I bought 2gb of RAM and will be upgrading as soon as it gets here. I am not the most computer savvy person so I need to ask a couple of dumb questions: do I need to do anything to my computer before or after I install the new memory? I currently only have 2 slots and they add up to just over 1gb so I bought 2 1GB's to replace them (most I could get from Dell). Does the RAM hold/store files or is everything basically saved on my hard drive? Sorry for the noob questions but I figured I would check with the locals before I looked anywhere else. Thanks.

Nothing is stored on ram. Just take out the old and put in the new. Doesnt hurt to touch something metal on the case just to make sure you dont shock the hell outta your ram or mobo.

Make sure you ground yourself.

Be sure to be completely naked and put some kind of saran wrap around your face while you do it--just to be safe and make sure you don't fry your computer.

Leave it plugged in, and keep your hands wet...

This. Just do it in your kitchen and you should be fine. Don't do it on carpet.

Make sure you get the right kind of RAM. How old/new is your computer/motherboard?
