So I am moving into a new place and we need a living room TV. I see these TV's up to like 61" on Craigslist for around $400.

Does anyone own one? Do they need a lot of maintenance or what?

Thanks.

You should really just pony up a couple hundred more and get a 42" flat panel. Brand new.

Man. If we had an extra $200 for a tv, we would.

Anyways, where can I get a 42" 1080p flat panel for $600?

Go call up a Tv repair store and ask them.

Most of the tv's in back bin were old sony projection cathodes and dlp's. These TV's producers are smooth in how they make an extra buck. They way overcharge on parts. Thats why people aren't fixing their sets. DLP's have too many moving parts. Research the price to fix them and their reliability.

I like DLP. You can get one BIG ASS screen for really cheap. To me, the picture looks better than a projection.

Make sure you and anyone else who will watch the DLP regularly takes a look before buying it. Some people experience the "rainbow effect". Basically, you'll see a bunch of colors in front of the picture. It's rare, but I guess it makes it pretty unwatchable.

I would usually suggest avoiding used TV's but if you are tying to pick up something like you are looking at, it might make some sense. Decent chance you get a POS and picture quality has improved over the last few years.

Nothing wrong with a DLP at all other than the extra space they take up. They may not look as good as some of the better LCD/plasma alternatives of current models but I get that you are looking for something cheap. If you do opt for craigslist I would try to lowball them as much as you feel comfortable with. Used TV's really have shit for value.

Thats a pretty good price for a 2 year old TV.

Really guys, I would like to buy a new 42" LCD for $600, I have the money, but I'm trying to do the smart thing and save every penny I can.

Of course, I dont NEED a Tv, but we are all big sports fans, so we want one so we can gather in the Living room and watch the NBA Playoffs/Baseball games, and of course the Chargers games in September.

On that note, this is the first year since 2000 that I am not a Chargers season ticket holder :banghead::banghead::banghead:

That's because the kid screwed up. He told me he was leaving for NY, this weekend (Sat), and that there was no way he could take it with him. It was listed for $650. I offered 350. He litterally said"Fuck you", and I said "I'll be by on Friday to pick it up. I called him on Friday, and asked if he had sold it. He said no, and I went over there, pulled out 375, and loaded up the TV. I love it BTW. The picture is great. The HD is very crisp.

I'd get more info on that Mitsubishi. The price seems low. Leads me to believe the light source(bulb) my need replaced. Who knows, they just may want to get rid of it. DLP is the way to go if you want something that big for a good price.

Even if you have to pay $150-$200 for a bulb, its still worth it, IMO.

I've read online that replacing the bulb is fairly easy.

I bought my RPTV in 2001 or 2002 and I will never buy another one.

I'm sure the newer sets are much better, but mine always needed some minor tweak or calibration due to the fact that it's a mechanical device. And in 6 years of use, all 3 CRT's were replaced once (the red twice).

Ok guys thanks for the help but I decided that I'm not going to pay for the TV.

I already bought 2 couches, and rather than split money on everything, I figured I'll just say they don't have to pay for the couches, and they pay for the TV.

That way whenever it is we move out, I own the couches.

I saw an RCA 720p lcd at Wal Mart yesterday for $378. Yes, it's a crappy tv, but it's cheap. They have Vizio 42" for between $500-$600.

The worst flat panel tv's look better than the best projection tv's IMO.

That's my experience too, but like I said, mine was constantly needing to be converged so that all 3 CRT's were aligned.

In my head it's "hit-smack".

There's a couple of compound consonants in there.

It's actually pronounced "San Diego Super Chargers" and it even has a kind of melody to it.
