Reynolds to star in 'X-Men' spinoff (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118003226.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&nid=2562)
Fox has begun development on 'Deadpool'
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Twentieth Century Fox has begun development on "Deadpool," an "X-Men" spinoff that will be crafted as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

The character is one of the most popular in Marvel Comics' X-Men universe. Deadpool is Wade Wilson, a mercenary who, dying of cancer, submits himself to the Weapon X genetic alteration experiment and emerges as an indestructible semi-sane anti-hero. Reynolds seemed destined to play the character. In one reference in the Marvel Comics, Deadpool is described as a mix between "a Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds."

In one of the "Easter egg" endings of "Wolverine," Deadpool is seen rising from the rubble and whispering "Shhh" to audiences.

The film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel.

Fox is also in the formative stages of a "Wolverine" sequel that will encompass the samurai storyline that was hinted at as Wolverine sat in a bar in Japan as the film concluded (Daily Variety, May 4).

Separately, Fox is developing "Magneto," a film about the X-Men villain with a script by Shelton Turner, and "X-Men: First Class," which Josh Schwartz is penning.

Reynolds next stars with Sandra Bullock in the Anne Fletcher-directed "The Proposal," which Disney releases June 19. He also completed the Kieran and Michele Mulroney-directed "Paper Man."

In a not-so-surprising bit of news 20th Century Fox has continued their trend of staying away from risky and sticking to conventional by hiring “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to write a screenplay for X-Men: First Class, a film that will center on the students at Professor Xavier’s Institute for Higher Learning. Such characters are assumed to include Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat. However, it could also mean they are going way back in time and we will see Wolverine, Storm, Jean Gray and Cyclops as first year students.

Fox is already set to release X-Men Origins: Wolverine in May next year and is also working on a similar, origin story spin-off for Magneto, the character played by Ian McKellen in the first three X-Men films. The Magneto feature would likely be a great place to transition into an origin story of the Xavier Institute as X-Men 3 already showed Magneto and Xavier working together at one point to help troubled mutant children before Magneto went rogue.

The Variety article announcing X-Men: First Class also reminds us of the potential Deadpool spin-off based on the character played by Ryan Reynolds in Wolverine. After seeing the preview reel of Wolverine at Comic Con there was also a little bit with Gambit, so who knows what cards Fox may have up their sleeves. One thing’s for certain, it’s not a break from tradition.

The only way I can see Fox digging themselves out of the hole they created for themselves in 2008 with an endless slate of films that inspire zero confidence is to stop going the traditional route when it comes to their films. All of their films of late have such cookie cutter molds they fit into that there is very little surprise. Sure, they are glossy and sleak, but when it comes to substance and content they are empty. Josh Schwartz may be a good choice when you are you need a dramatic TV pilot filled with teen angst and self-loathing, but the world of comicbook films has started to shift to where people are expecting more. I can’t imagine them skating by with another B-level director shooting a tweener script.

I still can't get used to the idea of Ryan Reynolds in a serious role. He's too...""quirky".

The true story behind Deadpool is his extra scarred tissue on his body due to his mutation causing them, bet you anything that they don't scar his face, you can't have Ryan Reynolds pretty boy face messed up. Knowing Fox it'll be one scar on his right forearm or something.

I don't know. I can't ever remove Ryan Reynolds the actor from stuff like "Waiting" and "Van Wilder". I can't watch him in anything serious and not chuckle.

I believe though his healing ability eventually fixes his face in the comic..

I was thinking the same thing. To me, "Reynolds to star" makes me think of Burt, not whoever the hell that other guy is.

I guess we're showing our age. :D

I thought his role in Smoking Aces was pretty good.

He should play the best X-Man of them all: Van Wilder.
