenophanes. It's actually El Grupo Nuevo de ORL which is him, the singer from MV, Zach Hill on drums, the bassist from MV (Alderete de la Pena who fucking shreds), and Jonathon Hitchke.

M&A is an incredibly solid album; but LCW is the de-facto Modest Mouse. It IS their sound. I couldn't recommend it enough.

I've listened to the Apples in Stereo album a few times. It's the same electronic-pop you would expect, and isn't a far cry from their last album, which certainly isn't a bad thing. I generally give an album a good 5 listens before I can really judge it, but this one gets better each time I listen to it. Very hooky.

Yeah, I think Mordecai is the song that I first heard that made me say, "Woah. These guys are more than just a 'one-dimensional' metal band." and got me to give them a closer listen.

Similar experience with "Lotus Eaters" from Opeth. The jazz/funk breakdown is badass.

I really like it, but it's much, much more subdued than I expected. Lots of mellow acoustic numbers. I'm kind of hoping it picks up into some of the grungy southern friend fuzz that I'm used to from MEC.

I only like "Stillness is the Move" off of that album. The dude's voice makes me angry. Everytime I hear him sing "like GaAaaAAaaaAaTorade" in the song "Temecula Sunrise" it makes me want to throw the album up against the wall.
