We have Hali and McBride.

But they're not 34. They don't fit fit what we're doing at LB.

True.

But at least they're not fast, instinctive, or playmakers.

Ellis' 11-year Cowboys career officially over after he's released by team
Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys released Greg Ellis on Tuesday, ending the linebacker's tenure in Dallas after 11 seasons and the eighth-most sacks in team history.

Career Statistics
Sacks: 77
Passes Defensed: 35
Interceptions: 4

The announcement was no surprise. One week before, team owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were planning to cut Ellis if he couldn't be traded.

The Cowboys bypassed wide receiver Randy Moss to take Ellis with the eighth overall pick in the 1998 draft. Ellis had 77 sacks and 634 tackles in 162 games and led Dallas in sacks six times.

Ellis was a defensive end for most of that time, then moved to linebacker when former coach Bill Parcells changed to a 3-4 defense. Ellis grumbled at first, then tore his Achilles' tendon. He returned in 2007 and had his best season with 12.5 sacks in 13 games, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

Ok that post amuses me seeing as Ellis has actually played well standing up and we have nothing there.

What are you talking about? The Chiefs have great returning talent from last year that was simply miscoached last year.

He fits the mold.....a 3-4 aging linebacker that hasn't won a superbowl. (except Vrabel.) I'd have no problem picking him up for depth at the LB position. IMO.

I'd sign Ellis for the right kind of contract.
He'd help this football team.

I could give two shits how old he is.
We have a Front 7 where most of our personnel is playing out of position, on a new team, or playing for the first time in the NFL. And we had the WORST pass-rushing numbers by any team since they began keeping track of sacks.

Yeah...
I'll take him.

Ellis is kind of a win and lose at the same time deal. The win part is that he would almost surely lead this team in sacks. Might actually do real well with the chance. There is no Ware on this D to compete with. The lose is that he won't last much longer like the other older guys. You can't really call it a rebuild if you end up with him, Vrabel and Zach as 3/4 of your LB's in a new defense. Then again, what younger guys are going to do much this year to build for the future? I would tend to be reluctant, but still grab him given they have money to give away. He would help for next year. I don't think these guys in charge will make this move though.

We really don't have anyone on the roster that he'd be holding back, so I'm fine with it. It's not like he would be keeping some young stud on the sideline. Throwing guys out there that have no business in the league is how you get a season like last year on the defensive side of the ball. If potential moves like this keep that from happening, that is fine with me.

I think the criteria to sign him is simple: will he come at an affordable price, will he upgrade the position on the field, will he help tutor younger players, and will he be a headache in the locker room? It's the same criteria I hope the Patriots are using if they're thinking about him. Are we talking a couple of million on a one-year deal? That's worth it, since he'll be motivated to behave himself and play his ass off.

Right. There isn't anybody who he would be keeping on the sidelines. I suppose if they throw all those old linebackers out there, it will give the secondary a chance to really come together and indeed see how the line guys progress. Those three could do fairly well with DJ. It also makes sense in that it would help DJ to be around that influence to become the leader in the next two years. I just don't think Ellis will be here.

I guess we'll see what happens. Hard to imagine that Chiefs brass thinks we are where we need to be from a pass-rushing standpoint.

"We have heard from a number of teams already," Williams said, "but the Dolphins have not been one of them."
Would he expect to hear from the Dolphins in the coming days?
"Probably not," Williams said, "given the fact [Jason] Taylor is back and he signed for what he signed for [a max of $1.5 million for one year, including incentives]. It's going to cost a little more than that."
Ellis, who is already guaranteed at least $1.5 million this season, will also be seeking a multiyear deal as he prepares to turn 34 on Aug. 14, so a reunion with Team Parcells does seem unlikely. The Patriots have been mentioned as a possible landing spot, as have the Bengals.

This is from the Sun-Sentinal. It doesn't look like a couple million and a 1 year deal. We all know that what people want and what people get are often 2 different things. But if he's gonna sign cheap for a short contract, I wold think there had to be other incentives (ties to Parcells, chance to earn ring, etc). I don't think the Chiefs fit that bill.
