The Loop probably has the most to choose from, plenty of restaurants, a lot of 'interesting' foot traffic [ie, hippies, drum circles, moonies, hipster douchebags, etc.]. Most restuarants have outdoor [ie, sidewalk] seating. One of the best vintage music stores on earth.

This is just an evening thing, no[t much] daylight?

Figure on a movie as a backup but looking at staying out near the airport too since it is right on the route I am driving anyway.

Avoid Interstate 40/64 coming through town - it's completely shut down between Midtown and Brentwood.

Is there anything out by the airport at all? Other than restaurants.

Casinos.

Seriously, there's nothing to stop for East of the Missouri River.

I live here, and I wouldn't stay anywhere east of the river that far north.

Try to make it to the St Charles/St Peters area, if you can, or do something downtown like City Museum and stay down there.

Not a lot great out by the airport.

For nature, your best bet nearby is Creve Couer Lake.
For shopping and movies, St. Louis Mills.

Casinos are just over the hill at the MO river.

If you range as far as The Loop [about 12-15 miles], you're not too far from Forest Park, with a ton of shit to do as well.

Too expensive. City Museum would be closing a couple hours after we got there so that probably isn't an option. thought about six flags but after Cedar Point and King's Island that would look like trash.

Science Museum or Zoo. The are both on the south side of town across the highway from each other. Not sure of the hours, but both blow away anything in KC.

GF has really lost it's burst in recent years, but great call on Ted Drewes.

A bit out of the way, but not terribly. He could re-route to 44 west, then 270 north to 64/40 west and catch I-70 at Wentzville.

Ted Drewes on a Saturday night is pretty darned cool, at least the one I went to was. Tons of people just hanging out all around it and in the parking lot like it's the 50s.

Yep.

The place has 8-10 ordering windows, and are usually 15-20 deep per window during the summer. STPD usually shuts down a lane of traffic because the line stretches out into the street.

Rod- shoot me a PM with what your hotel budget is, and I'll get some info for you.

Part of Forest Park, also good is the Art Museum, History Museum and of course, golf.

Out 40 past Chesterfield, just past the MO river, then to the West.

A bit of a pain to get to with 40/64 out in the city. He'd have to take 70 around to 270 and down, or 40 to 270 and up [Oh!! The Railroad museum at 270 and Big Bend]. But, he could stay out in Chesterfield, a little tonier than the airport.

Good call on the Transportation Museum.

The Magic House in Kirkwood too. I've heard they've done some serious upgrades and appeals more to teens than the kiddos.

I'd cross the Poplar Street Bridge, head down 44 West - hit Ted Drewes for a treat, then hit either the Magic House or Transportation Museum (both near/in Kirkwood) then stay somewhere in the 270/44 area, or out in Chesterfield Valley.

I was just about to suggest the Magic House. Butterfly House is also supposedly cool (I've never been to either, just know it's on my wife's list of things she suggests for visitors). Botanical Gardens is first rate as well, but it's downtown.

Upon further review, it appears the Magic House went the OTHER direction and is geared more towards elementary aged kids.

Transportation Museum is only open until 5:00pm.

Actually, south city, right off 44 as a matter of fact. About as far from downtown as Forest Park. But it's a lot to take in in just a couple of hours.

Since the wife lived in SoCo, I have a pretty broad definition of "downtown" I guess. I just know it's in a busy area that feels pretty urban (in a good way).

I pretty much limit 'downtown' to where the big buildings are.
In St. Louis' case, InBev to Edward Jones Dome [S to N], River to Grand [E to W].

Bummer about Grant's, did they just let it go to seed or has familiarity just kind of worn off the luster?

I was only there once about 5 years ago, I thought it was pretty slick.

This cracks me up. I've been to St. Louis and KC extensively. I like them both, but I can never understand why people from KC get so worked up about how bad St. Louis sucks. From an outsider's perspective, it comes off as a really, really bad case of sour grapes.
