Ok, I need some suggestions. I've noticed over the last few months that I have had lots of file download failures. It mostly happens with large files. But has happened on smaller ones too, but the small ones work most of the time. It first happened on my daughters laptop, A few of the windows updates would fail on download. The files were optional so I didn't worry about it.

Then I tried to download the Windows 7 RC on my desktop and it would always fail at the end of the download. Every time. I got a copy of it from a friend and after installing it and getting it running I noticed some applications wouldn't download on it without failing.

Then came my sons computer. It hadn't been updated in a while because he spends most of his time on the Xbox360. So I started updating Windows, iTunes, Flash. Fail. Fail. Fail. I was so frustrated I rebuilt his pc. Same issues.

Contacted Cox as I assumed it had to be their service. After talking to them a while, they suggested hooking up directly to my modem. I just bought this modem a few months ago. Motorola Surfboard 5101. Everything downloaded fine. No more failures.

So I think it has to be the router. I have been using a Netgear WGT624 v3 for years with no issues. I decide to go buy another router. I get a D-Link DIR-825. I get home and set it up and use it for a few days. I was not very happy with the signal. I literally could be in the room with it and not get a strong signal. However I was able to download files without failure. My Netgear always had a strong signal anywhere in the house. So I took it back. I got another Netgear. WNDR3300.

Got it home and set it up. I am having the same issues. Can't download files without them failing. Windows Update files, exe files, zip files. All fail. It is happening whether I am connected wirelessly or wired. It happens on XP PRO, XP Home, Vista, Windows 7RC. I don't understand what could be cause. I have opened an issue with Netgear support but have yet to get any suggestions.

Now I am thinking of taking it back and getting something else. Any good suggestions?? My son plays games alot so it needs to work great for online gaming.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

There could be 50 different possibilities for that type of behavior. And I wouldn't rule out your ISP just yet either.

How are you configuring your router? Is it set for multiple speeds? i.e. 802.11b+g+n? Do you have uPnP turned on? Is you connection secured? Have you done any line tests(both through router and straight from the modem)?

If anyone comes across a good deal on a wireless N router, please post it here. I'm too much of a jew to pay retail. I can wait.

And I wouldn't rule out your ISP just yet either. I use Cox. Believe me I don't rule out them sorry bastards

How are you configuring your router? everything filtered by mac address. I don't broadcast SSID. I had it set to WPA + WPA2. It was suggested to use just WPA2. That made no difference.

Is it set for multiple speeds? i.e. 802.11b+g+n? Yes

Do you have uPnP turned on? Yes

Is you connection secured? Yes

Have you done any line tests(both through router and straight from the modem)?

By this I think you mean downloading through the router and straight from the modem. Downloads work without a hitch connected to the modem. .

Netgear responded and asked me to change my MTU settings. They suggested 1492, 1440, 1400 and 1350 plus turn off SPI Firewall. Didn't work.

I appreciate it. I'm wavering between a dlink, and a linksys. See, I'm a computer retard. I've gotten smarter, but I still don't know shit. I have a linksys wireless g and it was pretty much plug and play right out of the box. Are dlinks good for that as well?

I've used a D-link standard router and it worked well, no expierence with a D-link wireless.

Lower level support couldn't offer any resolution so I have been bumped to the next level. I'll give it a few days and then go get a different brand if they can't identify the problem.

It sounds like a lot of people have had the same issues with this router.

And it doesn't look like there was much resolution at all.

You might try to turn off the n-speed capabilities and see if that makes a difference. Many of the problems appear to be related to wireless speed combinations. The confusing part is the fact that it acts the same through wired connections... that's baffling...

Here's a link for a good deal on one...

Or this...

The one I have looks more like the first one. I may have paid 50 bucks for it, I remember looking for a long time because I, like Floppy, am a cheap fuck.

Well, it's been since Tuesday since I heard from Netgear. They were bumping me to the next level of support. I sent another email to them yesterday since I hadn't heard from them. Still nothing. So I returned the router and got a Linksys WRT610N. Installation was a breeze. Problem resolved. Files downloaded and installed without an issue.

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! My router bricked last night. Fucking thing is only 8 months old. Funny thing is it works as a pass through device. I can connect to the internet wired, but not wirelessly. Can't reset it. Can't connect to it to flash the firmware. On a call with linksys and they are probably going to replace it. Fuck.
