Just watching the NFL Network's "Greatest Defenses of All Time"
and the 1969 Chiefs were voted #4. I still have vivid memories
from my childhood of this group. Buchannan, Lanier, Bell, Thomas,
Culp, Lynch, Robinson, etc...
Even George Atkinson of the Faders was in agreement that they
deserved this recognition.

That defense could easily be #1. They had it going on.

I love that photo, too. Awesome.

I'm surprised they got that recognition. Usually it's all about Pittsburgh and Dallas and Oakland.

But hey, would you take a defense that has a Hall of Fame DT, MLB, OLB, and CB on it? That's a pretty good D.

Very difficult to do in this age of free agency and salary cap. It would be almost impossible to amass that kind of talent on one team. I mean, Lanier, Bell, and Lynch as your linebackers? Any one of those guys would be standout stars on practically any team. Buchannan, Culp, and Mays on the line? Good God, what a roster.

Top 10 LB corps on now. I'm guessing there will be a showing here as well, with two HOFers.

A couple more of those guys might ultimately make it to the hall, too. Culp, for example. It's not beyond imagination that he might eventually find his way in there.

Chiefs at #4. Bell looked like a man among boys. Huge and fast.

Gosh I wish they could have sealed the deal in '71.

Read my mind. Defense is why I am a Chiefs fan. I hope this ship turns around under the new management.

#1 pass defense in nfl
#1 rush defense in nfl
#1 scoring defense in nfl
#1 yardage allowed in nfl
NFL championship
abused all the top offenses in the playoffs

how again did they slip to #4?

anyone realize that even though Bobby Bell looked huge on tv, he was only 220 pounds?

how times have changed!

Tim Krummrie was a probowl nose tackle for the Bengals at 280 (incedentially, I believe this and his attitude are the reasons he will succeed in coaching our 3 man front for the next few years)

Dan Saleamua was our nose tackle at less than 290 before we switched to a 4-3 under Gun in 92 or 93, Neil Smith was drafted in 88 2nd overall to be a 5-technique at 265 pounds!

my how the game has changed...

Hopefully, Tyson Jackson has half Neils game ability. If so, he can be a big difference maker for us for a long time.

ok, Im getting off track here.....good day!

Yep...If they hadn't lost that #*%^$&# overtime game to the Dolphins, I really believe they would have won another Bowl...And with that, they would have been in 3 of the first six Super Bowls, and won 2 of them.

I think they would have been considered one of the all-time great teams...

True, they did.

But Jan Stenerud missed a couple of FGs in that game.

I fucking hate kickers.

I ****ing hate kickers.

You probably know this, but the first missed FG was actually supposed to be a fake FG. I think it was supposed to be a direct snap to Jan. But Jan sold that it was a real kick too well and Bobby Bell decided that he missed the call. He went ahead with the normal FG, snapping it to a surprised Len Dawson. Had Bell snapped it to the fleet-footed Jan as planned, Miami didn't have any contain on that side of the field at all. It probably would have been a TD.

That's a true story according to Lenny.

Who also said that, had they won that Miami game, the Chiefs would have gone on to become one of the greatest dynasties in sport. He said that game took something out of the team that they were never able to get back. Like their spirit or confidence, or something.

It would be great if we can have a defense that great again one day.

I believe the defense can be great again now that we got rid of the Tampon two defense.

The Chiefs defense won that SB and it will take great denfense to win another SB.

That is why the first three picks of the draft were denfensive.

I'd shared this before but the December 25, 1971 double overtime game against the Dolphins is without a doubt the WORST memory of my childhood (yeah, I lived a pretty sheltered life as a kid.) When the Chiefs lost I screamed, threw things, cursed like a sailor, and basically went nuts for several minutes. After being nearly beaten to death by my mother, I was sent to my room where I was grounded for over a week. I was 11 years old at the time but even now at 49 I remember this like yesterday.
I still have major issues with Jan Stenerud to this day...:cuss:
'
Here's a photo of me at age 12. Notice all the photos of the '69-71 era.
Oh yeah, I'm a native of North East Mississippi. I stood out like a sore thumb
wearing Chiefs t-shirts, jackets to school each day. http://i36.tinypic.com/2a7bn9w.jpg

How'd you end up a Chiefs fan?

Rain Man

So where'd the Chiefs end up in the linebacker rankings?

And I'd never heard the fake field goal story, or at least don't remember it. I have no issues with Stenerud over that game. The guy paid for himself many times over the years, and no one's perfect.

4th in the LB ratings, same as defense.

Top 3 were the 3. 80's Giants, 2. 70's Steelers, 1. 90's Saints.

I'm not convinced the 90's Saints should be ranked that high. Not one HOF'er in the bunch. The other top 4 teams each sent two 'backers to the Hall and each of them had a decent 3rd guy.

2 great guys + 1 very good guy > 4 very good guys
