Buying a comcast HD DVR?

I pay like 14 per month to "rent" each HD DVR I have, and I have 3. So every month that is $42 bucks plus BS taxes, and $504 a year. I saw on ebay you can buy these cable boxes for about 80 bucks. Has anybody ever done this? Did they work? What types of things do you need to watch out for? I just don't want to buy one, then it not work or be compatible or whatever. Might as well spend the money up front to buy one, save money in the long run.

I'm not sure about Comast, but I work for Cox and we are lease only. We won't activate any box purchased on the 3rd party market.
