So, for the second week in a row, I have gotten a collection letter sent to my house for a bill that I don't owe. The first time, it said my Credit Union was the original creditor, so I went in there and they got it taken care of. This time, it says Wal-Mart's credit service was the original creditor. I don't even shop at Wal-Mart.

They have my first name and address correct, but my last name has been typed as "Colson" on both these letters (my name is Carlson). Is my identity being stolen? And how do I get these to stop?

Pull your credit report and see if there are unauthorized extensions of credit on it.

Not exactly the best time of day to get a flurry of responses. What was the Credit Union one about, was there a loan in your name or something?

Give me your SS # and I'll get them taken care for you. No charge.

I could not find a telephone number for wallmart credit but found this link where you can get in contact with credit customer service.

http://www.walmart.com/cservice/cu_comments_online.gsp?cu_heading=8

While you wait, get a copy of your credit report at a site like:

http://www.equifax.com

http://www.transunion.com/

or

http://www.experian.com/

The free annual credit check will not include your credit score... it merely gives you a list of known creditors and usually includes some contact information.

Check to see if there are lines of credit opened that you don't know about yet. If there are, have any of the three credit companies above place a hold on your credit, contact the creditors and get information from them like when the account was opened and where the card was used, then contact local authorities.

It could also be an honest mistake where someone miskeyed a number and hit your SS# on accident and really then just have them close the credit account and remove any derogatory remarks on your credit.

How do I go about that? One of those sites advertised on TV?

And no, never had a loan in my life. Only have one Credit Card, and it's been paid in full every month.

dude you get a free report a year online, due to law

If you don't know how to pull a credit report you shouldn't worry about your credit

I didn't know that I got a free credit report per year. And I'm not really worried about my credit right now, I'm just trying to build some so I can get loans if needed once I'm out of college. The main thing I'm concerned with is identity theft.

Alright, just did the credit check. Everything on there is clean, just accounts that I have set up. Anyone know of any ways I can get these letters to stop?

The short answer is probably not, I'm guessing there is some deadbeat out there who has a name similar to yours. You might try PMing Mr Flopnuts for better info, I know he has worked in collections in the past.

Contact Walmart with the link I gave you.

I will do that, but I don't know if that will help things, since I have received another letter from a different agency saying the credit came from a different source.
