I've met Betty Ford and Rosalyn Carter. It was at the reception following Mrs. Truman's public wake at the Truman library. I was working for the caterer and my job was to hand out drinks. Rosalyn was cold, looked right through you and didn't even seem to acknowledge my presence. Betty Ford was warm and real, taking the time to speak to you and give you a look and a smile. Knowing her alcoholic history, I played with her a bit about the drinks I had. When I offered her a screwdriver, she just laughed and said, "Oh no, I can't have that." So, Betty gets my vote for coolest first lady.
