I have no sound on the box on which I re-installed XP Pro.
Yellow question mark by Multimedia Audio Controller. I run a Belarc scan and ther is no sound driver listed.
I download Realtek 97 from the Realtek site.
When I go to install I get a warning that this does not have the Microsoft signature, I tell it to proceed anyway, XP shuts down and stops the download before the drivers get loaded.

Is Realtek not what I should use? I know I'm a shitty end-user. Anybody got any tips?

PR thanks very much for answering. I downloaded the drivers. When I go to install them I get a message saying 'software not signed by Microsoft'.
I hit 'continue anyway', it loads to the very end then shuts down and gives me the blue screen of death with this technical message:

stop: 0x0000007E (0X0000005, 0XEE80C46D, OXF8996A74, 0XF8996770)

portcls.sys-address:0XEE80C460 base at EE80C000 datestamp 48025CCC

dump physical memory complete

Should I just accept the fact that this otherwise perfectly good box won't play sounds?

No... at least I wouldnt.

first try this...

>> click start
>> click run
>> type in "dxdiag" and click enter
>> click the "sound" tab
>> turn Acceleration OFF

I've been trying to find a fix for over 3-5 months.
Replacing memory, swaping out video cards, replacing the sound card etc.
(next I was going to get a new computer!!)

Try turning off the acceleration for the sound card.

restart

try installing the drivers then

if that does not work then

Pick up a cheap sound card which is about $15 including shipping

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829130001

install

disable the on board audio in the bios (if you need help with it I can PM you my phone number or we can IM if you have another computer available nearby)

boot up and install the drivers for your new sound card

you should be gold.
