Returning from Oklahoma University’s spring football practice April 11 in Norman, Lucas Vincent was eager to make a phone call.

The Sooners had long been the dream destination for the Olathe North junior defensive tackle, but it wasn’t a member of that storied program’s staff he was intent on calling when he got home.

Instead, Vincent gave Andy Hill a ring. Hill is the wide receivers coach for the Missouri Tigers and was the lead recruiter trying to woo Vincent to Columbia.

Those efforts paid off last Saturday at the Mizzou spring football game where Vincent, who had planned to announce the Tigers as his college choice at a barbecue Sunday for family and friends anyway, gave the two-time reigning Big 12 North champion his verbal commitment.

“I feel at home there (Mizzou), and I really like a lot of the people there after talking to some of the players and coaches,” Vincent said. “It’s got a really home atmosphere.”

That atmosphere stood in stark contrast to the elitist mentality Vincent said he encountered at OU.

“They thought that since they were Oklahoma they didn’t have to work hard to recruit, that they should get commitments just because they’re Oklahoma,” Vincent said. “I just didn’t like it there. I didn’t like that attitude.”

And he didn’t think he needed his official visits in the fall either.

“My mom (Genia) said something about that, but once I knew, I just knew,” Vincent said. “I went ahead and made my choice, and I’m not backing down from it.”

Vincent, who won the Kansas 6A heavyweight wrestling championship in February, hopes to help lead the Eagles to the 6A championship next fall, then wants to enroll at Missouri for the spring semester.

He hopes to get a jump on earning playing time as a true freshman in 2010.

“They want me to come out and probably start as a freshman,” Vincent said. “That’s another big factor in my choice. Other schools have told me that, too, but Missouri is a powerhouse in the Big 12 North.”

Vincent already has a relationship with the last Tigers defensive tackle to start four years on the line, Ziggy Hood, who might be selected in the first round of the NFL draft this weekend.

“He’s a real nice guy, and he was texting me yesterday to say I made the right choice,” Vincent said of Hood. “He’s the kind of guy I’d like to get to know.”

Vincent said his parents wished he had chosen Kansas simply because it’s closer to home, but there’s never been a great deal of loyalty to the Sunflower state’s college teams in the Vincent clan.

“My dad (Steve) usually cheers against the team that I cheer for, so he doesn’t really have a favorite,” Vincent said.

Judging by the amount of Tigers’ apparel on display Sunday at the Vincent home, the entire family has a favorite college team now.

Well, we did get Richardson and Gabbert, our only two 5* players, ever, from St. Louis, not to mention Maclin.

It sucks to miss out on guys like Ronnie Wingo, but next year's WR class has 3 or 4 4* recruits just inside of Missouri.

Nice! Vincent will look good next to Big Sheldon.

We're finally getting the elite linemen that we need to compete with the OU's and UT's of the world.

Still need a rush end, but the two bulls in the center will take a lot of pressure off whoever we put on the ends.

Nice pickup -- now onto the O-line.

I hear ya'; that's the ugliest fucking eyesore ever devised by man, and enough to make one take a poker to ones eyes.

With these two DL pickups, we are almost assembling a prototypical Tampa 2 D.

I think that's a wise choice. It's a good scheme to run against the Spread, especially if you've got great interior penetrators.

I know Vincent. To be honest the moment Kansas got Edwards out of Garland, Texas, his recruitment was over. Not saying he was going to go to KU (at one time that was the thought), but he saw the doors closing around him. From the sound of it at North, KU has to many young players at his position that are similar to him.

Here's to hoping Nick Demien commits. That would be huge...literally.

Nice pickup -- now onto the O-line.MU is stocked at DE. The Smiths are absolute studs (one a redshirt freshman, the other a true sophomore) and Coulter makes Curry cry.

Demien and Lucas (WR) are the next BIG targets.

Most of the recruits for KU couldn't play for MU right now. There are literally no football recruits choosing MU over KU because they are worried about getting enough playing time.

Vincent wouldn't play over any of the young KU DT's and he knows that to. It just happens to be the one position KU is very deep in youth and talent.

He has attended something like 4-5 KU games in the past two seasons. He knows KU's roster. Like I said, I know the kid. Once Edwards verballed to KU, they were dead to Vincent. Frankly Edwards is a James McClinton clone, but the others are all very similar in style to what Vincent will be in college.

Just from reading this article, it looks like Vincent thought OU would kiss his ass as their best recruit. Then he found out they had 4 or 5 guys as good or better than him. he'll find out he is the kickee rather than the kickor when asses get kicked while playing OU.

They're in the mix, from what I hear. But it's definitely early and he has a lot of teams on his list. FWIW, I don't think he'll seriously consider MU.

Big Sheldon will be back soon enough, and with three full years to play. No worries. Vincent is a very nice player...all of this carping from the Beakers is just background noise. We all know that they didn't REALLY want the kid. There was no spot for a kid like that...not with all of the 5 star DTs on the roster already!!!

Kansas had BETTER win the North this year. If not this year, then probably never. We'll see how it feels when Sod has the target on his chest (other than the defense having to bear crawl to get down low enough to see said target).

I do wonder though if he'll improve much while playing at the JUCO level. The MU coaches must have some sort of relationship with the COS coaches, no?

So, when Vincent announced to his family, friends, and Missouri coaches that he would be a Tiger come December 2009, he was well aware of the consequences around school.

That hasn't stopped him from making sure he wears Missouri gear, wherever he goes.
