In the late 80's and early 90's I remember driving 100+ miles (one way) on a Sundays to a Chiefs game and leaving the house at 0530 and drinking Gin and OJ on the way to a noon game the stadium.

We would drink beer till 30 minutes or so before kickoff and drink while we were in the stadium.

There were times I swear I don't even remember driving home or how I got there (Sorry Mike).

There is no excuse I can even think of except I was yound and STUPID that would suffice and that is no excuse just the truth. Laws were a little different back then but killing somoeone because of DUI would still be as inexcusable as ever. I can only thank the good lord that I never had to face that.

Anyone that drinks and drives is playing the ODDS in two different ways.

1. How long are you going to get away with it before you get caught?
2. How long are you going to get away with NOT having an accident where someone may die. If you are drunk it doesn't matter who was REALLY at fault because YOU will always be to blame in the laws eyes.

Yeah, try having people you know killed by idiots like that before calling it something "little" next time. I love how people categorize doing that as a normal process of life, like it's OK. Oh, but when you run into someone or cause an accident because you were driving under the influence, THEN we've got issues...

True, its just amazing how people didn't get all bent out of shape over that UNTIL he left for Minnesota. The consensus on here was that he wasn't "high risk" Carl was an asshole for not re-signing him. he cleaned up his act etc. People thought Allen was a fun guy, good character, just had a couple run ins with the law, but it wasn't anything serious etc.

Then he leaves for Minnesota and people on here bitch n moan whenever he gets media attention saying hes a dumbass cowboy blah blah, drunken driving idiot and call him all the names in the book etc.

I never said it was normal. There are many people who havent gotten a DWI. I just don't think it's the end of the world when someone gets one like someone people do.

There are a lot of things fucked up when it comes to laws etc, for instance, someone could be legally drunk .08 which is nothing, maybe 3 beers and someone completely sober could not be paying attention and run a red light or something hitting the legally drunk person and who know who's at fault for the accident? the person who was drinking.

Obviously your loss has effected your opinion on this so it's no point in my arguing my point with you.

Jared has always been an excellent football player. He was also a first class a-hole until he decided to grow up. Maybe Carl's attitude toward Allen ended up saving his life and the life of some innocent driver had Allen not gone sober. Who knows. I still enjoy watching the guy play and get a kick out of his interviews.

Because he was "high risk" or because of the compensation we would get for him?

If it was latter then fine, still IMO it was a stupid decision to trade him.

I for one didn't think he was high risk, he came to camp in shape, many of those around him said he quit drinkin. etc.

Both.

He was, and STILL IS, high risk. All users are. The way a team shields themselves against that is to put a behavior clause in the contract. Jared Allen publicly stated several times that he would not sign such a contract, at least not with the Chiefs.

In hindsight, it seems we should have kept him because it was only a year between trading him and Carl getting fired. At the time however, it was CLEAR that Jared did not want to play for Carl and with no end to Carl's reign in sight, the only prudent thing to do was to trade him.

I don't think in black and white terms, so I agree that there are varying circumstances in any situation. But there is a reason why driving under the influence is against the law, and I wouldn't trivialize it as minor especially when a guy repeatedly did it. He's lucky he didn't end up like Leonard Little or Donte Stallworth...

I liked Allen and I liked Gonzo. But I've reached a point as a fan that the players mean very little to me anymore. Most of em have become mercenaries like Favre. So I've pretty much stopped putting any emotional investment on individual players as well, they are nothing more than pieces to a puzzle. All I care about now is this team winning a championship. Who is on the team when we do that, I don't care. I have the same attitude about it that Haley does. If you want to work hard to win here and you want to be a Chief, then come on board. If not, then we'll get rid of you if we can get appropriate value. Otherwise, suck it up and do your job, or you will be replaced and gotten rid of when you have no more value.

Pretty cold, but some of these players basically leave me no choice. I like Gonzo as a player, he's a great individual talent, but a guy who basically wants to bail on an organization and gravy train another organization because he wants to win a playoff game, well that has nothing to do with teamwork or building something or working hard. That has everything to do with his selfish desire of setting up his legacy. Jared Allen had everything to do with his own issue with Carl. He could have gotten paid but it wouldn't have mattered because he had a grudge with Carl. Whatever. It wasn't about the fans anymore and it wasn't about working hard to build a winner here. See ya...

I dont think people driving drink makes someone a bad person and a shitty person, it makes them stupid and even if it took him getting busted to turn his life around, it happened. imo, it doesn't matter to much the road you take to get to be a better person, because i believe in better late then never. He just needs to thank god that he didnt hurt himself or anyone else in the process of him being stupid.

Oh yeah, i have a family member thats paraplegic becuase of a drunk driver. While she's not "dead", she hasnt been able to move any part of her body for 20 years now. Its my aunt/godmother. Carl asked for Jared to sign a contract with a behavioral clause and Jared refused. He said SEVERAL times on the radio that he was "cured" and that it was "in his past" and that he would NOT sign a contract with such clauses.

And lo and behold, his Minnesota contract has exactly such a clause in it.

Carl NEVER refused to pay him. Carl offered him a contract with CAVEATS and Jared didn't want it.

Bruce Smith, NFL's all-time sack leader, faces DUI charge
Associated Press
Updated: May 15, 2009, 5:25 PM EST

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Former NFL star Bruce Smith has been charged with drunken driving in Virginia Beach.

Bruce Smith is the NFL's all-time sack leader with 200. (Streeter Lecka / Getty Images)
City police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said the 45-year-old Smith was stopped at 1:42 a.m. Friday on Interstate 264. He said Smith was charged with speeding, driving under the influence and refusal to take an alcohol breath test.

Smith was released on bond a few hours later.

Smith, who played for the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins, is the NFL's all-time sacks leader. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Smith has two previous DUI arrests, but the first charge in 1997 was dismissed and he was acquitted in 2003.
