They made him annoying since day 1. Thats just how they wanted his character. They made him a whiney bitch. Segal the goofy one and Barney the think i am cool guy that gets ass because he's cheesy. It just works.

Season 4 has been ok at best. Its just time to meet The Mother now. They have dragged it on far to long imo. They only say she was at some party once, but never showed her. They need to at least have them get together then break up for a while or something. Season 3 was epic. Season 4, not so much, but i am sure that it may have to do with how both chicks got pregnant at the same time.

I got rid of HBO, how is season two?

It's just now getting ginned up, but they have;

Mia [Hope Davis] a former patient from the beginning of his practice who's now a big trial attorney. Ran into her because she intercepted his dossier when he came in to meet with legal counsel about a lawsuit filed by the father of Alex who blames him for Alex crashing his jet. Basically, she blames him for a life without a family because she sensed, back in the day, that Paul thought she should abort a child she was expecting with a drummer BF as she was finishing law school [which she did]. She's also coming off an extramarital affair with her boss [she's single, he's married].

Walter [Frasier's Dad, John Mahoney], a corporate bigwig who's had panic attacks since youth, after his older brother [the golden child, full ride to Harvard pending] drowned and his body was swept away never to be recovered. He's got all these tainted formula, tainted food problems in his international company going on, and his daughter has gone to sub-Saharan Africa to care for the indigent, which he interprets as placing herself in mortal danger. Basically a type-A with a pending annuerism.

April [Alison Pill, the 'good daughter' in Pieces of April], a student who is in complete denial about a serious and recent cancer diagnosis, her brother has autism, and she doesn't want to burden anyone with letting them know, and she doesn't want treatment [which is an underlying issue for Paul who's in the middle of the whole Alex/didn't stop the suicide, drama].

And Oliver an AA teen whose parents are divorcing [along with his parents in the session, insofar as they can keep from arguing], their attempts to shield him have the effect of him not knowing what he's supposed to do, say, how he's supposed to act/react, etc. Doesn't know if they are or 'might be' divorcing, didn't know that they'd stopped efforts to adopt a brother for him, etc.

And of course there's the stuff with Gina, he's divorced and practicing in NY now, comes back to CT for therapy and to see his kids on the WE, also he hooked up with a married former childhood sweetheart, who's a) married, and b) another patient of Gina's.

Yeah, hasn't had enough episodes to qualify for must see, but it holds promise. The 'zombie' bit was surprisingly touching, though it's disconcerting to think of Amber Tamblin as a sexual being, since I just got around to seeing Joan of Arcadia last fall [though I have finally gotten past her creeping out of that well in The Ring].

I do enjoy the show, though it ranks 3rd for me behind The Office and Lost.

I like both of those as well. The difference for me is the writing and content. The office relies more on stupid comedy - facial expressions, actions and easy jokes. Big Bang Theory has humorous characters - Sheldon, Howard and Rajesh - it has spectacular underlying humor through dialogue. I especially enjoy it being an engineer and having a science/technical background.

Baby Lee
04-29-2009, 05:55 PM
Nice to know I am not the only one that follows Medium.

There's so much going for that show. They're smart about not limiting it to Alison's [albeit very creative] mystery solving arc, but the family dynamic and the fleshing out of their characters [are there three . . . I'd say adorable, but the teen is a little old for adorable, she's more of a 'credible' teen, . . kids in TV right now], and the husband both flummoxed and supportive, as best he can be, of what's going on around him.

The solid, credible, network of friends and family around her really enhances the entire experience.

I'm growing tired of it. Ted needs to meet their mother already...

That's not the issue. It could go on for a while without him meeting her but what's troubling is the humor which, currently, is lazy and pathetic.

My main issue with the show is that it's very "punch line" based these days. Not that the end of each show is a joke, but they basically figure out some moral of the story that they want to tell and then design a plot around it. That results in some very weak plots and even weaker characters. All of them are wishy-washy as hell this season.

DaneMcCloud

The show is weak now. I HATE the phony laugh track and only one out of every four episodes is memorable or quote-worthy.

It feels like the final three seasons of "Friends", which was once a very good show that just drug on way, way, way, way too long.

They need to introduce Ted's wife to be and get this thing moving.

I'll never watch it in real-time because it's time just not worth wasting.

I don't understand Mad Men. I just finished Season 1. I'm still baffled as to why Don cheats on his hot wife all the time. I'm hoping it becomes a little clearer.

Mad Men is a character study of "Don Draper". As they creators delve deeper in Don's psyche, some of your questions will be answered.

Personally, I think this show is as good as the Sopranos at its height of creativity and the show only gets better in seasons two and three.

I still think this is a great sitcom. Hilarious episode last Monday. Wrestlers and Robots. I guess I don't expect much out of comedy sitcoms. IMO, they aren't there to tell a story or have some good ending. They are there for clever writing, funny jokes, and laughs. It's not a soap opera, it's just a never ending comedy. They have set it up end, but I expect them to milk it as long as they can.

In the two part finale, Barney convinces Marshall to give his son the middlename of "Waitforit" whilst Marshall is drunk at a casino as Lily goes into labor. The first half is their Homeric attempts to get the hospital, finally assisted by a bus full of elderly people. Ted finally makes amends with Robin to just remain friends, and Barney takes his stripper girlfriend to Hawaii. Before they can get aboard the plane, Barney's magic mystery box is scrutinized by security and he, Quinn, and the box are detained as terrorists. In a small room, Barney (NPH with the help of a fellow magician) executes the magic trick centered around the box which produces a ring, and he proposes to Quinn (important because Quinn would only stop stripping if she were to get married, something that irks Barney).

The newly engaged couple visit Marshall and Lily's apartment to see Marvin Waitforit Erikson, while Ted decides to call Victoria as she had been the closest match for him. She arrives at the bar in a wedding dress; she's ready to leave her fiancee for Ted. He opts to drive her back to the church because he knows how shitty it is to be left at the altar. As he arrives at the church he doesn't stop, and he and Victoria drive off in the sunset.

Flash forward to Barney's wedding, where Ted is summoned to talk to the bride. Lily ushers him into a room where the bride is revealed to be Robin.

I guess this has been 'disproven' already, but given the events of this last season finale my assumption is that Victoria is Ted's wife and the mother is a surrogate. Otherwise, the creators of the show are rather uncreatively dragging things out to maintain interest in a season 8 and beyond.

I can't decide whether it's good or bad there's so much hate for Ted. On one hand it's good because Ted's supposed to be an everyman type that should get people reflecting on similar decisions they've made that Ted get's lit up for.

On the other, the fact Barney is such an awesome character bails the creator out because your lead character shouldn't be hated more than short stretches at a time.

Bump: so season 8 premiered tonight and is already up on CBS for streaming...

I guess it's a good segue into the season considering the events from 4 months ago..

Good meta joke with Ted not wanting to explain what happened concerning the wedding to the old lady at the train station, Lily and Marshall's 'zombie-parent vision' was a nice bit of humor that stayed consistent with the rest of the show, along with the banter between Victoria/Ted and later with Robin, Quinn, and Barney at the bar with Starbuck's hus- errr Nick.

Another big positive is Ted's interaction with Victoria's fiancee... It seems like the writers aren't tone deaf to the absolute hate many fans have with the supposed protagonist of the show, and having Klaus leave Victoria as she's leaving him absolves Ted from any blame for 'stealing' someone else's love when it had happened to him with Stella. Also keeping in step with the show picking right back up with its usual sense of humor, is Klaus' monologue about finding the one as it leads up to the end of the episode with a full body (minus face) reveal of the Mother at the train station along with montage that underscores the point of being sure you've found 'the one'.

I guess the downside of the episode is the fact that this season starts off with plotlines we know aren't going anywhere in the grand scheme of things with Victoria and Quinn, which is a shame because both ladies (characters and actresses alike) are ones you think could put some steam into the storytelling, but that's not the case.

My personal observations / reading too much into things for the ep: 1) Why is Ted's hand wrapped up? 2) Is it just me or is Bob Saget's narration different in how he's delivering it..?

How weird that it looks like that the Glee love interest becomes the HIMYM love interest at long last? I can't believe they pulled the rabbit out of their hat in such a way.

Also, good way to dramatically pull things together after a few lackluster last episodes. I didn't think I'd like it but I didn't think there'd be a revelation.

Anyways, I dont know why they are holding out on the mother this long. they shoudl have revealed her a few years back then just had some storylines with her and ended it with them getting married which could have been this year or next.

Fucking stupid the way they did this. It used to be one of my favorite shows, then it went to complete crap.

I think it makes sense she's not a "dime piece." it works on the level that the women he's dated before are all hot as a product of Ted's status as an unreliable narrator. As well, it goes to show that it's chemistry over surface attraction that proves to the audience that she's the one.

I liked the premiere; feels just like the best parts of season 8. The only part that seemed forced was the scenes with Marshall which seems to be a penchant of the series as of late.

I'm already a "Mother" homer so I won't go into what I liked in her scenes with Lily, but I think her introduction to the cast won't be too much of an issue. I was wary of the idea of Ted and her interacting before "current day" Ted meets her but their scene at the end of the episode just works and doesn't seem forced as I figured it would be. Also, I want to call out foreshadowing in that front desk clerk referenced the Inn as being the site of "countless conceptions and one grisly murder" combined with the fact Ted and the Mother visit the place one year later.. Give or take 9 months and it will be February/March 2015 which is when Ted's daughter is an infant.

Interesting approach to have all the cast meet the mother before Ted does. I'm also intrigued that old Ted is supposed to make some appearances. I wonder if there's a big twist ending we're not ready for.

I really like the mother character. Really hard character not to like. Problem is, the show just isn't as clever as it used to be. The plot lines yesterday felt way too contrived. They should have taken the hint from Breaking Bad and wrapped it up while the iron was hot.

The final scene where Ted was sitting with future wife at the bar in the hotel....after Ted has his nice little speech even my wife (who loves the show) turns and says "That's was really gay."

The last few seasons have basically drawn out the plot line for Marshall and Lily settling in to parenthood and Barney settling out of a bachelor. Two plot lines that really kill what makes those characters great. That was the point where the show should have started wrapping up. And I still hate the Zooey plotline. What the fuck was that? Just another chick to throw in the mix to buy time that did nothing at all to move the story forward.

I actually bet the series wraps up on a strong note. I think they've had the ending in mind for a really long time. It's not like Lost where they rushed it along. From what I've read, old Ted will be featured and the wedding weekend should end several episodes before the finale. If that's the case, there's a ton of potential for how they present the next 20 years in just a few episodes.

And I bet they're saving one last twist for the end.

I wish I could explain the drawing out of plotlines by the writers being unsure of renewal.. But it.. doesn't fit. Orrr maybe it does.

S6 set the trend of having really good episodes with ones that fall flat, and also the repercussions of ending Barney/Robin in the previous season. If Carter/Bays intended for those two to end up together and therefore the reason why Ted meets the Mother, then it should've been set in stone they'd restart their relationship by the end of Season 5. Season 6 *should* be what we're seeing now.

Blah. It's annoying. I look at things through rosier glasses because I started watching reruns of the show on TV in 2011 then Netflix'ed to the point I caught up by the time "Symphony of Illumination" aired. I don't have the fatigue that most tenured fans have had at this point, but at the same time I can see just how much some episodes have done nothing to advance the plot. (IE the entirety of the Zoe arc, the Quinn/Barney Arc, Lily and Marshall's relocation to Long Island, most eps of Season 8's first half)

The three things I think are the most unsettling/confusing:

Ted's bandaged hand. It must pertain to Robin's locket and Ted's (ZOMFG JUST GIVE IT THE FUCK UP) feelings for her and the foreshadowing from when Barney told Ted to STFU about his behavior with the "I'm marrying Robin -not you- from the hot wedding planner episode and the "wild card who ruins the wedding" motif. Shit is going to be fucked up and I don't see how it can be handled in the last half of the season without it being left unresolved or rushed to a resolution by the series finale.

Also, Ted's relocation to Chicago.. Dude listed his dream home and packed up his apartment in the city for an entirely new job. You mean to say he meets The Mother and just says 'Fuck it; I'm staying here with you SugarTits!' ..? No. He's gotta move out of NYC but this again means it has to be resolved. Also the fact that they have a kid by February 2015 really constricts the amount of time for these two to meet, date, marry and furgle,

Similarly, Lily/Marshall's move to Rome. He's accepted his judgeship, Lily hasn't a fucking clue about this fact and the fact she's been the most self-centered characters, this will be a problem. This little issue I feel will be the first to be resolved though not in the way I think makes sense.

I'd say that about covers it.

Have him drive off into the sunset with Victoria at the end of Season 5 (instead of 7) and we can call it a day.

Marshall and Lilly just decided to have a baby; Barney showed the beginning of a soul and Mosby met the mother.

Well considering that the show runners of HIMYM wanted to end it 2 seasons ago, I will say they did a good job of stretching the series out.

From what I read, this is CBS' only show that the average viewer is less than 50 years old. So CBS backed a dump truck full of cash to the show runners and the cast to do another year or two.

You can almost see a really, really compelling conclusion to the show if you take snippets of the last 3 seasons, and combine them into one season. For example... thought episode 1 Monday was effective, and then episode 2 was your typical bullshit story line to stretch the season out. It did nothing for me.

Like many shows the characters are ditching their flaws in order to make them likeable. The worst ever was when Maj. Houlihan was no longer a bitch on MASH. Barney just isn't as funny now that he isn't chasing every skirt out there. The network pulled the string on this show longer than the creators wanted. They knew that once certain things happened the tension between characters that made the show funny would no longer be there. I think they've tried to make Ted even more a caricature of himself. I don't think that's working. Its going to have some dying pains. Like many I think they will make a strong finish when it more resembles how they wanted the show to end anyway.

When I started watching this show, I settled upon the idea that the last line of the series (or at least Ted's narration) should be "And that's how I met your mother," showing the mother ONLY in a quick shot (kind of like what we saw at the end of Season 8) or a brief scene (like the one on the bus with the mother and Lily) that shows how compatible Ted and the mother are.

I hope they wrap this up well.

Am I right in tracking the timeline that Ted might need to accidentally knock the mother up quickly? Maybe that's why he stays in New York?

i should say median age. here is what i found a few years ago:

Big Bang Theory 8:00 & 8:30
HH Rating: 8.6 & 8.8(last year: 8.4)
A18-49 Rating: 4.9 & 5.1 (last year: 4.9)
%Male/%Female within 18-49 audience: 47%/53%
Median Age: 50 (last year: 49)
Total Viewers (000): 14,619 avg. (last year: 14.060)

My point still stands. CBS skews older.
