This summer, Collins is putting on weight at a more alarming pace — Self said he is around 229 now — but Self is reserving judgment with months to go before KU’s annual boot camp workouts.
“He’s heavy right now, 20, 30 pounds overweight,” Self said. “He’s got some time to get some of it down. It’s going to be a very tough patch for him to get where he needs to be.”
Collins said last season that he was playing around 205 pounds. After three years of watching Collins battle his weight at Kansas, Self said he doesn’t see the issue going away for Collins as his career continues.
“He’s going to be a guy that’s always going to have to watch his conditioning, there’s no doubt about that,” Self said.
Last week, Collins decided to skip the USA Basketball World University Games team trials because of a family issue in Chicago.
•KU PITCHER PICKED: Sophomore pitcher T.J. Walz became the first Kansas baseball player to make a national team when he was selected for to the 22-man USA national team (collegiate) for the 2009 summer tour.
Walz, a 6-foot-1 right-hander from Omaha, Neb., led the Jayhawks with an 8-3 record and posted an ERA of 4.70. He also led the team with 88 strikeouts in 82 1/3 inningsThe national team was selected after 10 days of trials that included eight intrasquad games in Cary, N.C. Walz made just one start during the trials, giving up one run and two hits with seven strikeouts in four innings.
•ALABAMA APPEALS: The University of Alabama has taken the first step toward appealing a ruling by the NCAA that forced the Crimson Tide football program to vacate 21 wins. The NCAA placed 16 Alabama teams on probation after 201 athletes were found to have used their scholarships to get free textbooks or other materials they weren’t entitled to.
