I think they're saying that he has the flexibility to play more than the strictly traditional 4-3 DE position, not necessarily that he's a 3-4 DE.... Versatility was his big attribute.

I see it as he had an advantage in that he could play somewhere on the line no matter what scheme we run....

His weight, length, strength and athleticism lend itself to a 3-4 defense end. A man of size size can take up blockers so that the LBs can make tackles.

It's why alot of times he looked pretty underwhelming.
