What would it be? At this time last year I would have said Carl Peterson, but he is gone now. My pick would be religion. There is more bad shit that happens every day because of religion than anything else except maybe money. Well that and Natural Light. If you had the power what would you change? No wrong answers here.

Obesity. I'm not obese but it would be brilliant to be able to eat anything you want and not become over weight. No more fat chicks and no lard asses for the ladies.Yeah that would be pretty sweet. There is absolutley no excuse though for being obese unless you have no self control, refuse to work out, or have a serious thyroid issue. Now we have lap band surgery so people with no self control can't eat their way to a heart attack. Also enough with the congrats to people that get Lap Band surgery or gastric bypass. They haven't exactly conquered their demons. It's just another easy out for lazy self indulgent people. I heard a comedian once say "would you congratulate a cocaine addict for quitting because they had their nostrils stapled shut?"

Without death, the world would become a pretty shitty place due to the resulting overpopulation and the rapid exhaustion of our natural resources.

irishjayhawk
05-03-2009, 10:56 PM
Wait, what? Why? How?

Because it's simply the degeneration of cells. Preventing or stopping that would be a very good step. Of course, we'd also have to have an exit strategy off the planet in case of overpopulation.

I'm pretty sure that if I'm fortunate enough to live to be old as ****, I'll probably welcome death.

As would I, but that presumes that we'd get that far. The current theory about what I've put forth suggests that they'll develop a therapy that x age range will take. And by the time that dose will have done all it can, another will exponentially build on that until it effectively keeps us alive forever. The downside is the cutoff point of people that can and cannot accept therapy.

Here's the leading guy in this realm:

You get rid of it and you probably get rid of much of the hate that goes on in the world. It would also take care of some other problems as well.

I was actually taken aback by that sentiment as well, considering I've been an outspoken critic of religion many a time. That said, I like the discussion of death as a disease to be cured much more than I like bickering about religion.

Why would you get rid of something that gives people hope when they see no other reason for living?

Not to turn this into a religious thread which is amazing it hasn't happened yet, but I'd like to point out two things. First, lots of things can give people hope but that doesn't make them true. Second, it isn't anyone's fault that they cannot see a reason for living outside of religion. That's just as sad.

Are you really against religion, or are you against organized religion?

That depends on how you distinguish between them. I'm wholeheartedly against organized religion. Religion itself, would be a more interesting and complex question. I am not, however, in favor of ignoring evidence, making claims without substantiation, circular logic, or the like. If that is necessary for regular religion, it'd be hard for me to be "for" it.

Brett Favre

This would be a close third.

I like how there's people that complain that religious types try and impress their beliefs on other people when the amount of words posted on chiefsplanet denouncing religion dwarfes the amount promoting it.

Denouncing religion ≠ impressing beliefs on other people. FYI

If you did away with death, you'd end up with a world with lots of pain, assuming that you can't also do away with lightning strikes, train accidents, diseases, weapons, and other stuff like that. No, you have to keep death if you're still battling those things.

I should rephrase. Death by "natural causes". One could still die, as you point out, from many things.

I'm not sure that all sickness and illness would be gone. I'm just saying I think the barrier of death, as it is now, is something to rid the world of. I'm confident people would still die, per se.

Why would you get rid of something that gives people hope when they see no other reason for living? Are you really against religion, or are you against organized religion?Luv I think your great but here is what I have against religion. Say you consider yourself a Christian...OK. Well that means you have to believe in a talking snake that out smarted the first humans, Jones lived inside a fish or Whale for three days, Moses partied the Red Sea, oh and my favorite bed time story was when Noah built a HUGE ass ship to carry two of everything on earth to ride out the storm.

In two of the gospels they forgot to mention the virgin mother.....Don't you think a newspaper editor might want that part to be included? All the gospels that where written where written at least 30 years after his death. Talk about a he said she said scenario going on. For every person that hears and tells the story it is going to get further and further away from what actually happened. That and the story of Jesus mimmicks the story of Horus in Egypt a thousand years before Jesus. Born from a virgin mother, baptized in the river, crucified, and then rose three days later to be with his Daddy, you guessed it.....God.

As far as religion goes I could care less what somebody wants to believe. It's their right (in this country), but when people kill in the name of it Muslim, Christianity, jewish, etc.. That's what bothers me. Think for yourself. Don't just follow everybody like a herd of cattle around the the rock in Mecca. Pretty much every major war throughout human history has had something to do with faith. It's a very very dangerous thing thing that lets fundamentalist kill in the name of their God. It's worse than cruelty, intolerance, and all of the above, because people tell themselves that they'll go to Paradise and get 72 virgins if they blow themselves up in the name of their God. Why seventy-two? That's an odd number.

I completely get where you're coming from. I wasn't trying to argue, really. I just don't think it's right to take away one's hope or belief is all. Yes, bad things have happened in the name of [insert religion's god's name here]. But if it (religion) gives me a more fulfilled sense of self knowing that someone is watching out for me, then who is anyone to have the right to take that away from me? I guess that's what I meant by the difference in religion and organized religion. I have a belief system. That's how I get through rough days. Take away organized religion, but don't take away my personal religion, however that's defined.

First, lots of things can give people hope but that doesn't make them true. Second, it isn't anyone's fault that they cannot see a reason for living outside of religion. That's just as sad.

This isn't a response to I.J.H. in particular, it was just some of the quotes I saw that probably represent a goodly portion of views.

It's all boiling down to what the truth is.

If God exists and is worthy of worshipping, then I think you'd agree it would be silly to pretend he does not exist or deserve worship.

I am in total agreement with you, if God doesn't even exist, then why should we treat him as some source of false hope or reason for living.

Apparently, there is disagreement on the actual state of God's existence.

As for religion being the source of hate in this world, I get the sense that people here are mostly thinking "Christianity" when they say this. Perhaps people aren't thinking this.

Christians have indeed acted with any and all manner of distasteful and murderous ways over the centuries, not to mention plain old rude. One would do well, however, to distinguish between people who call themselves Christian and those who do so in name only.

Surely you've seen such people. This dabbling type is seen in other venues.

The casual yoga person, only really meditating during class. The football "fan" who says yay for the chiefs, but really doesn't care who's playing or who wins. The supposed Gates die hard, who secretly eats most meals at Jackstack's.

Do you really want the iffy chiefs fan determining what truly is a chiefs fan?
The yoga so-so person getting to determine what IS true yoga lifestyle?

Course not. Everything isn't as it's labeled. In third world countries, they know that not much is being done in the name of secular-ness to start schools, improve medical treatment, care for the unwanted.

Nothing is done in the name of Allah or the Buddhist gods or by Hindu's either. If you're dying by disease, or poor, or an orphaned, it must be karma, or what the gods wanted. This is the kind of "other-centered" thinking at the core of other religions, and can rear it's head also in Christianity where not practiced according to the book. It's not a popular idea, and it can come across as sour grapes, I realize.

If none of the religions were true, I'd join others in a war against them all.

"Divide it by 2" /GodHey man I'm not an atheist. I'm an Agnostic. I don't know what happens when you die. There may be a God, there may not be. I know I've had a ton of near death experiences in my life and I never saw a bright light leading me to heaven or a sign that pointed to hell. I have no idea which is why I won't let a human being with all of their corruptions, agendas, and limitations tell what happens when you die, because they don't know. How do I know? Because they do not possess powers that I do not. Every prophecy, gospel, prediction (St. John) in Revelations have gotten their information much further down the line from eye witness testimony (which in itself is open for suggestion). If somebody can show me some type of proof one way or another I'll jump aboard. For now I will continue to proceed with doubt. Doubt is humble. I'm not sitting here telling you what is or isn't right in regards to the big question. If anybody says they do they are flat out dead ass wrong. If they are proved to be right it was a lucky guess at best.
