BRIAN WATERS’ ABSENCE AT CHARITY EVENT HINTS AT MINICAMP BOYCOTT
Posted by Mike Florio on June 4, 2009, 9:47 a.m. EDT

Chiefs guard Brian Waters has made clear his desire to get out of Kansas City, claiming that the new regime is arrogant.

He has displayed his displeasure by skipping out on voluntary workouts.

We’ve been advised — and we’ve confirmed — that Waters also skipped out on a key offseason event for a charity with which he is intimately involved.

First Downs for Down Syndrome is a Kansas City organization that teams with the Chiefs’ offensive line to raise awareness of Down Syndrome and to create positive images of those with Down Syndrome. Waters serves as the group’s co-chairman.

So he serves as the co-chairman, and he didn’t show for a Wednesday night auction.

Several other Chiefs were there, including all of the offensive linemen, and quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Tyler Thigpen.

With a mandatory minicamp opening on Friday, it’s currently looking unlikely that Waters will attend.

But there was no immediate financial penalty for skipping a charity event for which he is the co-chairman. If he doesn’t show for minicamp, he faces a daily fine in the range of $15,000, and possible forfeiture of a portion of his signing bonus.

Wow, now this hints that he's probably just done.

It also suggests that that only reason he did the charity in the first place is because the Chiefs require it.

And blowing off downs syndrome is NOT arrogant? You fucking bitch cunt.

Someone else already mentioned this, but this guy was our alleged "team leader" last season....? I'd say Haley & Co. are right to snuff this turd. He needs an attitude adjustment beyond that of most 13 year olds.

And it honestly says everything for the coddling mentality that has plagued this team for at least the last decade.

In fact....

And/or Whitlock's use of a "source" close to BW. Ha!

Don't give up on BW yet. Waters is still a legit starting LG. And we need all the help we can get on OL. I hope he had a valid reason for missing the event. But if he didn't, then I agreee with the majority that it's most likely time to part ways. [The Chiefs MIGHT get value for him, especially if they hold on to him until some team loses a starting guard to injury, which is bound to happen.]

I don't think they were expecting him anyway. You can search and find a list of things donated. After a quick glance I didn't see Waters donating his time. Colquitt, Thigpen and Niswanger each donated (for auction) events where they would show up - Niswanger will pick up your kid in a limo and take him to school. I didn't see any other OL listed. Since this foundation is generally supported by the entire OL, are people made at Albert for not donating his time like Thigpen/Niswanger?

It's bad enough to be a douchebag. It's even worse to be a stupid douchebag. Even your garden-variety douchebag is probably smart enough not to shoot himself in the foot too often, but this douchebag just made sure a bunch of NFL teams just crossed him off their list because of his attitude. Not too many teams will want "the guy who stiffed the special-needs kids".

Okay, well, maybe SOME teams. He just narrowed the pool to Oakland, Dallas, and Baltimore, maybe.

According to the OP, the entire OL was there, as well as Thigpen and Cassel.

Not to mention that Waters is the co-chair.

If you have beef with the organization, fine. But one should at least pay lip service to charity commitments. Make a comment about how you would like a change of scenery, but would be open to playing with the Chiefs if you could be convinced they are headed in the right direction. Get ripped apart by half the media. Get justified by the other half. That's the way situations like this work.
