dont they got like 50mil to 1 now? the human eye can only see up to 800:1 so it really dont matter

When you're talking about a LCD, the contrast ratio matters a great deal... Without a good contrast ratio, shadow details just get swallowed up by the bright areas of the screen.

From what I understand, the numbers don't matter. It's not a controlled number, so basically a company can basically put any number they want, and since it's not regulated it's not a problem. One company's 1000:1 is another's 5000:1.
