Well, one good thing about Herm\Carl, they left us with a shit load of money to use...

that accounts for Cassel's $14mill, i assume...which means we have a lot of damn money to spend

I think that has to do more of Clark's thing instead of Herm and Carl, IMHO.

Well, they (Herm especially) was all about the youth movement, signing young guys cheap, not a bunch of expensive FA's on his watch (LJ not withstanding). I agree, Hunt may have been behind it, but credit where credit is due, even if it does go to Carl and Herm in this case. They left the team with a good salary cap and a ton of young players, many of which are throw aways for cheap. Haley must be loving this shit...

I would assume it does as well. If you crunch the numbers from early February and compare to this, the conclusion would be that Cassel's number is in there.

"Use" being the operative word, as opposed to "spend".

I doubt we spend much of this cap space. I'm hoping we 'use' it to kill off some bad long-term contracts we have (I'm looking at you, Larry Johnson). We can more than afford to accelerate that signing bonus against the cap. It would also allow us to do something like deal Dorsey should we feel so inclined (not that I necessarily advocate that move).

I thought the arbitration hearing allowed us to dump Larry without a cap hit since he violated terms of his contract nullifying his signing bonus impact.

I thought the arbitration hearing allowed us to dump Larry without a cap hit since he violated terms of his contract nullifying his signing bonus impact.

It allowed us to consider his 2009 salary non-guaranteed.

There's still the matter of the bookkeeping value of his signing bonus. It will still be accelerated onto this year's cap if we don't keep him. We do not, however, have to also include the $3+ million he had guaranteed if we punt his ass.

A Look At Pre-Draft Cap Room
Posted by Mike Florio on April 22, 2009, 10:49 p.m.

We’ve gotten a look-see at the team-by-team salary cap numbers as the draft approaches.
The full list, for every team, is right here. - (at top of post)
The Eagles lead the way with more than $37 million in cap room. Though it’s not clear whether this figure takes into account Jason Peters’ new deal, the number is remarkable.
The Bucs are next, with more than $35 million. The Chiefs have more than $32 million, and the Packers have more than $27 million.
The bulges in Philly and Tampa result from the fact that the teams carried over more than $20 million and more than $25 million, respectively, from 2008, as a result of the devices available to push unspent cap dollars into future seasons. (Rather than, you know, spending them in an effort to win a championship.)
But absent a new CBA, the time to spend is now. If there’s no salary cap in 2010, the money that could have been used will be lost.
The team with the least wiggle room is the Steelers, who have less than $450,000 in cap space. They’ll need to clear some dollars in order to sign their rookies.
Finally, remember those rumors that the Jets would be incredibly far over the 2009 cap due to not likely to be earned incentives achieved in 2008? As it turns out, the Jets actually carried over $1.2 million — and they have more than $12.6 million in cap room.

So, what's our cap look like now with Tony Gonzalaz off the books? Anybody know?

Arizona is very close to the max cap number. We have plenty of money available if they agree to trade Boldin to us. Maybe we can give up a mid round pick this year (or a player) and our first next year.
