We weren't ever contacted, at least not collectively. The admin and mod general aliases send a message to everyone on the mod/admin list.

It's more likely that it was a regular member who know TBG's real name. Mods don't necessarily know everyone's full name since it's not required for signup. For example, I only know his first name because of conversations here.
