Chiefs Chop Brian Johnston
Posted by Mike Florio on May 27, 2009, 4:24 p.m. EDT
The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that defensive end Brian Johnston has been placed on waivers.

He was a seventh-round pick in 2008, and he appeared in nine regular-season games.

If Johnston clears waivers, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. But it makes sense for anyone who wants him to make a waivers claim, since he’s undoubtedly receiving only the minimum base salaries for the balance of his current deal.

Chiefs Waive Brian Johnston
May 27, 2009 - Bob Gretz | No Comments

The purge of the 2008 Chiefs draft class continued on Wednesday as the team released DE Brian Johnston.

He becomes the fourth member of the 12-player class of 2008 to be released since the new regime took over the franchise.

Johnston was a seventh-round pick last year, the 210th player selected. He appeared in nine games last year and was credtied with three tackleson defense and one on special teams. A calf injury pushed him to the injured-reserve list on November 12 and he missed the season’s final seven games.

At 6-4, 269 pounds Johnston was too light to play defensive end in the new Chiefs defensive scheme. He had been working a bit at outside linebacker, although he was not taking part in full team work during last week’s OTA sessions.

Johnston was drafted out of Gardner-Webb. Don’t be surprised if he’s claimed on waivers by the Detroit Lions and former Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham.

Also released were fourth-round choice WR Will Franklin, sixth-round pick PR-KR Kevin Robinson and seventh-round selection TE Michael Merritt.

Almost every poster in this thread is a fucking dipshit.

The team changed schemes. The players that don't fit anymore get released. Its as simple as that, but some of you pubesacks think that this is indicative of the draft being less important than it is.

they haven't changed anything as far as weight but did change position listings on the kcchiefs.com roster. No depth chart available yet.

DE's - Dorsey, Magee, Boone
DT's - Lokey Tyler Edwards TJ Jackson. All played NT in OTA's

Hali and Turk officially listed as LB's.

no big deal really, just noticed it.

Johnston's going to have to make it with his speed if he does. He had good #'s pre draft except really short arms for a DE. He couldn't hold up playing the 5tech and looks out of place standing up.

Turk McBride as a LB=hilarity.

I've said it for a few months now but his body type reminds me of Adalius Thomas. Can't compare them any further than that though. He seems more athletic and compfortable on his feet than some of the conversion guys. Plus he's lean and long armed. I don't see why it's not worth a shot.

Jarret Johnson. I'm sure it sounded stupid to some when he played first was asked to play OLB. But it worked because of the players around him and the coaches. We will see on both accounts even though we still need more upgrades.

Man, where do people get off defending Turk McBust?

The guy is best suited as a 3-tech and now we're expecting ANYTHING out of him at OLB?

I'll be shocked if he's on the roster next year.

There is a difference between defending him ( which i'm not ) and trying him out were he fits in the new scheme. Early on in his career he also excelled on coverage teams/special teams and wasn't out of place on his feet running around.

Then again, he might follow Johnston out the door as he hasn't been practicing because of inj rehab like Johnston wasn't.

booger
05-27-2009, 07:10 PM
If he can fill a role like Jimmy Wilkerson did with us and now in Tampa then he has some value. Like Beisel does with the LB core. He can probably play all 4 spots and play st's. Turk would have to show he can backup at OLB and fill in if needed at DE and possibly DT in passing situations plus fill a role on special teams. That's what i'm guessing what they would like to see from him. Whether or not it plays out that way is a whole nother story. Only time will tell.

But remember last year in training camp Gunther said he was impressive

Well what was Gunther supposed to say? He sucked?

Brian Johston had a very good little career at Gardner Webb, and I think this releasing has nothing to do with his ability. I think that Pioli, and Haley are trying to build a team with players that fit their mold. I guess Johnston is too far behind, or just dosent fit.

Soren Petro thought this kid could be an OLB too, so this was kind of a surprising move, but then again, this is Pioli's show now. I's say Barry Richardson, and Dajuan Morgan are gonna need to really step it up in camp this year. Just a thought.
